Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting
Twenty children died today when a heavily armed man invaded a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, killing his mother and spraying the school with bullets.
The gunman was killed inside of the school.
Lt. Paul Vance said 18 children died in the school and two more died later in a hospital. Six adults were also slain, bringing the total to 26.
In addition to the casualties at the school, a dead body was also found in the shooter's home, officials said.
Federal sources initially identified the suspect as Ryan Lanza, 24, of New Jersey, but are there appears to be confusion over the gunman's identity.
Sources said the shooter was armed with a Glock semi automatic handgun and a Sig Sauer semi automatic handgun, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Additionally, .223 caliber shell casings--a rifle caliber--were also found at the scene. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he opened fire in the elementary school.
Among the dead in the school was the gunman's mother, who was a kindergarten teacher, sources told ABC News. Many of the students slain were in class with her when she was killed.
First grade teacher Kaitlin Roig, 29, locked her 14 students in a class bathroom and listened to tons of shooting until police came to help.
It was horrific, Roig said. I thought we were going to die.
She said that the terrified kids were saying, I just want Christmas...I don't want to die. I just want to have Christmas.
A tearful President Obama said there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the overwhelming grief that I do.
The president had to pause to compose himself after saying these were beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10. As he continued with his statement, Obama wiped away tears from each eye.
He has ordered flags flown as half staff.
The alert at the school ended when Vance announced, The shooter is deceased inside the building. The public is not in danger.
LIVE UPDATES: Newtown, Conn., School Shooting
The massacre prompted the town of Newtown to lock down all its schools and draw SWAT teams to the school, authorities said today. Authorities initially believed that there were two gunmen and were searching cars around the school, but authorities do not appear to be looking for another gunman.
It's unclear how many people have been shot, but 27 people, mostly children, are dead, multiple federal and state sources tell ABC News. That number could rise, officials said.
CLICK HERE for more photos from the scene.
It is the second worst mass shooting in U.S. history, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 when 32 were killed before the shooter turned the gun on himself. Today's carnage exceeds the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in which 13 died and 24 were injured.
The Newtown shooting comes three days after masked gunman Jacob Roberts opened fire in a busy Oregon mall, killing two before turning the gun on himself.
Today's shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, which includes 450 students in grades K-4. The town is located about 12 miles east of Danbury.
State Police received the first 911 call at 9:41 a.m. and immediately began sending emergency units from the western part of the state. Initial 911 calls stated that multiple students were trapped in a classroom, possibly with a gunman, according to a Connecticut State Police source.
Lt. Paul Vance said that on-duty and off-duty officers swarmed to the school and quickly checked every door, every crack, every crevice in the building looking for the gunman and evacuating children.
A photo from the scene shows a line of distressed children being led out of the school.
Three patients have been taken to Danbury Hospital, which is also on lockdown, according to the hospital's Facebook page.
Out of abundance of caution and not because of any direct threat Danbury Hospital is under lockdown, the statement said. This allows us simply to focus on the important work at hand.
Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district's schools were locked down because of the report of a shooting. The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff, she said.
State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.
All public and private schools in the town were on lockdown.
We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims, Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.
State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.
A message on the school district website says that all afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today and there will be no midday bus runs. (from the net)

The Red Cross’ Secret Disaster”: Charity Prioritized PR over People After Superstorm Sandy
- This week marks the second anniversary of Superstorm Sandy hitting the New York City region, becoming one of the most destructive storms in the nation’s history. A new joint investigation by ProPublica and NPR contends the American Red Cross bungled its response to Superstorm Sandy by caring more about its image and reputation than providing service to those in need. It alleges the organization diverted vehicles and resources to press conferences instead of using them to deliver services. And it estimates the Red Cross wasted an average of 30 percent of the meals it was producing in the early days of its Sandy response effort. We speak to ProPublica reporter Justin Elliott and Richard Rieckenberg, former disaster expert with the Red Cross -- he oversaw aspects of the organization's efforts to provide food, shelter and supplies after the 2012 storms. We also air an official Red Cross response to their investigation.

STORYLINE:
A gunman killed 27 people, including 18 children, at a US school on Friday morning, an official said, in what was one of the worst school shootings in the country's history.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is under way.
State police, in their first hurried briefing, said only students and school staff were killed. Police also said the shooter was dead inside the school, and the scene was secure.
State police Lieutenant Paul Vance told reporters that staff and students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown were among the victims, but gave no further details.
Another law enforcement official said the attacker was a 20-year-old man with ties to the school, and said a gun used in the attacks was a .223-calibre rifle.
The official also said that New Jersey state police were searching a location in connection with the shooting.
After being reunited with his 7-year-old son Richie, Richard Wilford described what his son had seen and heard.
Sounds like a pan falling, or pans falling, he said.
Teacher goes out checks, comes in, locks the door. They huddle into a corner and until the police recover them, that's how he described it and what I know.
Wilford said he was at a loss to describe how he felt when he first heard of the school shooting.
It is a powerless and terrifying experience.
The school superintendent's office said the district had locked down schools in Newtown, about 60 miles (96 kilometres) northeast of New York City.

Sandy: Before And After Photos | NewsBreaker | OraTv
Host @DavidBegnaud delivers breaking news and today's trending buzz in 45 seconds. October 30. 2012 - A European forecast that closely predicted Hurricane Sandy's onslaught days ahead of U.S. and other models is raising complaints in the meteorological community.
The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts on Oct. 23 warned that Hurricane Sandy would hit the East Coast on Monday, days ahead of other major hurricane models, which mostly saw the storm heading out into the Atlantic.
Weather models take data from satellites, weather balloons and other observations and plug them into atmospheric physics equations that computers use to march ahead in time to make storm track forecasts.
Although weather models converged remarkably well by the weekend to predict Hurricane Sandy's arrival with great accuracy, meteorologists complained of weaknesses in U.S. forecasting capability that were exposed by the better performance of the European model.
It's embarrassing, we should have the best forecasts on the planet. And it has an economic cost, says meteorologist Cliff Mass of the University of Washington in Seattle. Hurricane Sandy's losses are now estimated at $10 billion by catastrophe-estimating firm EQECAT, in Oakland, with more than 7 million people without power in mid-Atlantic states in the storm's aftermath.
The European center's prediction was made on more powerful computers, and ran on higher-resolution models of the weather that simulated the future over longer time periods, beyond eight days, than the one employed by the federal National Weather Service. The European model is widely seen as the best at predicting hurricanes, Mass and others say, as demonstrated with Hurricane Isaac in late August.
The U.S. does not lead the world; we are not No. 1 in weather forecasting, I'm very sorry to say that, says AccuWeather's Mike Smith, author of Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather. But the bottom line is that forecasters nailed this storm days ahead of its arrival. The people behind Europe's model should receive a Nobel Prize in physics, this was that powerful a moment in weather science.
In general, there are reasons to believe the European model does perform better, says meteorologist Chris Davis of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. Forecasters typically rely on collections, or ensembles, of model forecasts to make storm warnings, weighing the strengths and weaknesses of each one, Davis added. That makes decisions tricky and reliant on human expertise. This was an unusual storm, with very sensitive conditions, so perhaps in this case a model with (higher-resolution) saw things developing sooner than others.
The U.S. Global Forecast System model run by the U.S. National Weather Service switches to its highest-resolution in forecasts only when looking seven days ahead, unlike the European one, which looks ahead further.
All the models have their strength and weaknesses, said Louis Uccellini, head of the National Weather Service's National Centers for Environmental Prediction. He acknowledged that the European model made its East Coast prediction ahead of the U.S. and United Kingdom's meteorological service. He noted the European model was off in some of its predictions, as well, regarding where it would make landfall and low-pressure measures.
Uccellini pointed to improvements coming to the National Weather Service, which is installing more powerful computers to run fine-grained weather models around August 2013. He does say, however, that extending forecasts beyond the eight-day ones produced by Europe's model is still up for debate at the National Weather Service.~*!*~*!*~*!*~*!*~*!*~*!*~*!*~*!*~*!*~

A Guided Tour of the Big Guns at the Big Sandy Shoot
At the most recent Big Sandy Shoot, big gun expert Robert Bigando gave us a tour of the nearly two dozen big guns on display at the event.
The Big Sandy Shoot is a biannual event that takes place near Wikieup, Arizona, in April and October of each year. The event attracts hundreds of shooters, machine guns and large caliber guns. The most recent shoot was held from October 20 to 22, 2017. It saw the largest turn out of big guns in the event's 30 year history. This included the largest civilian owned gun - the 152mm Russian D20 howitzer.
These guns are owned by big gun enthusiasts such as Bigando. He bought his first 20mm when he was only 20 years old. In fact, he had to wait until he was 21 to be able transfer it to himself. It didn't take long for him to go from the 20mm, to a 25mm, to a 57mm, to a 90mm and so on. Bigando is now a sought after expert in the domain. He had three guns at Big Sandy, and worked on many of the others.
According to Bigando, owning a big gun is very similar to owning a machine gun in terms of both paperwork and cost. A good Bofors gun can probably be picked up for $25,000. he said. So you got to ask yourself, what would you rather have? An M-16, or a 37mm Bofors?
Which gun would you rather have?

Obama Tearfully Mourns Children Killed in Sandy Hook Mass Shooting
Will Friday's tragic shooting at a Connecticut elementary school prompt a new push for stricter federal gun laws?
Many, including White House press secretary Jay Carney, said that a debate over gun-control legislation should wait for another day. But others urged public officials to think of the massacre as a call to act.
President Barack Obama, who has remained relatively silent on the gun debate during his first term, mourned the shooting victims during an emotional statement from the White House on Friday afternoon. But he also hinted that policy changes could be taken up in the future.*
President Obama got tearful addressing the 20 children gunned down in their Connecticut school. Will this be the push to finally enact reasonable gun control? If Obama is motivated, can he push past the GOP and NRA? What arguments do pro-gun lobbyists have, and are they more important than the deaths of 20 children and 6 adults in their school? Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz (Host, Turner Classic Movies), and John Iadarola (Host, TYT University) discuss the matter in detail.

27 DEAD School Shooting Sandy Hook Elementary Newtown Connecticut School Shooting
At least 27 people, including 18 children, were killed on Friday when at least one shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, CBS News reported, citing unnamed officials.
If confirmed, it would be one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. It comes after a series of shooting rampages in the United States this year that have killed multiple victims.
The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said.
The shooter, an adult, was dead and two handguns were recovered from the scene, NBC News reported without citing a source.
There were unconfirmed reports of a second shooter after witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots, CBS reported.
Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade - roughly ages 5 to 10.
It was horrendous, said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. Everyone was in hysterics - parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied.
Television images showed police and ambulances at the scene, and parents rushing toward the school. Parents were seen reuniting with their children and taking them home.
This is going to be bad, a state official told Reuters, requesting anonymity because the scope of the tragedy remained uncertain.
All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.
Lebinski said a mother who was at the school during the shooting told her a masked man entered the principal's office and may have shot the principal. Lebinski, who is friends with the mother who was at the school, said the principal was severely injured.
Lebinski's daughter's teacher immediately locked the door to the classroom and put all the kids in the corner of the room.
Danbury Hospital, about 11 miles (18 km) west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: They are very serious injuries.
A girl interviewed by NBC Connecticut described hearing seven loud booms as she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to a nearby office, she said.
A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did, the unidentified girl said on camera.
One child was carried from Sandy Hook Elementary School by a police officer, and the child appeared to have been wounded, the town's weekly newspaper, the Newtown Bee, said on its website.
Connecticut State Police said its officers were at the scene with local police but provided no additional details. The emergency call to police occurred at 9:41 a.m., state police said.
An individual answering the phone at the Newtown Police Department declined to comment.
Newtown, with a population about 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 45 miles (70 km) southwest of Hartford and 80 miles (130 km) northeast of New York City.
Sandy Hook is one of four elementary schools in the district.
The United States has experienced a number of mass shooting rampages this year, most recently in Oregon, where a gunman opened fire at a shopping mall on Tuesday, killing two people and then himself.
The deadliest attack came in July at a midnight screening of a Batman film in Colorado that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

Historic Photos Of Eugene Oregon
These Images are borrowed from the Lane County Historical Museum. These Photos really inspire me. So I made a little video of some of the photos I collect.
Every little piece of history I uncover. Is put into perspective looking at these. Knowing, the last time that object, coin or relic saw daylight. The town looked like this. These photos range from the 1890's threw to the 1950's. The time frame that all my finds have been in, in Eugene. My oldest, was in Creswell.
