Spotlight on the OBX: Parks & Playgrounds
The best playground on the Outer Banks is the beach and everything water related, surfing, fishing, bodyboarding, visiting the piers, sandcastles, etc, but sometimes we need a break from the beach (I know, hard to believe) - especially the kiddos - but where to turn for a fun cost-effective, and energy-burning, activity?
Ah, I was hoping you would ask.
How about one of the fabulous parks and playgrounds the OBX has to offer?
Let's spin the Spotlight towards the OBX parks & playgrounds this week. I think you'll be surprised at the variety of fun (and locations) there is to offer. Something for everyone; swings, slides, jungle-gyms, tennis, basketball, skateboarding parks - even the four-legged members of the family have a fun spot...well dog's anyway...there are no ferret parks...yet!
Here are the parks we'll shine the Spotlight on:
Currituck Heritage Park has 39 acres of sound front property. The park is within walking distance to the Whalehead Club, Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
Sandy Run in Kitty Hawk includes a 1/4mile interpretive nature walk with elevated boardwalk, canal pedestrian bridge, canoe/kayak docks, picnic shelter, on-site utilities and parking facilities.
Kitty Hawk Skate and Dog Park consists of a skate park, fenced in dog park, playground, and picnic areas with grills.
Hayman Park in Kill Devil Hills is a neighborhood recreation area that includes a picnic area, playground and open field.
Dare County Rec Park is located beside the Kill Devil Hills Water Plant. There are fields for playing baseball, softball and soccer, tennis courts, a playground and a rec center with indoor courts, game rooms, exercise rooms and space for classes.
Aviation Park in Kill Devil Hills includes a path that is ideal for biking, walking and rollerblading, playground equipment and a roller hockey rink.
Barnes Street Park in Nags Head, has plenty of space for all kinds of functions. There is a covered shelter, bathrooms, and a grill for group picnics or cookouts, a playground for children, and open grass space for soccer games or frisbee.
I'll zip it so you can enjoy the tour...

The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.

HURRICANE ARTHUR: Storm Hits NC Coast Just Ahead of July 4th Holiday
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) -- Hurricane Arthur began moving offshore and away from North Carolina's Outer Banks early Friday after hitting the state's barrier islands overnight and causing flooding.
Arthur strengthened to a Category 2 storm with winds of 100 mph Thursday evening before passing over the southern end of the Outer Banks - a 200-mile string of narrow barrier islands with about 57,000 permanent residents. The islands are susceptible to high winds, rough seas and road-clogging sands, prompting an exodus that began Wednesday night.
The storm was moving northeast Friday morning after turning slightly west late Thursday, which increased the threat to mainland communities from flooding, tornadoes and intense winds.
Jesse and Carol Wray could see outside their home in Salvo on North Carolina Highway 12 that the road was submerged under several feet of water Friday morning. The six-foot-tall lamppost at the end of their driveway was under water except for its top, and that was after the sound a quarter-mile away receded several feet since first light, said Jesse Wray, 68, a retired Norfolk, Virginia, firefighter.
I'm surprised that it got this bad. There's all kind of debris floating around here. I know a lot of people who lost their houses around here if they were built on the ground instead of elevated, Jesse Wray said. Wray's home is on pilings nine feet off the ground and avoided water inside.
It looks kind of rough, he said.
About seven miles south on the island, Frank Folb, 70, said his brick home on a rise in Buxton suffered no damage. Tomato plants in his garden were twisted and broken, but overall it's not bad, he said. I've been losing electricity but I slept through the night pretty well.
Up to more than 22,000 were without power across the Carolinas early Friday, according to Duke Energy's website.
We're most concerned about flooding inland and also storm surges in our sounds and our rivers further inland, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory said Thursday.
Before the storm hit, tourism officials had expected 250,000 people to travel to the Outer Banks for the holiday weekend.
After passing over North Carolina early Friday, Hurricane Arthur was expected to weaken as it traveled northward and dump rain along the East Coast. The annual Boston Pops Fourth of July concert and fireworks show were held Thursday night just before of a heavy downpour from Arthur, while fireworks displays in New Jersey and Maine were postponed until later in the weekend.
As of 7 a.m. EDT Friday, Arthur was centered about 65 miles east-northeast of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and 95 miles east-southeast of Norfolk, Virginia. It was moving northeast near 23 mph.
Liz Browning Fox, her 84-year-old mother, her dog and 27 homing pigeons were staying home rather than evacuating their home in Buxton, one of seven villages on low-lying Hatteras Island where officials ordered evacuations ahead of the storm. She, her neighbors and officials worried Arthur could bury the only road off the island in sand or salt water, or slice it with a new channel linking the ocean and sound as happened twice in recent years.
The road getting cut off, the power lines getting cut off, the food getting cut off, that's the big issues. And that's for everyone on the island, said Fox, 60. But she said she stays because she has family all around. And more of them are older than I am rather than younger. Staying is just what we do.
Arthur, the first named storm of the Atlantic season, prompted a hurricane warning from the southern North Carolina coast to the Virginia border. Tropical storm warnings were in effect for coastal areas as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A tropical storm watch was in effect for Nova Scotia in Canada.
Commanders at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, about 150 miles from the coast, sent four KC-135R Stratotankers and more than 50 F-15E Strike Eagles to another base near Dayton, Ohio, to avoid the risk of damage from high winds.

Rare Shark Feeding Frenzy in North Carolina
On Thursday, October 9 at around noon, while at a retreat at Cape Lookout National Seashore off the coast of North Carolina, the leaders of One Harbor Church witnessed a shark feeding frenzy. The men were out fishing for the evening’s dinner when they stumbled across more than 100 sharks attacking a school of blue fish. As seagulls and pelicans joined in on the meal, the men began to cast into the surf, catching fish without the use of bait. For more than five minutes, the sharks were observed swimming in and out of the surf, some of which became beached in the fury. Donnie Griggs, the cameraman who captured the footage, is an avid waterman who spearfishes, dives, swims and surfs at Cape Lookout often. We want it to be clear that Cape Lookout and the surrounding beaches of Eastern North Carolina are extremely safe for swimming. The presence of these sharks and large schools of fish is actually a sign of a very healthy ecosystem.
