Home of service - Ramakrishna Mission, Varanasi, India
---
----
The Ramakrishna Mission is an Indian organisation, founded in 1897 by Vivekananda, a former rationalist, who then became a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, an important Hindu mystic from Bengal. The Mission headquarters are located near Kolkata in eastern India, but associated centres exist across the world.
One of the fundamental principles of the Organization is that selfless service to others is a means for self realization; and that awareness is the primary health determinant for the individual and for the community.
The health care and education programme of the Mission in Varanasi extends beyond the city to serve a population of more than 60,000 persons living in more than 30 villages across the districts of Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and Azamgadh. Its activities include promoting good health, hygiene, sanitation and nutrition education amongst women and children in schools and villages.

Kashi - The Eternal City
Kashi - The Eternal City is a short video clip that explores the ancient city of Kashi, India.
Mark Twain goes about saying it is older than legend. No one can ever decipher the date of this place. When Athens was not even thought of, Kashi was. When Rome did not even exist in people's minds, Kashi was. When Egypt did not exist, Kashi was. That ancient.

The real treasure box: God's presence | A Touch Of Light | Ananda India Online
A visitor once asked Paramhansa Yogananda about the assets of his organization. Master promptly replied “Only God”. He added, “Divine mother once told me, ‘To those whom I give too much, I do not give myself’”. In this video, Nayaswami Devi recollects an incident at Ananda Village in which they lost their home and everything inside to a forest fire, except for a box with sacred things from their altar. It is truly a treasure box for them, as it symbolizes that God’s protective presence is the most valuable thing in life.

Bodh Gaya: Center of the Buddhist World | Documentary
Bodhgaya is the ultimate land of enlightenment. The very place which saw the advent of Buddhism and where Lord Buddha got his enlightenment. Attracting thousands of tourists all across the world, this small town in the Gay district of Bihar is a major pilgrimage for the Buddhists.
The Mahabodhi temple is a UNESCO world heritage site, where the temple complex also has the sacred Bodhi tree (the same tree under which Lord Buddha got his enlightenment) still steadfast and green.
The Pyramidal shaped main temple is an exquisite example of Gupta architecture. There are several other monasteries boasting of its splendid art and architecture. The statues of Buddha in several monasteries date back to an unbelievable 200 or 100 years.
The giant Buddha statue is yet another eye capturing structure to see. Built-in white this 80 feet Buddha statue leaves the tourists awestruck.
The winsome smile of the Buddhists monks, their rhythmic prayers and exchanging, spreads tranquility to the place.
Bodhgaya is a beauty on its own, a place well preserved to witness history and the beginning of a new religion. The small stalls in the area sell souvenirs like laughing Buddha, gongs, bells as mementos. The best part is that being an international tourist destination, Bodhgaya offers you worldwide cuisines to relish. Some good news for the foodies out here!
This description won't satiate your desire to know more about this wonderful land in India. So visit once to see it with your own eyes.

Colours of India – Issue n°19 – October 2017
This October, we commence our journey with a visit to the Mall Road in Shimla, capital of the North Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, that was constructed during the British colonial rule in the country. Today, with its state library, Christ church, restaurants, cafes and the main offices of municipal corporation, fire service, and police headquarters of Shimla, all of which are heritage buildings, the place is a prime tourist attraction in the city.
We then head towards the Bahu Fort in the state of Jammu & Kashmir to soak in the essence of Hindu temples. The fort is a religious place and within its precincts has a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, the presiding deity of the city of Jammu, locally known as ‘Bawe Wali Mata’.
With the start of festive season in the country, we take you to the Dussehrafest in the capital city of Delhi. The major Hindu festival marks victory of good over evil. According to the Hindu mythology, Dussehra marks the day when lord Rama beheaded King Ravana who is described as having ten heads and wished to overpower the almighty. The essence or spirit of the festival lies in its message – to get past all obstacles and emerge victorious and successful.
Moving towards the east, we end our journey with Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata, where the locals passionately celebrate the festival and indulge in seasonal specialties.
