Sanibel Black Death Red Tide
Wherever you are in the United States, please SHARE this post with friends and your local news media. We must get the word out -- beyond Florida.
OK, WHAT AM I LOOKING AT IN THIS VIDEO?
For years, Lake Okeechobee has been an artificial holding tank for all the fresh water and toxins (phosphorus, nitrogen, chemical fertilizer nutrients, raw sewage, and mercury) that drain from the agricultural lands of central Florida. However, the water is no longer allowed to filter south to form the “River of Grass” that once fed the Everglades. Instead, it is kept bottled up by the Herbert Hoover Dike which encircles most of Lake O. When the levels get dangerously high and threaten to breach the levees, the Army Corp of Engineers mandates freshwater releases which are sent east down the St Lucie River and west down the Caloosahatchee.
The following video was taken on Sanibel Island on February 29th, 2016 where the Caloosahatchee dumps directly into the Gulf. It graphically exhibits the direct effect of the “Black Death” of the red tide. Here, the interaction of “fresh” water and toxic chemicals creates a hypoxic (no oxygen) zone, deadly to marine life -- from oyster and crabs, to fish, dolphins, and manatees. So, where is the “Old Florida” of our youth? For Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva, and Pine Island, it appears to be gone. The sparkling clear turquoise waters are but a memory. Now the choking acrid stink of red tide catches in the throats of beach-goers while a graveyard of dead fish lies rotting along the water line. Recreational fishing boats either have no business, or return at sundown with no catch-of-the-day. Hotels and restaurants guests (booked in advance for 2015-16) now cancel plans to return next year. And everywhere tourists and snowbirds staring at the Black Death blurt out the obvious question, “What the hell is wrong with the water?”
If you live out-of-state or outside SW Florida you may ask – why have I never seen evidence of this before? Although Lake O releases have been happening for a very long time, until now they were reserved for wet season – the “off season” -- when it didn’t “show” to the outside world. But now, with the worst El Nino in recorded history and record amounts of unseasonal rainfall, the Army Corp of Engineers has had no choice but to release billions of gallons (DAILY) of the filthy black waters despite it being the height of tourist season. Yes, it is calamity, and more than anything, Floridians hate to expose the loss of traditional beauty that has always drawn tourism to the area. Therefore, the only way to bring pressure to bear on our State officials is to SHOW the world, in no uncertain terms, what is going on.
The Florida Water and Land Conservation Amendment was passed in 2014 (by a 75% majority of Florida voters), providing a solution by buying the “sugarlands” south of Lake O, creating a secondary reservoir (which would stop the discharges into the St Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers), cleansing the waters, and sending them south to provide water for south Florida and the Everglades Restoration. But, for some strange reason, the land deal with Big Sugar fell through, and the nearly half-billion dollars earmarked for this project appear to have gone astray. Is this a case of MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS by high Florida State government officials? And if so, shouldn’t that carry a FELONY CONVICTION? You decide. But don’t take too long. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ~Edmund Burke~
PLEASE, CONTACT YOUR GOVERNOR, SENATORS, AND REPRESENTATIVES. CALL, EMAIL, WRITE LETTERS, ATTEND A PROTEST, AND REFUSE TO TOLERATE THIS OUTRAGE. BUY THE SUGARLANDS! SEND THE WATER SOUTH!

Pine Island (Florida) Fishing
Collecting sea shells at Carpinteria State Beach.
Carpinteria State Beach is an excellent white sand beach right in the city of Carpinteria. The state beach starts at Linden Avenue and continues south to Tar Pits Beach at the south end of the park. In between these end points are several campgrounds with over 200 camping spots. At the day-use facility near Linden Avenue you’ll find all the amenities to enjoy a full day here and downtown Carpinteria is nearby with restaurants and shops. Tide pools can be seen at low tide at the south end of the beach near the San Miguel Campground. A lagoon at Carpinteria Creek in the center of the park is a great place for bird-watching. You can walk into the state park from Linden Avenue. If street parking in that area is difficult to find or if you plan on camping here, the main park entrance is on Palm Avenue which you can find on Carpinteria Avenue south of Linden. North of Linden Ave is Carpinteria City Beach where the wide sandy beach continues in front of beachfront homes. Due to tar seeps in the ocean offshore from the state park, tar balls can be found on the beach. Bring some olive oil or another natural oil to clean the tar off your feet at the end of your beach walk.
Key West History - Jan 18, 1912 - The Filming of Flagler's Railroad Journey
The dream of one man changed the isolation of the Florida Keys for all time. Henry Flagler was a native New Yorker and he was born in 1830. He only went to school up until the eighth grade. But later on, he went on to establish the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller - that was in 1870 and he became very wealthy.
After that, in 1885, he purchased a shoreline railroad between Jacksonville and St. Augustine, and then he began expanding it toward Miami. Miami was at that time only a very small settlement, not the big metropolis that it is. Now, Flagler had a vision and the vision of his railroad went to Miami. But beyond Miami, he wanted to connect the mainland to the deep port of Key West.
At this time, Key West was a booming city it had more than 10,000 residents and it had the highest concentration of wealth of any city in the country. Flagler might have also had in the back of his mind that if he could connect the railroad to Key West, then he could also connect the railroad to Cuba. His railroad extended to Homestead by 1904, and after that he began work on connecting the entire Florida Keys.
By 1908, the railroad had connected Homestead to Marathon,. Marathon became a boomtown - ships brought their cargoes of Cuban pineapples and limes, and they were loaded on the railway cars and shipped North.
The railroad turnaround from Marathon to Homestead was at the Knights Key Campground. It's just recently been demolished and a brand new resort is still being built right there. It took a whole lot of engineering to overcome that seven mile gap between Marathon and Bahia Honda. During the construction of this section of the railroad, construction work was hampered by devastating hurricanes both in 1909 and 1910.
But on January 22, 1912, Henry Flagler, who was now the ripe old age of 82, finally rode his dream from Homestead to Key West. He jumped in the railroad car and went across 42 stretches of sea over 17 miles of concrete, viaducts, and concrete and steel bridges, over 20 miles of filled calls ways ultimately covering 128 miles from island to island, and it was the culmination of his grand vision.
Henry Flagler entered Key West that day a hero. Henry Flagler died the following year, and probably never knew that his big dream his vision, his flight of fancy had changed the course of the Florida Keys forever.
It was today January the 18th, 1912, that John J. Frawley of the Lubin Manufacturing Company was in Key West to film the arrival of the first train on Henry Flagler's Railroad, and also to get some footage of the other industries of the city.
And that's what happened today in Key West history.

The Stones to Seashells - Collecting Seashells Vashon Island
A day of recovery was in order after The Rolling Stones concert in Seattle August 2019. My good friend Gavin Turner was in town from Sydney, Australia and so we decided to go collect shells on Vashon Island for the day. Gavin has a growing shell collection that he wanted to expand on with some North American samples. A super fun day of taking the West Seattle Ferry to Vashon then just driving around the island seeing whats there. We did get kicked out of a private beach for trespassing. There was that. And we ate at the main restaurant in town called The Hardware Store But for the most part it was a really nice day roaming around not really getting too worked up about anything. Thanks in advance for watching!
