These birds from Siberia come to the central Chinese city every October to escape the cold winter. To make sure these birds live comfortably there, the Sanmenxia Yellow River Wetland provides food and a safe living environment. 5,000 white swans have been found in the city as of 2018. The Yellow River Wetland is home to 276 bird species. CGTN's Li Jianhua takes you on a tour of the Yellow River Wetland. For the bird lovers, stay tuned!

CHAIRMAN MAO ERA COMMUNIST CHINA SANMENXIA DAM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT GREAT LEAP FORWARD 62184
Dating to the 1960s, this Chinese propaganda film shows the construction of a series of dams along the Yellow River in Shandong Province. This project was part of the so called Great Leap Forward of the People's Republic of China (PRC), a economic and social campaign by the Communist Party of China (CPC) from 1958 to 1962. The campaign was led by Chairman Mao Zedong and aimed to rapidly transform the country from an agrarian economy into a socialist society through rapid industrialization and collectivization. However, it is widely considered to have caused the Great Chinese Famine.
The film was made in 1961 during the tail end of the Great Leap Forward. The people featured in the film are Chinese citizens of Shandong province and members of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The film starts out explaining the vastness of the Yellow River floodplain in northern China’s Shandong province. There are many smaller rivers that flow into the Yellow River. The Yellow River eventually flows into the Yellow Sea which is on the coast of Shandong. Although, at some places along the Yellow River within China, it is as vast as a sea.
The film then goes on to describe how this will help the farmers of this region. Of course this is in the government’s best interest as farming was collective and owned by the state. Details are brought up on the high expenditures that will be spent on the project and how everyone will benefit from the building of the Sanmenxia Dam.
Next, the Dam is examined in detail. The Sanmenxia Dam is a concrete dam on the Yellow River near Sanmenxia Gorge in Henan province. The dam is multi-purpose and was constructed for flood and ice control along with irrigation, hydroelectric power generation and navigation. The film details how this dam will improve the people’s livelihoods. The production has just been completed.
The final part of the film has a song. This is a kind of workers’ anthem for the good of all people in China, everyone must work and do their part! The heart of the worker is strong, and it is a powerful message in the song. Everyone coming together and China will become number one through hard work and collectivization. In return, the CPC will always look after the People of China for that is why it is called the People’s Republic of China.
The Sanmenxia Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the middle-reaches of the Yellow River near Sanmenxia Gorge on the border between Shanxi province and Henan Province, China. The dam is multi-purpose and was constructed for flood and ice control along with irrigation, hydroelectric power generation and navigation. Construction began in 1957 and was completed in 1960. It is the first major water control project on the Yellow River and was viewed as a major achievement of the new People's Republic of China. Subsequently, its image was printed on the country's bank notes. However, due to sediment accumulation in the reservoir, the dam later had to be re-engineered and renovated. The effects from sediment, which include flooding upstream, have placed the dam at the center of controversy and criticism-related arrests by the Chinese government.

3,500 Swimmers Cross Yellow River
Thousands of swimmers from all over China challenged themselves to swim across the Yellow River on Sunday as one of the eight thematic activities of the 22nd Sanmenxia Yellow River cultural tourism festival.
Around 3,500 swimmers from 93 cities across the country participated in the crossing at the Swan Lake National Urban Wetland Park in central China's Henan province.
Seen as the cradle of Chinese civilization, the Yellow River attracts great numbers of both domestic and foreign tourists. First held in 2010, the crossing challenge has become a great event for swimming lovers, combining culture, tourism and sport.
The Yellow River is the mother river of China. I feel really proud to swim across it, said one young participant.
I thought the water of the Yellow River must be very yellowish before I saw it. Now I realize that it is not (like what I thought), another swimmer said.
The challenge also included swimmers from as far afield as South Korea and Australia.

Skateboarding Sanmenxia Swansong
One last push before the big hurrah.
A ramshackle assortment of skateboarding most mundane, but with gusto, interspersed with a festooning of obscure skateboarding with lacklustre disdain.
Complete with cheesy filters, bad editing and hamster and wasp cameos, we guarantee.... nothing.
Expect the expected.
We will miss our Sanmenxia friends!

Young swan captured apparently drowning itself in distress after the death of its mother
Is this the proof animals do commit suicide? Young swan captured apparently drowning itself in distress after the death of its mother
A Chinese woman captured the moment the swan appeared to drown itself
Yan Yan Hsiao said the young bird was flapping its wings in the water
She said: 'I saw the swan alongside an older bird that was clearly dead'
Added the bird stuck its head in the water and minutes later, it was dead
This is the moment a young swan apparently drowned itself in distress after the death of its mother.
Hiker Yan Yan Hsiao captured the moment the swan appeared to commit suicide.
She said she only noticed the young bird because it was making a commotion and flapping its wings in the water.
Apparently traumatised by the death of another bird, the swan stuck its head in the water, and minutes later, was also dead.
She said: 'I looked over and saw the swan which was clearly a young animal alongside an older bird that was clearly dead.
'She had either died because of the cold or old age but either way the young bird was very distressed.
'After calling and flapping its wings, it then stuck its head in the water and I thought it had calmed down, but then I realised it was keeping its head in the water.
'Minutes later, it was dead.'
She said she had been taking photographs of the swan not realising she was capturing its death at the park lake in Sanmenxia, in Central China's Henan province.
Scientists have debated for years whether instances where an animal deliberately claims its own life because of depression can be classed as suicide
But examples date back to 1855, when the illustrated London News reported a dog had thrown itself into the water to drown and had repeated the action several times until passers-by finally allowed to sink.
There have also been numerous cases of ducks apparently drowning themselves after the death of a mate.
