Japan Travel: Sano Residence ,oldest wooden town house Kitsuki city, Oita28 Moopon
The city of Kitsuki (杵築), in Oita Prefecture is located on the southern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula. The city is nicknamed a sandwich castle town because of the samurai districts on both the north and south hills with the commercial district in the center.
Sano Residence
Since the early Edo Period, members of the Sano family have been medical practitioners for 400years. Constructed in the 1700s, the Sano Residence is believed to be oldest wooden town house in Kitsuki in existence. There are some medical tools used in the past, including a German-made microscope from the Meiji Period.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30)
Closed: December 29 to January 3
Admission: 100 yen

Educational Tour to Japan for School Leadership with CEO AFAQ
AFAQ has taken the unique initiative in organizing an international educational tour for schools of Pakistan.
Japan was chosen for its high standards and achievements of its students. AFAQ took 20 + principals and teachers to Japan to get a glimpse of how fascinating their educational system is.
The delegation then took a tour of the University to get a semblance of how it runs and functions.
The Mayor of Sano City, Mr. Okabe Masahide, welcomed the delegation to Japan and gave a brief introduction.
A full school day visit was made to a private school in Sano. The delegates saw how classrooms functioned and how teachers taught.
AFAQ’s delegation thanked the Japanese administration for a memorable tour and looking after their needs.

Ship of Dreams: Kanrin Maru 咸臨丸 -150 Years of Hope, Struggle, and Friendship
Mary Sano Dance Collaborations presents Ship of Dreams: Kanrin Maru 咸臨丸- 150 Years of Hope, Struggle and Friendship, an evening length dance/theater production with live music, acting, and dance interwoven to tell the historical tale and contemporary significance of the Kanrin Maru voyage, which brought the first Japanese emissaries to the US in 1860.
The underlying theme of this piece is the spirit of perseverance, which carried the brave crew of the Kanrin Maru across the Pacific, and how this spirit has survived and flourished throughout several turbulent generations of US-Japan relations.
This piece features an original script, choreography, and score, with the three main musicians performing live on piano, cello, and Japanese koto.
This production is supported in part by the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco, the Kanrin Maru 150th Anniversary Committee, and the Japan Foundation in LA.
