The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio (official name: Basilica romana minore collegiata abbaziale prepositurale di Sant'Ambrogio) is a church in Milan, northern Italy. One of the most ancient churches in Milan, it was built by St. Ambrose in 379–386, in an area where numerous martyrs of the Roman persecutions had been buried. The first name of the church was in fact Basilica Martyrum.
When St. Ambrose arrived in Milan, the local churches were in conflict with each other over the conflict between Arianism and the Nicene Creed as well as numerous local issues. He was firmly in support of the Nicene side of the conflict, and wanted to make northern Italy into a pro-Rome stronghold. He did this through both preaching and construction. He built three or four churches surrounding the city; Basilica Apostolorum (now San Nazaro in Brolo), Basilica Virginum (now San Simpliciano), and Basilica Martyrum (which was later renamed in his honor). A fourth church, Basilica Salvatoris (now San Dionigi) is attributed to him as well, but may not actually be from the 4th century. These churches were dedicated with anti-Arian language and as symbols of the wealth and power of the pro-Nicene faction in Milan.
In the centuries after its construction, the edifice underwent several restorations and partial reconstructions, assuming the current appearance in the 12th Century, when it was rebuilt in the Romanesque style. Initially, the basilica was outside the city of Milan, but over the following centuries, the city grew up around it. It became a center of religious life and a community of canons developed in the church. In 789, a monastery was established within the basilica grounds. The canons, however, retained their own community and identity instead of fading away.
The church is mostly built in brickwork of different origins and colors, with parts of stone and white plastering. The current Romanesque church was begun around 1080. The nave dates to about 1128 and the rib vaults of the nave are from about 1140.

Fermo, Vetrate chiesa s. Antonio - Stained glass just restored at St. Anthony's Parish (manortiz)

About St. Anthony's
One of the largest and most beautiful Catholic Churches in New England, St. Anthony of Padua Parish was built between 1902-1912. Designed by the Montreal architect Joseph Venne (the architect of the famous St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal) and decorated by two famous Italian artists, Giovanni Castagnoli and Guido Nincheri, the Church would be fitting as the cathedral of any major European City. Among its many features are its renowned 1912 Casavant Frères Organ, its 5,500 decorative lights and its 256-foot steeple. Originally built by French Canadian immigrants to New Bedford, it now serves both English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking Catholics. A full history of the parish is found at saintanthonynewbedford.com. Please note that St. Anthony's is not handicap accessible.

The abbey of Montecassino is a Benedictine monastery located on the top of Montecassino , in Lazio . Since December 2014, the site is under management at the Polo Museale of Lazio . The abbey of Montecassino is the oldest monastery in Italy together with the monastery of Santa Scolastica .
Founded in 529 by San Benedetto da Norcia on the site of an ancient tower and a temple dedicated to Apollo , located at 519 meters above sea level , in the course of its history it has undergone an event of destruction, looting, earthquakes and successive reconstructions. In 577 , during the invasion of the Lombards , the monastery was destroyed for the first time and the community of the monks, with the remains of the founding saint, had to repair it in Rome.
In these forms the ancient monastery had come down to us before 18 February 1944 , during the second phase of the battle of Monte Cassino , a massive bombardment of the allied forces , which erroneously suspected the presence of German departments, the he destroyed again. The bombing began on the morning of February 15th and a good 142 heavy bombers and 114 medium bombers razed the abbey to the ground.
The majestic abbey church, completely destroyed during the Second World War , was later completely rebuilt and consecrated by Pope Paul VI in 1964. Entrance or Southern Cloister : area where the temple dedicated to Apollo stood. San Benedetto re-adapted it to an oratory dedicating it to San Martino.
Cloister of Bramante also known as Sant'Anna : in a central position of Renaissance style built in 1595. At the center is an octagonal cistern, flanked by Corinthian columns that support the trabeation. Cloister of Benefactors or Northern : made in 1513 probably designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger characterized by two theories of statues depicting popes and sovereigns, patrons during the centuries of the sanctuary

Doge's Palace jail, Venice, Veneto, Italy, Europe
The Doge's Palace is a palace built in Venetian Gothic style, and one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice, northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice, opening as a museum in 1923. Today, it is one of the 11 museums run by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. In 2010, it was visited by 1,358,186 people. In 810, Doge Angelo Partecipazio moved the seat of government from the island of Malamocco to the area of the present-day Rialto, when it was decided a palatium duci, a ducal palace, should be built. However, no traces remains of that 9th-century building as the palace was partially destroyed in the 10th century by a fire. The following reconstruction works were undertaken at the behest of Doge Sebastiano Ziani (1172–1178). A great reformer, he would drastically change the entire layout of the St. Mark's Square. The new palace was built out of fortresses, one façade to the Piazzeta, the other overlooking the St. Mark's Basin. Although only few traces remain of that palace, some Byzantine-Venetian architecture characteristics can still be seen at the ground floor, with the wall base in Istrian stone and some herring-bone pattern brick paving. Political changes in the mid-13th century led to the need to re-think the palace's structure due to the considerable increase in the number of the Great Council's members. The new Gothic palace's constructions started around 1340, focusing mostly on the side of the building facing the lagoon. Only in 1424, did Doge Francesco Foscari decide to extend the rebuilding works to the wing overlooking the Piazzetta, serving as law-courts, and with a ground floor arcade on the outside, open first floor loggias running along the façade, and the internal courtyard side of the wing, completed with the construction of the Porta della Carta (1442). In 1483, a violent fire broke out in the side of the palace overlooking the canal, where the Doge's Apartments were. Once again, an important reconstruction became necessary and was commissioned from Antonio Rizzo, who would introduce the new Renaissance language to the building's architecture. An entire new structure was raised alongside the canal, stretching from the ponte della Canonica to the Ponte della Paglia (it), with the official rooms of the government decorated with works commissioned from Vittore Carpaccio, Giorgione, Alvise Vivarini and Giovanni Bellini. Another huge fire in 1547 destroyed some of the rooms on the second floor, but fortunately without undermining the structure as a whole. Refurbishment works were being held at the palace when on 1577 a third fire destroyed the Scrutinio Room and the Great Council Chamber, together with works by Gentile da Fabriano, Pisanello, Alvise Vivarini, Vittore Carpaccio, Giovanni Bellini, Pordenone, and Titian. In the subsequent rebuilding work it was decided to respect the original Gothic style, despite the submission of a neo-classical alternative designs by the influential Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. However, there are some classical features for example, since the 16th century, the palace has been linked to the prison by the Bridge of Sighs. As well as being the ducal residence, the palace housed political institutions of the Republic of Venice until the Napoleonic occupation of the city in 1797, when its role inevitably changed. Venice was subjected first to French rule, then to Austrian, and finally in 1866 it became part of Italy. Over this period, the palace was occupied by various administrative offices as well as housing the Biblioteca Marciana and other important cultural institutions within the city. By the end of the 19th century, the structure was showing clear signs of decay, and the Italian government set aside significant funds for its restoration and all public offices were moved elsewhere, with the exception of the State Office for the protection of historical Monuments, which is still housed at the palace's loggia floor. In 1923, the Italian State, owner of the building, entrusted the management to the Venetian municipality to be run as a museum. Since 1996, the Doge’s Palace has been part of the Venetian museums network, which has been under the management of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia since 2008.

Buona visione dalle Capere!
