IGLESIA SANTA BARBARA MOMPOS BOLÍVAR
lA HISTORA DE LA IGLESIA SANTA BARBARA
Flaming footballs, Mompos, Colombia
Every year in the nine days leading up to Christmas or La Novena, after early mass in the Santa Barbara church, Mompos there is an almost medieval spectacle. That of multiple flaming footballs being kicked around the plaza just one block from the Casa Amarilla hotel. One year the burning fireball landed on our roof, this year, 2011, I was able to record this from the security of m home!

Leyend “Santísimo Cristo de Mompox” is an instrument of God?
The Leyend of The Santísimo Cristo
(From Mompox, Dpto. de Bolívar, Colombia)
“Santísimo Cristo de Mompox” ... ¿is an instrument of God?
Navigating by the Magdalena River in a book came a faith and a hope to this Indigenous Land called Mompox. Carefully concealed in it are all the treasures of wisdom and of knowledge. This made known a sacred secret, namely, that there is actually to us one God, the Father, called Jehovah, and we are the children of his. Also made known that his spirit, called Holy spirit, had become operative upon humans been giving them the power beyond what is normal. This one God, Jehovah, made that, according to the operations performed by his very spirit upon such men, they came to be his instruments.
But ¿What can we say about physical objects? Does God’s spirit work on physical objects as does on all these men mentioned in the same way to perform powerful works?
As Jesus was going, the crowds pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had a flow of blood for 12 years, and she had not been able to get a cure from anyone. She approached from behind and touched the fringe of his outer garment, for she kept saying to herself: “If I only touch his outer garment, I will get well.” and immediately her flow of blood stopped. Jesus turned around and, noticing her, said: “Take courage, daughter! Your faith has made you well.” And from that hour the woman was made well.
From that point onward the people of Mompox has come to know the powerful works that took place in those alien lands. Is possible that Jehovah God perform powerful works in this land?
The Tradition tells that in the seventeenth century three strangers came and sought lodging at one of the Warehouse that was in the Albarrada de los Ángeles, today known as the Albarradita de los Turcos, because most owners of these buildings were from Turkish origin (they really were Syrian-Lebanese, but they were called Turkish because they arrived with Turkish passport, and before Syria belonged to Turkey). Those mysterious men entered the Warehouse, each with a box like a coffin wood, and were not seen again. As the time goes by without news of those gentlemen, the owner of the premises and the neighbors proceeded to pick the lock, it could be that those mysterious men had died.
The surprise was great because inside the Warehouse were found three boxes almost alike, but of these strangers there were no trace. They proceeded to open the boxes and inside of each of them was a Christ carved in wood, which had to be touched it to make sure they were not flesh and bone. Each had a paper indicating its destination: Mompox (Bolivar), San Benito Abad (Sucre) and La Villa de Zaragoza (Antioquia). The one it says Mompox was led it off to the Altar of the Church of St. Augustine and the others were led it off to the Parish of Mompox, where did reach their recipients.
In time, believers began to experience that these Christs have miraculous powers, and if you visit some of them in the Festival of Christ and Easter, the requests are granted. So at Easter or the Feast of Christ the September 14, it is seen in Mompox the pilgrimage of crowds, of fervent believers in this Christ, from all areas of the country.
The history of these Christs says that an incident that marked the history of Christ of St. Augustine, for signs that indicated their destinations get lost and the one corresponding to Mompox, white skin (being land of noble, Marquis and Counts), was led it off to La Villa de Zaragoza (Antioquia), leaving the dark one (by slaves, black workers come from Africa), that went to the mines of Antioquia. The designation only was fulfilled on the Christ of San Benito Abad (Sucre). Later the confusion was cleared, nor Mompox nor La Villa de Zaragoza agreed a change. This fact was used by the faithful of San Benito Abad, to support the belief that the only authentic Christ was theirs and was the true miracle one. Although there is a difference of places, there is something common between the three: they are crucified alive and when you go into any of their altars, San Benito Abad, La Villa de Zaragoza or Mompox, is said that gives the feeling that the miracle one it is looking at us.
Even though there are several testimonies of Miracles performed by this Santísimo Cristo, we should ask ourselves: Can the ability to perform miracles come from a source other than the true God?
Let’s recall what Moses and Aaron did when they appeared before Pharaoh of Egypt to request that Israel be allowed to go into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to Jehovah. As evidence of divine backing, Moses directed Aaron to throw down his rod and it became a big snake. That miracle was done by God’s power. But then the magic-practicing priests of Egypt threw down their rods and these, too, became big snakes. By whose power did they perform their miracle?

Barichara, cobbled streets & colonial architecture, Santander, Colombia
Barichara is a town that is beautiful from literally every angle. Every street, every corner, and every back alley are wonderfully manicured and filled with Spanish colonial architecture, with rolling hills and pristine farmlands as its backdrop. It is carefully preserved and a major restoration of it has created this historical masterpiece. In the center, the sandstone Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción features a gold-leaf altar. Other significant churches include whitewashed Capilla de San Antonio, built in the 19th century, and hilltop Capilla de Santa Barbara
