Vernazza
Vernazza is one of the 5 centuries-old villages that make up the Cinque Terre, on northwest Italy’s rugged Ligurian coast. Colorful houses surround its small marina. The Santa Margherita di Antiochia Church has a bell tower topped by an elegant cupola. Clinging to the rocks, Doria Castle is a medieval defensive structure with a cylindrical tower. The Belforte bastion is just below it.

Vernazza (Ligurian: Vernassa, locally Vernasa; Latin: Vulnetia) is a town and comune located in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, northwestern Italy. It is one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre region. Vernazza is the fourth town heading north, has no car traffic, and remains one of the truest fishing villages on the Italian Riviera. It is the only natural port of Cinque Terre and is famous for its elegant houses.
Vernazza's name is derived from the Latin adjective verna, meaning native. The aptly named indigenous wine, vernaccia (local or ours), helped give birth to the village's moniker.
The first records recognizing Vernazza as a fortified town date to 1080. Referred to as an active maritime base of the Obertenghi, a family of Italian nobility, it was a likely point of departure for naval forces in defence of pirates.
Over the next two centuries, Vernazza was vital in Genova's conquest of Liguria, providing port, fleet, and soldiers. In 1209, approximately 90 of the most powerful families of Vernazza pledged their allegiance to the republic of Genova.

The first documented presence of a church dates to 1251, with the parish of San Pietro cited in 1267. Reference to the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia of Vernazza occurs in 1318. Some scholars are of the opinion, due to the use of materials and mode of construction, that the actual creation of the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia took place earlier, some time in the 12th century. The Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia was expanded upon and renovated over the course of the 16th and 17th centuries, and thereafter was erected the octagonal bell tower that rises from the apse.
In the 15th century, Vernazza focused its defence against the dreadful and regularly occurring pirate raids, erecting a fortifying wall. In the mid-17th century, like many of the Cinque Terre villages, Vernazza suffered a period of decline that negatively affected wine production, and prolonged the construction of the trail system and harbour molo (mole constructed to protect against heavy seas).
In the 19th century, after a long period of stagnation, Vernazza returned to wine production, enlarging and creating new terraced hillsides. The result was a revitalisation of Vernazza's commerce. Also at this time, the construction of the Genoa–La Spezia rail line began, putting an end to Vernazza's long isolation. The population of Vernazza increased by 60% as a result. Meanwhile, the construction of La Spezia's naval base also proved important to Vernazza in providing employment for many members of the community.
With the arrival of the 20th century, Vernazza experienced a wave of emigration as working the land was viewed as dangerous and the cause of disease, and the ability to further exploit agriculture diminished.
In 1997, the Cinque Terre was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1999 the National Park of the Cinque Terre was created. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue.
On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by torrential rains, massive flooding, and mudslides affecting not only Cinque Terre, but also Val di Vara and Val di Magra within Liguria, as well as the province of Lunigiana. The flood left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud and debris (submerging even the train station in mud), causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. The town was evacuated and remained in a state of emergency for many months.

Vernazza, Most Beautiful of the Cinque Terre Villages, Italy June 2018
Vernazza is often regarded as the most beautiful of the five villages, to which I would agree. A small harbor nestles under the shadow of the 11th-century Doria castle and a dramatic seaside church, the Santa Margherita di Antiochia. The piazza is framed by the tall, pastel-hued buildings and beyond the village, steeply-terraced olive-groves dot the hillsides. Vernazza can get extremely busy during the tourist season (May-September). During this time it is best to visit early in the morning or in the evening when most of the day trippers have left.

FOOTPATH MONTEROSSO-VERNAZZA
Difficulty: medium
KM 3,5
2 hour and 10 minutes
The footpath Monterosso Vernazza leaves from the eastern part of the town of Monterosso, in the hamlet of Fegina. Going outside from the railway station go along the seafront to the left, cross the tunnel boarding the sea, pass by the small beach and reach the other part of it nearby a restaurant: here the pedestrian road leading to a hotel begins. In the surroundings of the hotel continue to the right going down through some steps. After a short walk on the plain, a staircase and another flat stretch you reach the checkpoint for the Park tickets, where you have to buy them if you are unsupplied. The price is Euro 3, 00. After that, the path begins with a long staircase crossing vineyards and citrus orchards. The rash walkers being able to finish the climb will enjoy a wonderful panorama over Monterosso.
The footpath continues flat, but in some parts it is very narrow and without protection on the side of sea. When you cross people coming from the opposite side of the road you have to search the right position to let them pass. It is absolutely not dangerous but you have to be a little bit careful, especially with children. Some parts are broad and peaceful, and you can always enjoy a wonderful panorama over the sea. The footpath passes on a small stone-bridge, which is really worth a picture. You can begin to see Vernazza in the distance, and the view of the coast is really unforgettable. To relax a little bit you can find also a wooden table rich in inscriptions with two benches in a very panoramic position. When the trail begins to go down, the view of Vernazza is really breathless. The path continues to go down among olive trees and cultivated fields until you reach the ticket checkpoint, then it enters into the town along the small lanes and ends between the small harbour on the right and the railway station on the left. In the last part you can decide to turn left among the houses and through a steep staircase you arrive nearby the Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia.

Sanctus is the fourth movement (Vernazza) from Missa de Cinque Terre (Mass of the Five Lands). Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. In each of the five beautifully isolated towns, colorful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces and rocky beaches are lined with small fishing boats. The Cinque Terre is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. This place was first described as the five lands in Medieval times, when the towns were watched over by castles fending off attacks by pirates. Centuries later, early traditions still survive and each of the five villages comes with a distinct personality and proud heritage.
Sanctus is based on the fourth village in Cinque Terre (Vernazza), which is crowned with the 15th century Doria Castle overlooking the ocean. A romantic natural harbor lies alongside the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, located in the town's main square, Piazza Marconi. Here, there is no reminder of the outside world. The hypnotic repetition of text, passed from voice to voice, represents the gentle whispers as the waves break on the shore at night, creating a sense of eternal longing.

Cinque Terre & Pisa
Cinque Terre “Five Lands”
Five centuries-old seaside villages built on cliffs of the Italian Rivera that expand over 8 miles and we did it in 3 hours, we concentrated on three of the five and still had time for a light lunch.
Florence to Cinque Terre
We took the FRECCIA from Firenze Campo Di Marte & arrived at La Spezia Centrale by 9am. This is where you’ll buy your all day Cinque Terre train pass, optionally online
Explore by Hiking or walking - amazing trails with views.
•Small train - towns are less than 5 minutes apart. Mostly through tunnels, so not much to see on the ride. Fills up quickly and people can be pushy. But no worry, another one is coming in 30 minutes or so.
•By boat/ferry (runs less frequent, but take at least once). Purchase all day pass at the Ferris kiosk in Monarola.
By advice from a personal tour driver, we concentrated on the best and took the train from La Spezia to Manarola a ferry Vernazza & a the train to Monterosso.
The Five Lands, info
•Riomaggiore is an old village set in a small valley planted with vines and named after the brook (rio) which flows down to the beach in a deep winding gully. In Riomaggiore there is the famous “Path of Love”. It is a steep path which begins above the sea and actually connects the town to Manarola.
•Manarola A picturesque village founded in the 13th century and is named after a small temple built during the Roman age. Here, houses are located by the sea and the city is well-known for its life-size Nativity scene. The sides of the hills are planted with vines producing the sweet wine “Sciacchetrà”.
Take ferry Manarola to Vernazza
•Corniglia is known for its beautiful terraced vineyards and the church that Saint Peter built in 1300. The oldest village built around the XI century. Unlike the other villages, it is not directly adjacent to the sea and instead is set on top of a promontory surrounded by vineyards, terraces and olive groves; connected to the sea by 365 steps.
•Vernazza is a uniquely shaped port which faces a little bay surrounded by cliffs and two ancient watch-towers (Belforte and Torrion) and noted for the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Reggio, and the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia built in 1318 with its foundations in the sea.
Take train Vernazza to Monterosso
•Monterosso al Mare The center is old and interesting with its narrow lanes and colorful houses. It is probably the most contemporary of all and we cannot miss the famous sculpture of the Gigante (the Giant) set on the beach. The area is renowned for its many lemon trees, white wines, grapes, olives and olive oil. (Great place to swim. Spend more time here)
Pisa
We were allowed to jump off at our connection stop and while it seems that everyone else was trying to hold up the Leaning Tower we just came for a ice cream. We were able to get back on any connector train back to Florence without extra cost or confirmation.
