Santa Maria Maggiore Trento – Esterno – Trento – Audioguida – MyWoWo Travel App

Santa Maria Maggiore Trento – Interno – Trento – Audioguida – MyWoWo Travel App

As you can see, the church has a magnificent single-nave interior, flanked by a number of chapels. Just try to imagine this huge nave packed with ecclesiastical figures intent on discussing how to reform the Church, in response to the unprecedented challenge set off by Martin Luther with the advent of Protestantism.
This was the scene inside the walls of the basilica for over a year and a half, from April 1562 to December 1563, during the third and final phase of the Council of Trent.
Traces of this important event can still be seen today in a number of paintings depicting the sessions, featuring the scenes and the characters that played a part in them; these scenes are also immortalized in the frescoes that embellish the vaults above the nave, painted in 1902 by Sigismondo Nardi. These are not the original vaults of the sixteenth-century church, which suffered a collapse at the beginning of the 19th century.
Another distinctive feature of the basilica is the absence of a transept, the rectangle that generally intersects churches between the nave and the altar to give them a cross shape...

Trento is a city in the Trentino–Alto Adige region of northern Italy. It’s known for the Buonconsiglio Castle, home to late-medieval fresco cycles. Trento Cathedral, featuring a rose window and a baroque chapel, sits on Piazza Duomo. Also on the square is Casa Cazuffi-Rella, a Renaissance building with a frescoed facade. Southwest, MUSE is a science and natural history museum with high-tech exhibits.
The capital of Trentino is quietly confident, liberal and easy to like. Bicycles glide along spotless streets fanning out from the atmospheric, intimate Piazza del Duomo, students clink spritzes by Renaissance fountains and a dozen historical eras intermingle seamlessly among stone castles, shady porticoes and the city's signature medieval frescoes. While there's no doubt you're in Italy, Trento does have its share of Austrian influence: apple strudel is ubiquitous and beer halls not uncommon. Set in a wide glacial valley guarded by the crenellated peaks of the Brenta Dolomites, amid a patchwork of vineyards and apple orchards, Trento is a perfect jumping-off point for hiking, skiing or wine tasting. And road cycling is huge: 400km of paved cycling paths fan out from here. Those with an interest in early-modern history will also find Trento fascinating: the Council of Trent convened here in the 16th century, during the tumultuous years of the Counter-Reformation, dishing out far-reaching condemnations to uppity Protestants.

Hi, my name's Rick, and I'm your personal guide. Along with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the Wonders of the World: the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is located in an area that in Roman times was already occupied by a number of public buildings, and probably Roman baths. The space currently occupied by the church has undergone several changes over the years, starting from the beginning of the 5th century, and the construction of this basilica is but the final stage in a period of intense building activity that included an early Christian church, later replaced by a Romanesque building and then by a Gothic-style edifice.
The building we can see today dates to 1524, and was erected in just four years, on the orders of Bernardo Clesio, the then prince-bishop of Trento who embarked on an ambitious project to modernize the city on Renaissance principles. The design of the basilica was entrusted to an architect from Como, Antonio Medaglia, who took his inspiration for the building from the Basilica of Sant'Andrea in Mantua...
