Assisi Mostra Maria A personal experience
A walk through ancient cobblestone streets in the upper part of Assisi brought me to the Church Santa Maria delle Rose . Entering through the old portal
I find myself in a holy spiritual place.
Sacred music lingers in the sanctuary.
Thanks to the artist Guido Dettoni for creating this unique exhibition of Mary…. for having formed Mary with blind eyes out of wax into a statue in different expressions I had never seen before... nor held in my hands …. receiving a deeper meaning of Mary for my life ands thanks to Leba Sleiman for contributing with photos.

The first thing we saw of the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli was the huge golden statue of Mary on the roof. The basilica is located on a large square with several souvenir shops. You do not have the typical souvenirs but mostly religious statues and paintings. The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is perhaps one of the most important religious symbols. Beautiful paintings can be seen on the ceiling of the basilica. The Portiuncula chapel is located in the basilica, which in 1569 built around this church to protect it. It is the birthplace of the Franciscan movement and was the favorite place of Francis. The chapel was from the Benedictines who wanted to give him. Francis refused the gift and hired the chapel in exchange for a basket of fish. Since that time the Portiuncula chapel became a place for franciscans from around the world. From here the preachers went to preach poverty and sacrifice. The Portiuncula chapel has never substantially rebuilt and the walls and the apse are original. The rose garden or Il Roseto. Next to the basilica is the rose garden. There grow roses without thorns. The place would remind the expulsion of the devil, when Francis threw himself into the thorny bushes and the blood turned the thorns into fragrant roses.

Hier groeien rozen zonder doornen. De plek zou herinneren aan het verjagen van de duivel toen Franciscus zich in de doornenstruiken wierp en het bloed de doorns veranderde in geurende rozen.

Poem:
Oh Beloved
you move the earth
with your creation
roses bloom
that touch the heavens
intoxicating their scent
gently drifting toward paradise
wonder and beauty
color and delicacy
tenderness and joy
you shower gracefully upon us
oh assemblage of harmony
sweetest lyric of love
you lift our spirit
wounds disappear
embraced we are
in the majesty of your earthly art
Today I saw into your face of love
Blessed be Thy name
You who leads us into life

Oh, Amato
si sposta la terra
con la vostra creazione
le rose fioriscono
e toccano il cielo
il loro profumo inebria
e lentamente raggiunge il paradiso
meraviglia e bellezza
colore e delicatezza
tenerezza e gioia
ci hai donato
melodiosa armonia
dolcissima lirica d'amore
si solleva il nostro spirito
le ferite scompaiono
siamo abbracciati
nella maestà della tua arte terrena
Oggi ho visto in faccia l'amore
Benedetto sia il tuo nome
tu che ci guida nella vita

Places to see in ( Assisi - Italy ) Cattedrale di San Rufino
Assisi Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale di Assisi or Cattedrale di San Rufino di Assisi), dedicated to San Rufino (Rufinus of Assisi) is a major church in Assisi, Italy. This stately church in Umbrian Romanesque style was the third church built on the same site to contain the remains of bishop Rufinus of Assisi, martyred in the 3rd century. The construction was started in 1140 to the designs by Giovanni da Gubbio, as attested by the wall inscription visible inside the apse. He may be the same Giovanni who designed the rose-window on the façade of Santa Maria Maggiore in 1163.
The cathedral has been important in the history of the Franciscan order. In this church Saint Francis of Assisi (1182), Saint Clare (1193), and many of their original disciples were baptised. It was on hearing Francis preaching in this church in 1209 that Clare became deeply touched by his message and realized her calling. Tommaso da Celano related[1] that once Saint Francis was witnessed praying in this church while, at the same time, he was seen jumping on a chariot of fire in the Porziuncola. In 1228, while he was in Assisi for the canonization of Saint Francis, Pope Gregory IX consecrated the high altar. Pope Innocent IV inaugurated the finished church in 1253. As of 1986 it is a co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino.
The Romanesque façade was built with stones from the Monte Subasio. It is a typical example of the style found in 12th-century churches of Umbria. This façade is divided in three sections. The rather bare top level is triangular with an empty semi-circular arch in the middle, probably intended to contain a frieze or a mosaic. The middle level is divided by two pilasters, in line with the arch in the upper level. Each of the bay thus delineated contains a rose window, the central one the largest and the most ornate. Its frame is supported by three telamones, each standing on an animal. In the four spandrels around the rose window are the four animal symbols of the four evangelists.
The lower level consists of a number of squares and three decorated stone portals with griffins at the base of the side portals. Especially the middle portal is extensively decorated. In the lunette of the semi-circular arch over the central portal is a relief with the Christ enthroned between the sun and the moon and flanked by the Virgin, also enthroned and nursing Jesus, and St. Rufinus. The portal is surrounded with three arches decorated with saints, floral and geometrical motifs and intertwined swans. At the base of the middle arch, on each side, is a lion. These sculptures of lions and griffins have great iconographic importance.
The bottom and the middle part of the square bell tower, on the left side of the façade, were built in the 11th century. It was then situated behind the apse of the previous church built by bishop Ugone in 1029. The top level dates from the 13th century. One can see on the bell tower a colossal one-handed liturgical clock showing the 24 hours of the hora italica (Italian time), a period of time ending with sunset at 24 hours. The foundations of the bell tower rest on a Roman cistern. The structure on the side of the bell tower has been identified as the home of St. Clare.
In 1571 the interior of the cathedral, originally Romanesque in style, was completely modified in late Renaissance style by the architect Gian Galeazzo Alessi from Perugia. It consists of a central nave, two aisles, separated by massive pillars, an apse and a dome. In the interior, at the baptismal font at the beginning of the right aisle, Saint Francis was baptised in 1182 and Saint Clare in 1193, as were many of their original followers, and in 1838 Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The font was fashioned from an ancient granite column and is girdled by an iron grating. The terracotta tabernacle was a present in 1882 on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Saint Francis's birth. On the right aisle is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in Baroque style (begun in 1541 and enlarged in 1663), partly frescoed in 1663 by the local painter Giacomo Giorgetti, a pupil of Giovanni Lanfranco. The nine wall paintings are attributed to the 17th-century painter Andrea Carlone.

Pardon of Assisi | August 2nd | Porziuncola Indulgence and Saint Francis | Assisi, Umbria, Italy 4K
#Assisi #August2nd #pardonofassisi
For over seven centuries the 1 and 2 August, in Santa Maria degli Angeli, it is celebrated the Feast of Pardon, one of the highlights of the year for the entire community of Assisi. Visiting the Porziuncola in these two days, the pilgrims can receive the gift of the plenary indulgence, the forgiveness of all their sins.
Tradition says that one night in 1216, St. Francis, as he was praying in the little church of the Portiuncula, saw above the altar Christ and the Virgin Mary, surrounded by angels. That evening they asked him what he wanted for the souls of faithfuls. Francis asked, then, a broad and generous pardon, with a complete remission of all sins, to all those who, repented and confessed, was entering in the church. The prayer was accorded on condition that the Pope, vicar of God on earth, was informed about it.
At that time Innocent III had just died in Perugia and the conclave, held right in the city of Griffin, had elected Pope Honorius III. Then, Francis and Masseo went to Perugia, and soon obtained by Pope and cardinals, for those who crossed the entrance of the Porziuncola on August 2, the liberation “from the guilt and punishment in heaven and on earth” since of baptism until the day and time of entry into the church. A few days later a Francesco tearfully announced, to the people came at the Porziuncola: “My brothers, I want us all in Heaven!” And the famous moment is still imprinted in the fresco by Tiberio of Assisi in the nearby Chapel of the Roses.
Millions of souls have crossed this “door of eternal life” aspiring to the “Pardon of Assisi” of the Portiuncula and the event is still repeating from the morning of August 1 to midnight of the next day.
Now it awaits the visitors the basilica designed by architect Galeazzo Alessi. It was built in the ‘500 to guard and enclose the Portiuncula, the chapel of Transito where Francis died, the Chapel of the Roses and the roses bush without thorns, and also to accommodate the multitude of pilgrims from the feast of the Pardon of Assisi (August 2) and for the anniversary of the death of St. Francis (October 3 and 4).
The guests came at “gli Angeli”, by foot along with backpacking from the many paths that lead to Assisi or came by any other means, were welcomed (and still be today) by the great fair in the town streets and by other collateral events, which make the Feast of Pardon interesting not only from the strictly religious side.
