Ilocos Norte Loop: Laoag-Sarrat-Solsona-Dingras-San Nicolas
Ilocos Norte Loop covers the following towns & city:
• Laoag City:
One of the richest cities in the country in terms of per capita income and the Human Development Index. Strategically located at the northern tip of the Northwestern Luzon Growth Quadrangle.
Tourism has become a major economic driver of Laoag City, paving the way for new commercial investments and infrastructure development. A recent surge in Chinese and Taiwanese tourists have been flocking to splurge in the city's profitable casino located inside the only 5-star hotel in northern Philippines: Fort Ilocandia Hotel and Resort.
Other places of interest include a tour of heritage sites featuring Spanish colonial buildings, baroque churches, La Paz Sand Dunes, white-sand beach resorts of Pagudpud, and Marcos-era mansions.
• Sarrat:
The town is known as the birthplace of Ferdinand Marcos, the 10th President of the Philippines and for Sarrat Church, the largest church in the province and with the longest nave in the country and an Important Cultural Property of the Philippines.
The Santa Monica Parish Church, commonly known as the Sarrat Church, is the largest church in Ilocos Norte and the most visited place by tourists in Sarrat. The church has one of the longest nave in the country and was declared an Important Cultural Property of the Philippines in September 2009.
• Piddig:
The town is known for its role in the Basi Revolt, led by Pedro Mateo, a native of Piddig. Today, Piddig is known for its basi and for their sariwagwag, a dish made out of gabi leaves with fresh shrimps that are freshly gathered from their rich river.
Piddig's terrain is hilly with rice plains interspersed in between. It sits at a higher elevation than most of the towns in Ilocos Norte. It is a great place for a day hike, if one does not mind traversing through rivers, forests, and fields. The municipio (town hall) is located on top of a hill offering panoramic views of fields and mountains.
• Solsona is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines.
• Dingras:
The following is the List of Cultural Properties of Dingras:
o Versoza House Ruins
o Silvino Madamba House
o Taylan House
o Albano House
o St. Joseph Educational Center of Dingras (Built in the 1940s-1950s; formerly the parish church of Dingras)
o St. Joseph Parish Church of Dingras
o Boy Scouts Monument
o St. Joseph Institute of Dingras Building
o Puruganan Ancestral House (Currently used as Community Rural Bank of Dingras, with NHCP historical marker)
o Josefa Llanes Escoda Monument (House where Josefa Llanes Escoda was born)
o Dingras Cemetery
o Tabacalera de Dingras
• San Nicolas:
Pottery making is the main trademark of San Nicolas. It was introduced by the Spaniards mainly in Brgy. 8, and they called it Alfareria, meaning Art of Pottery. Other traditional crafts include the making of Tagapulot, Lapida, Chicharon and Longganisa. The town also has a large rice field.

16 Minor Basilica in the Philippines [Catholic Churches]
In this video, we featured the Minor Basilicas in Philippines and the beauty of these churches.
The word basilica is derived from a Greek term meaning “royal house.” In the Catholic world, a basilica is a church building that has been accorded special privileges by the pope. There are two kinds of basilicas. The world’s four major, or papal, basilicas are St. John Lateran, St. Peter, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major, all in Rome.
Minor, or lesser, basilicas are significant churches in Rome and elsewhere in the world that meet certain criteria and are given special ecclesiastical privileges. Minor basilicas are traditionally named because of their antiquity, dignity, historical value, architectural and artistic worth, and/or significance as centers of worship. A basilica must “stand out as a center of active and pastoral liturgy,” according to the 1989 Vatican document Domus ecclesiae.
Because designation as a basilica indicates a special bond of communion with the pope, the parish must celebrate “with particular care” the feast of the Chair of Peter on Feb. 22, the solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul on June 29, and the anniversary of the pope’s election or his inauguration into his pastoral ministry.
Thousands of churches worldwide have been honored as basilicas. Fifteen of these can be found in the Philippines and they are as follows:
1. Minor Basilica of Saint Sebastian, Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Quiapo, Manila
2. Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Batangas City, Batangas
3. Minor Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours, Taal, Batangas
4. Minor Basilica of the Santo Niño, Cebu City, Cebu
5. Cathedral and Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Intramuros, Manila
6. Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, Saint Monica Parish Church, Agoo, La Union
7. Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, Naga City, Camarines Sur
8. Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, Saint John the Baptist Parish Church, Quiapo, Manila
9. Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, Tayabas, Quezon
10. Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish Church, Binondo, Manila
11. Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Piat, Piat, Cagayan
12. Cathedral and Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, City of Malolos, Bulacan
13. Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Manaoag, Pangasinan
14. Minor Basilica of Saint John the Baptist, Shrine of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc, Badoc, Ilocos Norte
15. Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, New Manila, Quezon City
16. Minor Basilica and Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Orani, Bataan

PHILIPPINES: COUNT DOWN TO CHRISTMAS: MASS
Tagalog/Eng/Nat
XFA
The countdown to Christmas has begun in the predominantly Catholic Philippines.
Many Filipinos have started attending a series of nine consecutive dawn masses, which they will keep up until Christmas eve.
Unmindful of the early hours, young and old flock the church for the 4am mass, a tradition that has been kept alive for centuries.
This church in suburban Las Pinas is filled with Christmas spirit, as brass bands played Christmas songs to welcome the faithful.
The mood is very festive as Filipinos prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas always means a big celebration in this predominantly Catholic nation, and the countdown to this big event began early on Saturday, with the start of the masses.
The 4am mass will be held daily until Christmas eve.
Despite the early hours, the church is packed with people, young and old.
Food stalls set-up inside the church yard offer local delicacies for these early worshippers.
It is said that this tradition, which has been kept alive for centuries, was started by rural farmers who want to
fulfill their religious duties before a long day's work in the fields. But now, Filipinos from all walks of life, all over the country take part in it.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Actually this is part of the preparation of the people to celebrate the birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ and culturally this has been part of our tradition and it also enable us to come together as family and
as community.
SUPER CAPTION: Father Allen Aganon, Parish Priest, Las Pinas Church
Those who came to participate say it is part of their devotion.
SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog)
This is my preparation for Christmas, when the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus.
SUPER CAPTION: Mrs. Rufina Brolagda
The gathering does not end after the mass.
Many come together to share a meal, to share a bite of a local rice cake, and some sips of hot chocolate.

It is said that in the olden times, when the bell rang, it can be heard from upto 8 kilometers inviting people to attend mass. At the bell tower you will find not one, but 9 bells, not to mention a spectacular view.

- TOWER IS CROWNED BY ONE TURRET AND 8 MINARETS. TOWER DESIGN SIMILAR TO BUDDHIST TEMPLES . According to Mike Pangilinan, the bell tower of Sta. Monica Parish Church has 8 sides like the PADMAPANI (LOTUS SEAT), as well as 8 PILONS similar to those found in the temples of Hindu-Buddhist Temples of Nepal. Pointing to the 8 sacred directions in Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. The crown is definitely a stone pagoda symbolizing the 5 elements that make up the Buddhist universe, sitting on a layered PADMAPANI (8 SIDED LOTUS SEAT). Jose Jimenez said, the Eight sided lotus seat may refer to the eight-fold path of Buddhist religion. Mike Pangilinan said the 8 directions of the compass (4 desha & 4 upadesha)... the up and down remains invisible, except to those who are deeply rooted...
THE LEFT TOWER HAS NO BELLS BECAUSE ACCORDING TO FOLK TALES JUDAS STOLE THE BELL SO PEOPLE WILL NOT HEAR THEM RINGING AND WOULD NOT GO TO MASS, BECAUSE HE HIMSELF LEFT THE EUCHARISTIC TABLE DURING THE LAST SUPPER.
