On our trip to the north of Madeira we drove through the valley of Serra de Agua over the mountain to Sao Vicente. From there we went along the coast to Santana. After a short visit to the Madeira Theme Park, we visited the colorful houses (Casas Tipicas) in the city. Then we drove to the Levada do Risco and hiked there to the waterfall.

The Most Beautiful Cable Car in Madeira - Rocha do Navio, Santana
The Cable Car at Rocha do Navio is located on the north coast of Madeira near Santana. The five-minute trip down to Fajã da Rocha do Navio is breathtaking. The Rocha do Navio Cable Car offers visitors a journey with stunning panoramic views over the sea and the farmlands that exist there
At the bottom you will find vineyards, banana plantations and one of Madeira’s protected Natural Reserves, Rocha do Navio.
This cable car was built in 1997 mainly for local farmers to better access their land plantations. Today the “Teleférico da Rocha do Navio” is open to visitors to explore and experience its beautiful landscape and nature.
Rocha do Navio is also reachable by a trail carved in the rock.
At the bottom of the cable car there is a walk along the pebble/rock beach, watch out for the massive waves.

Santana (abgekürzt für Santa Anna) ist eine Ortschaft und Stadt an der Nordküste der portugiesischen Insel Madeira mit ca. 3400 Einwohnern.
Santana ist berühmt für seine traditionellen strohbedeckten Bauernhäuschen, die Wahrzeichen der Insel Madeira. Früher wohnten die Bauern in diesen einfach eingerichteten, oft rot angestrichenen Häuschen. Heute stehen die meisten leer und werden nur noch als Touristenattraktion in Stand gehalten. Die Strohdächer müssen alle vier bis fünf Jahre ausgewechselt werden.
Santana (Portuguese pronunciation: [sɐ̃ˈtɐnɐ]; from Portuguese Santa Ana, meaning Saint Anne) is a municipality along the northern coast of the archipelago of Madeira.
Santana includes six parishes, within a rugged mountainous environment, most occupying river-valleys.
Santana - the parish (and town) has a population of 3439 (in 2001), in an area of 17.80 km² (a density of 193.2/km²);
Santana parish has the largest number residents, while Arco de São Jorge is both the smallest, physically, and has the least number of residents, while Faial is the largest parish.
Santana is known for the traditional homes constructed with sloping triangular rooftops, and protected with straw. These were mainly rural homes, used by local farmers, during the settlment of the island, with white-paintd walls, red doors and windows with blue trim. Most of the surviving buildings are tourist attractions, and maintained (for example, the straw roofs are replace every four to five years).
Santana has a few schools, one secondary school, a gymnasium, banks, a post office, a small port, beaches and squares or plazas (praças).
