We live and travel full-time in our RV. In 2018 we spent a total of $48 in camping fees. So boondocking (aka: dry camping) is what we do best! In a big rig sometimes that can get challenging but we don't let it stop us. We love to share our boondocking locations with anyone interested.
When the National Forest we were hoping to stay at for a few days was closed due to the government shut down, we scrambled to find our plan B. Our plan B was awesome! Probably better than our Plan A! Santee Coastal Reserve in McClellanville, SC was fantastic! We went on a short hike, explored the little, unique town and saw our first alligator in the wild.
We just sincerely would like to thank each and every person who watches, subscribes and supports us with the amazing, encouraging comments. We do this for you! Big Daddy Fishing Event at Santee State Park
Each year, on the first Saturday in August, Santee State Park hosts the Big Daddy Fishing Event for children. Young anglers (ages 12 and under) and their families out to the park for an all-day tournament to test out their casting and catching skills. Check out the fun during our 2012 event.

The Secrets of Santee National Wildlife Refuge
Santee National Wildlife Refuge in Summerton, South Carolina is a gem of a place waiting to be explored. It has been touted as one of the best inland birding areas in the southeast. Painting buntings, described as rainbows with wings, are a summer resident and frequently nest on the refuge. Refuge Manager Marc Epstein discusses some of Santee's unique wildlife and habitats. [Wikipedia] High Hills of Santee
The High Hills of Santee, sometimes known as the High Hills of the Santee, is a long, narrow hilly region in the western part of Sumter County, South Carolina. It has been called one of the state's most famous areas. The High Hills of Santee region lies north of the Santee River and east of the Wateree River, one of the two rivers that join to form the Santee. It extends north almost to the Kershaw county line and northeasterly to include the former summer resort town of Bradford Springs. Since 1902 the town has been included in Lee County.
The county was named after Thomas Sumter, who came from Virginia, married a local widow in 1767, and with her became a successful plantation owner. He later became noted as a general in the Revolution. After the war, Sumter represented South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives and the Senate.
The High Hills of Santee name has been in use since the 18th century, when the area became a popular resort for wealthy planters. They built summer homes in the region to escape the oppressive heat and malaria of the Lowcountry during the summer sick season. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the High Hills of Santee was the location of many cotton plantations, and had a large population of enslaved Africans as laborers. Among the planter families were The Broughtons, The Dinkins, Richardsons, and the Singletons, whose daughter Angelica married Martin Van Buren and became a First Lady of the United States after his election as president following the second term of President Andrew Jackson.
The South Carolina historian David Duncan Wallace placed the area in what he called the red hill region of the state. He wrote: The High Hills of Santee paralleling the Wateree River on its east attain an almost mountainous appearance. The region contains much good land.
The area includes three National Historic Landmarks, one National Historic District, and several structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has attractive outdoor recreational areas such as Poinsett State Park and Manchester State Forest.
Despite the short distances to Columbia and Sumter, the High Hills of Santee are relatively rural and isolated, as the area was in antebellum times.

In the summer of 2018 we traveled across the south to see family in North Carolina. On our way there we spent two nights RV camping in Kings Mountain State Park. Kings Mountain State Park is located on the northern edge of South Carolina just south of Charlotte North Carolina.
The Area around Kings Mountain State Park is of huge historical importance to the history of the United States as this was where a very important battle took place, The Battle Of Kings Mountain. Kings Mountain State Park provides you with a great place to camp in your RV but be advised that Kings Mountain State Park is a bit on the rough side.
