FULL DOCUMENTARIES |
In this documentary we enter the mysterious world of voodoo. Know their origin, beliefs, gods, rites and best kept secrets, The Mysteries of Voodoo
00:07 Millions of people were captured in Africa and sold in America. By the end of the 18th Century, in Haiti alone, there was a population of more than 2,900,000 African slaves. After becoming a French possession in 1697, Haiti soon became America's biggest producer of sugar and also one of the places with the highest number of slaves in the world.
03:42 Boukman, the leader of the browns, organised a great secret ceremony in BOIS CAIMAN. That night on 14th August 1891, a black pig was sacrificed and all those present drank its blood. The revolution of the slaves had begun. The message was very clear: cut off heads, burn houses and destroy plantations. In a few days more than a thousand whites were killed. The terrified white settlers started the legend that the blacks had made a pact with the devil that night in BOIS CAIMAN.
Voodoo is a religion that is very closely linked with nature and many of its deities dwell in rivers, valleys and mountains. There are many natural settings which are real sanctuaries. The faithful retreat to these places to meditate and meet their luas, or family spirits, and the principle forces of the Universe. These are spiritual observatories that enable them to communicate with the Great Beyond.
09:40 Limonat beach is a place of pilgrimage. Preachers from the most distant parts of the country come here to perform Guiné ceremonies and beseech the favour of Erzuli, mother Earth, the Goddess of Love, who is identified in syncretism with the Virgin Mary. They mainly offer food and rum and wait for Erzuli to appear, for her to take possession of someone's body.
15:20 The lakús are self-sufficient population cells. Work is communal as is the product obtained from this work. Each lakú is run by a HOUNGAN, or voodoo priest, who is called MAMBO,
18:20 A great deal of ceremonies are performed in cemeteries among the dead. The people are not afraid of these places, and it is commonplace, and considered to be a great honour for someone to sleep on his father's grave. The tomb of Baron Sammedi, the King of the Dead, can be found in all cemeteries, although in some it can only be identified by the people from the village, to stop outsiders working there. Normally, it can be recognised by its large cross and the first burial is made here.
19:25 Tonight, we are witnesses to an expedition made by a HOUNGAN from Artibonito, the region of Haiti with the strongest magic. fire is prepared with pine sticks and pieces of paper with someone's name written on them, in order to tie somebody down, so that they cannot leave another person. They also use special powders made by the HOUNGAN. In voodoo these powders are very important. Each HOUNGAN has his own mixtures, which can go from healing powders to zombie powder. This ceremony is performed so that the Baron may deliver justice in a dispute and carry out the sentence on the guilty party. The red and black dolls represent the protagonists, men and women, of the lawsuit that is presented. When this powerful HOUNGAN is possessed, he has the power to eat glass. Baron Sammedi reigns over all the GUEDE, the spirits of the dead. When he mounts someone he acts like a joker and uses obscene language. This is the lua of sexuality and he falls in love with women; his dance imitates the coital act and he always smokes a lot.
39:36 We attended the rite of initiation into Cuban black magic, Palo Monte, by members of the secret society Awuaka. The essential difference between santeria and El Palo, is that here they work with the dead instead of with the saints. Once the initiation is over, the prendas mayombe must be fed. So a goat and two hens are sacrificed. Their blood will satisfy the appetite of the dead, who will help the newly-initiated member to follow the way of Palo Monte.
47:11 Umbanda is based on the worship of the EGUN, beings with great spiritual light, strength and wisdom. Their objective is to attract these beneficial spirits so as to do good. Here, drums and rhythm play a fundamental role. Each spirit has its own beat and its own cadence. Their altars are dedicated to the same deities as in voodoo and santeria: EXU, OGGUN, the warrior, LEMANYA, the siren, OBATALA, the creator, XANGO, and the rest of the African pantheon.

SUMMARY
=======
Pope Pius XII (Italian: Pio XII), born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli (Italian pronunciation: [euˈdʒɛːnjo maˈriːa dʒuˈzɛppe dʒoˈvanni paˈtʃɛlli]; 2 March 1876 – 9 October 1958), was the Pope of the Catholic Church from 2 March 1939 to his death. Before his election to the papacy, he served as secretary of the Department of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, papal nuncio to Germany, and Cardinal Secretary of State, in which capacity he worked to conclude treaties with European and Latin American nations, most notably the Reichskonkordat with Nazi Germany.While the Vatican was officially neutral during World War II, Pius XII maintained links to the German Resistance, used diplomacy to aid the victims of the war and lobby for peace, and spoke out against race-based murders and other atrocities. The Reichskonkordat and his leadership of the Catholic Church during the war remain the subject of controversy—including allegations of public silence and inaction about the fate of the Jews. After the war, he advocated peace and reconciliation, including lenient policies towards former Axis and Axis-satellite nations. He was also a staunch opponent of Communism and of the Italian Communist Party.
During his papacy, the Church issued the Decree against Communism, declaring that Catholics who profess Communist doctrine are to be excommunicated as apostates from the Christian faith. In turn, the Church experienced severe persecution and mass deportations of Catholic clergy in the Eastern Bloc. He explicitly invoked ex cathedra papal infallibility with the dogma of the Assumption of Mary in his Apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus. His magisterium includes almost 1,000 addresses and radio broadcasts. His forty-one encyclicals include Mystici corporis, the Church as the Body of Christ; Mediator Dei on liturgy reform; and Humani generis on the Chur ...

One of Italy's most obscure genre filmmakers has to be Angelo 'Elo' Pannacciò (1923-2001), whose relatively short filmography consists of a few Spaghetti westerns and a handful of adult films. While many are likely to dismiss Pannacciò as a careless hack, and while not entirely untrue, this attitude may deprive one of this obscure & bizarre film that could easily fit into the giallo category. Il Sesso Della Strega (Sex of the Witch) aka The Evil Eye, is an Italian erotic gothic horror film that was originally released in France before being released in Italy. The film stars Susanna Levi, Sergio Ferrero, Jessica Dublin (1918-2012), Franco Garofalo (1946-2019), Gianni Dei, Donald O'Brien, and American actress Camille Keaton.
The film opens with a priest being chauffeured through the Italian countryside whereupon he arrives at the mansion of Sir Thomas Hilton (Simone Santo) to administer last rites as the patriarch lies upon his deathbed. Surrounded by his extended family of nephews and nieces, his consciousness slowly fading, Sir Thomas muses upon his life, and the callow generation that will succeed him. The following morning, his relatives gather for the reading of his will by family lawyer Boskin (Gianni Dei). The Hilton patrimony is to be distributed amongst his descendants, apart from his disinherited daughter Evelyn (Jessica Dublin). A clause in the will states that each of the heirs will have to turn thirty before they can collect their inheritance. Should anyone of them die before this, their share will be divided among the survivors. Unfortunately for everyone else, Evelyn is the only one who knows the mysterious 'secret of the Hiltons', which Sir Thomas had hoped to take with him to the grave. It soon transpires that there is a murderer among the family, someone has taken the initiative to kill off as many as possible so their share of the inheritance is bigger than everyone else's. After the first brutal attack a detective (Donald O'Brien) is called in to investigate. The youngsters of the family seem unpromising as prospective killers. Not one of this litter of neurasthenics and consumptives looks capable of bludgeoning anyone to death without having an asthma attack and having to go home. So what about other suspects? The lawyer Boskin (Gianni Dei) for example, according to the cousins a homosexual, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary. Or the shifty manservant Tony (Franco Garofalo). Most intriguing of all is a mysterious 'aunt' that only Evelyn seems to know. Then another murder takes place, but what makes it worse is that the detective seems to be stirring things up by arresting the wrong person.
Unfortunately, most comments about this film are negative and printed reviews are rare, but in true Italian style, Il Sesso Della Strega (Sex of the Witch) is actually an interesting film that has a 'House of Usher' vibe. Despite the film's subject matters involving incest, drug fueled orgies, twisted sexual perversions, and the bizarre secret of the Hiltons, Il Sesso Della Strega (Sex of the Witch) retains a dreamlike quality that really draws one in with a strange hypnotic see-it-through-to-the-end attraction. The cinematography and production design are quite stunning, especially with the use of yellow and orange colours which certainly enhance the atmosphere, and a great on-set fashion designer who really knew how to make the most exquisite and lurid choices in what certain characters were to wear makes it all stand out.
Italian composer, conductor, bassist and producer Daniele Patucchi has penned a beautifully melancholic score reminding one of the macabre side of the story with its series of dark psychedelic moods bordering between sacred and profane. We also get a pleasant Bruno Nicolai-esque lounge tune with harpsichord along with an ominous sounding piece that sounds the same played forwards as it does backwards. The beautiful and highly talented Italian pop singer, composer and pianist Nora Orlandi performs wordless vocals which only enhances the recording. Yet another gem from the world of Italian film scores.... Incidentally, the art used for the cover appeared a year earlier as a film poster for 'Byleth: Il demone dell'incesto' which has confused some when hunting out this film.

SUMMARY
=======
Pope John Paul I (Latin: Ioannes Paulus I; Italian: Giovanni Paolo I; born Albino Luciani; Italian: [alˈbiːno luˈtʃaːni]; 17 October 1912 – 28 September 1978) served as Pope of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City from 26 August 1978 to his death 33 days later. He was the first pope to have been born in the twentieth century. His reign is among the shortest in papal history, resulting in the most recent year of three popes, the first to occur since 1605. John Paul I remains the most recent Italian-born pope, the last in a succession of such popes that started with Clement VII in 1523.
He was declared a Servant of God by his successor, John Paul II, on 23 November 2003, the first step on the road to sainthood. Pope Francis confirmed his heroic virtue on 8 November 2017 and named him as Venerable.
Before the papal conclave that elected him, he expressed his desire not to be elected, telling those close to him that he would decline the papacy if elected, but, upon the cardinals electing him, he felt an obligation to say yes. He was the first pontiff to have a double name, choosing John Paul in honour of his two immediate predecessors, John XXIII and Paul VI. He explained that he was indebted to John XXIII and to Paul VI for naming him a bishop and then a cardinal respectively. Furthermore, he was the first pope to add the regnal number I, designating himself the First.
His two immediate successors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, later recalled the warm qualities of the late pontiff in several addresses. In Italy, he is remembered with the appellatives of Il Papa del Sorriso (The Smiling Pope) and Il Sorriso di Dio (The smile of God). Time magazine and other publications referred to him as The September Pope. He is also known in Italy as Papa Luciani. In his town of birth, Canale d'Agordo, there is a museum that has been made and named in his honour that is dedicated to his life and his brief papacy.

List of Catholic artists
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written
language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through
audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio
while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using
a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
This list of Catholic artists concerns artists known, at least in part, for their works of religious Roman Catholic art. It may also include artists whose position as a Roman Catholic priest or missionary was vital to their artistic works or development. Because of the title, it is preferred that at least some of their artwork be in or commissioned for Catholic churches, which includes Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with the Pope.
Note that this is not a list of all artists who have ever been members of the Roman Catholic Church. Please do not add entries here without providing support for those artists having specifically Roman Catholic religious art among their works, or having Roman Catholicism as a major aspect in their careers as artists. Further, seeing as many to most Western European artists from the 5th century to the Protestant Reformation did at least some Catholic religious art, this list will supplement by linking to lists of artists of those eras rather than focusing on names of those eras.

The film “Arpilleras” tells the story of ten women affected by dams of Brazil’s five regions, which, through an embroidery technique that emerged in Chile during the military dictatorship, stitched their narratives of pain, struggle and overcoming the violations suffered in their daily lives. The sewing, which had always been seen as a household task, became a powerful tool of resistance, denouncement and female empowerment. Through this common “thread”, each woman embroidered her story, singular and collective, in their respective region of the map of Brazil. At the end of the filming, a multifaceted mosaic of accounts of pain and overcoming. These embroideries, that, according to Violeta Parra are “songs that paint themselves”, bring to the public a reflection of what it means to be a woman affected by dam. If there, in Chile, it is to seek memories spread out like grains of sand in the desert, here it is to search at the bottom of the rivers for their flooded lives, organize themselves, fight and resist.
