Places to see in ( San Vito lo Capo - Italy ) Santuario Di San Vito
The Sanctuary of San Vito overlooks the homonymous square of the historic center, the undisputed symbol of San Vito Lo Capo, is certainly the most interesting monument in the country. Legend has it that around the first chapel dedicated to the holy martyr was, in the following centuries, built the church - fortress to protect it from attacks by Barbary pirates and to safely host all those faithful who came from afar.
The small village of San Vito grew slowly around the fortress and many inhabitants began to accommodate travelers for a fee. After several building interventions, the fortress that surrounded the church assumed its current dimensions: 104 meters of base, 16 of height, walls of the thickness from a maximum of two and a half meters to a minimum of twenty centimeters.
It is very interesting to note how this building is full of very different architectural elements; in fact, elements of civil, military and religious construction merge into a single building of rare harmony. In fact, the loopholes, the rosette of the façade and the balconies coexist, not to mention the watchtower and the votive niches.
Entering the Sanctuary, the beauty of the ancient altar jumps to the eyes, certainly the most important architectural element of the church, here you can admire the splendid marble statue of the Holy Child, dating back to the end of 1500 and attributed to the famous sculptor Gagini. The altar was restored around 1780 with the area's marble. Inside the church there is also a small hypogeal space where there were once two wells destined to worship.
The exterior of the Sanctuary was restored at the beginning of 1998. The Tower, however, is more recent, having been built around 1600, that is immediately after the other watchtowers that are located along the coast, built on a project of the Florentine architect Camilliani, instructed by the viceroy Colonna to plan the island's coastal defenses against the corsairs.

San Vito Lo Capo is a small seaside town in northwestern Sicily, Italy. It’s known for its beach, which is on a sheltered bay overlooked by Mount Monaco. In the town center, the 15th-century Santuario di San Vito is a fortress-like structure with Arab-Norman architecture. Arab-Norman influences can also be seen in the tiny Santa Crescenzia chapel, on the main road out of town, and the circular Torrazzo watchtower.
Unlike most Sicilian destinations, San Vito Lo Capo is all about the sea and the large sandy beach. Although it has one or two attractive historic buildings, the small town is essentially a modern tourist resort. This is a destination for sunbathing, swimming and taking things easy; good for families, for a relaxing holiday in the sun, or for a break from touring Sicily's cultural sights. San Vito's setting is striking; its long beach and level streets are backed by mountainous scenery.
San Vito is easily reached from both Trapani and Palermo. From Trapani there is a public bus service (run by AST) which takes just under an hour and a half. There is also a bus service from Palermo which runs a couple of times a day (more often in summer) and takes between two and a half and three hours. As the town is out at the far end of the headland, San Vito isn't ideal as a base for touring the wider area of western Sicily, though it makes a good place to hole up and relax for a few days. In the more local area, visitors can explore the nature reserve of the Zingaro, visit Scopello and Castellammare del Golfo, perhaps take a trip down to Trapani and visit the Egadi islands.
San Vito's historic buildings include the nineteenth century town hall, Palazzo La Porta. The town's most striking building is the fortress-church of the Santuario di San Vito. Dedicated to the town's patron saint, the complex has a long history spanning centuries of military use before its religious re-purposing. There's a small museum on site. The town also has a marine museum, the Museo del Mare, with exhibits including archaeological finds from local shipwrecks.
The Zingaro nature reserve is a beautiful protected area of coastline which stretches over a large area of the headland, from San Vito to Scopello. There are a number of footpaths in the reserve, including paths down from the main coastal trail to small coves. Visitors to the area shouldn't miss the beautiful views from the little hamlet of Scopello, or the attractive historic port of Castellammare del Golfo. Both can be reached by bus from San Vito.
In addition to its renowned beach, the town offers a other few attractions for the traveller. In the summer, boat trips along the coast offer more opportunities for sightseeing and swimming, cruising along the coast and sometimes out to the Egadi islands. A local Sicilian speciality is couscous, and San Vito boasts its own food festival: Cous Cous Fest. There's also a festival of kite-flying. Activities available locally include diving, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and hiking.

Famous as few, the beach of San Vito Lo Capo, is certainly of a disarming beauty. But, together with it, you will discover many other hidden corners, really unique. Those who arrive in this strip of Sicilian land, for the first time, can not help but be enchanted by the beauty of the gulf that opens suddenly after the small fraction of Castelluzzo ; you will discover, among a thousand shades of blue, a glimpse of the sea enclosed between beautiful rocky walls and a splendid Mediterranean vegetation. A true charm.
Just a few minutes by car and you will be in San Vito Lo Capo ... low houses covered with creepers and in the background a bright blue spot ... you have already fallen in love. Crossing the small village , you suddenly find yourself on the long white beach, a show at any time of the year.
The surrounding landscape fills the soul, with Monte Monaco, majestic and dolomitic to the east, the rocky wall of the Piana dell'Egitarso in the west and at the tip of the gulf, the high and elegant Faro. The transparent waters gently degrade to the open sea and the currents are practically absent, which makes this beach really safe, ideal for those who are not an expert swimmer and for the little ones who can play freely. Offshore, the seabed, are a real paradise for divers.
Enjoy long days on the beach in total relaxation or have fun with water sports (stand up paddle, windsurf ...); along the coast there are toilets and showers, beach umbrellas and sunbeds rental, while for your lunch you will be spoiled for choice among the many dining options that are located on the seafront.

Mondo Sounds a San Vito lo Capo: LA LINE UP
