Day 13 - Skuon, Santuk Silks, Floating Village (Intrepid - The Best Of Vietnam & Cambodia)
FULL DAYS DESCRIPTION BELOW
Our adventure to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, through travel company Intrepid.
November 2015
We left Phnom Penh at 8am this morning to start our 314km trip to Siem Reap.
There was a stop off at the Tarantula Market in Skuon.... err delightful lol. Beetles, crickets, tarantulas etc to eat... not for the faint hearted! This little market also had one of the most memorable toilets on our holiday.. smelly wee squatty potty! lol. But its all part of the adventure :)
A portion of our journey was on a dusty, unfinished road, interesting that it makes up part of a main highway!
At noon we arrived at Santuk Silk Farm where we got to observe the silk worm process from start to finish. If I recall right, this place is owned by a vietnam war veteran called Bud (Bud has since died, sadly, in May 2016).
This is also where we had a lovely lunch and my mums favourite, Rambutan!
By 3:30pm we reached our next stop... a brilliant boat trip down a floating village of Kampong Khleang, on the Tonle Sap Lake. Loved it! It's something I was hoping to see, daily life of people who lived in houses on stilts. Working the water day in day out in fish farms, water crops, shrimp farms and more!.
Fascinating place.
We eventually got to Siem Reap and quickly got ready for our evening meal. Some of the group decided to go to a Cambodian wedding, I know.. random lol. It was actually a really great night, a wedding with someone related to a higher up Intrepid employee, it really was pretty wonderful for him to invite all our group.
On arrival, while being eaten by mozzies.. we waited to have our photo taken with the married couple outside the venue.. how odd is that! We don't even know them lol They were all done up beautiful and us tourists in our touristy clothes... I dont think anyone packed a wedding type outfit just in case lol.
We were given lots to eat and drink at the wedding, it was great. Bram even braved eating a balut (unborn duck foetus), which actually beat Robert who wasnt willing to give it a try! Even though he'd already eaten his way through a bug farm earlier that day haha.
Some of the group had a dance, and it was an interesting and fun night, we're all glad we went.
