Recife Travel Guide - Brazil Exceptional Atmosphere
Recife Travel Guide - Brazil Exceptional Atmosphere
Recife is the capital of Pernambuco, it is one of the largest important cities on the northeastern coast of Brazil. This lively capital, originally founded by Dutch colonizers, is brimming with a vibrant culture, an interesting old town (which includes the oldest synagogue in the Americas) and some nice beaches and LOTS of sharks
Recife stands out as a major tourist attraction of the Northeast, both for its beaches and for its historic sites, dating back to both the Portuguese and the Dutch colonization of the region. The beach of Porto de Galinhas, 60 kilometers (37 mi) south of the city, has been repeatedly awarded the title of best beach in Brazil and has drawn many tourists. The Historic Centre of Olinda, 7 kilometers (4.3 mi) north of the city, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, and both cities' Brazilian Carnival are among the world's most famous.
Recife is on the Atlantic coast, at the mouth of the Capibaribe, Beberibe and Jordão Rivers, close to the eastern most point of the Americas. The climate is tropical, with two main seasons: dry (September-March) and rainy (April-August). Average annual temperature is 78.8°F, with limited variation. Many tourists stay along the beach in Boa Viagem, 10 km (7 mi) south of the center. The area of Boa Vista just across the Ponte Velha from the train station has a number of budget and mid-range hotels.
Celebrations, holidays and other events are numerous throughout the year. The New Year begins at the beach, Praia de Boa Viagem and in Old Recife. The carnival of Recife and Olinda (which has its historic town centre considered a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1982) begins many weeks ahead in December with innumerable balls and parades.
In the city, the carnival festivities begin in December, as locals begin preparing for the official Carnival, which starts the week before Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday in the Christian liturgical calendar. The pre-Carnival parties usually consist of percussion groups practising in local clubs, city streets and squares, and even Carnival balls. There is a variety of rhythms from different cultures. Carnival officially starts with the Galo da Madrugada, a party in Downtown Recife that attracts many people from several states of Brazil, and other parts of the world.
The Mercado de São José (Market of Saint Joseph) is an old, iron construction with a popular market nearby. In the Fort Cinco Pontes (Fort of Five Points) is the state museum, Museu do Estado de Pernambuco. At the rectangular Pátio de São Pedro are the Cathedral São Pedro (Cathedral of Saint Peter) dating from the year 1782 and restored colonial houses, with numerous restaurants, bistros and bars. In the Bairro Santo Antônio (Saint Anthony neighborhood), at the meeting place of the rivers Capibaribe and Beberibe, is the Praça da República (Square of the Republic) with the Teatro Santa Isabel (Theatre of Saint Isabel), with its neoclassical front, the Law Courts, and the Palácio da Justiça (Palace of Justice). The Casa da Cultura (House of Culture) is an old prison that has been converted into a cultural space and shopping centre. Built between 1835 and 1855, the Malakoff Tower, a monument constructed in Tunisian / Arabic style, used to be an observatory and now is a cultural centre and a place for popular gatherings. It is located at Arsenal da Marinha Square.
Recife has a zoo known as the Dois Irmãos Park, consisting of 387 hectares of Atlantic Forest reserve and 14 hectares of botanical gardens. It contains 800 animals, the Natural Science Museum and various ecological trails. The metropolitan area has also a giant water park 20 km (12 mi) North of Recife, called Veneza water park which has nearly one million square feet of area, ten million litres of water and lots of water slides for the youngsters.
Among Recife's main tourist attractions are:
Churches, historical monuments, public markets including 17th and 18th century buildings from Portuguese and Dutch colonizers;
Francisco Brennand's atelier of ceramic art;
Ricardo Brennand Institute: cultural institute with museum, art gallery and library;
Recife Antigo (Old Recife) buildings;
Boa Viagem beach is the urban area's most important beach, and one of the many beaches in the Pernambuco area;
Casa da Cultura
The Carnival at locations such as downtown and Recife Antigo;
Olinda's historic town centre

Touristic City of Igaraçu do Tietê
When we talk about boat rides in the Tietê River, many people recall the boat ride in Barra Bonita's lock, but they forget that this very boat ride takes travelers to the neighboring town of Igaraçu do Tietê.
River tourism is probably the most appealing attraction for tourists, since it is possible to cruise down the river in modern and comfortable boats. Next to the Barra Bonita dam there is a fish farming station designed to breed fishes and repopulate, maintain and balance the species of the river.
The itinerary can also be done by car, through Campos Salles bridge, which is 1 km long. Don't miss the chance of diving into the clear waters of the Tietê River there.
Getting there
Igaraçu do Tietê is 277 km from São Paulo.

Boeing Everett factory tour | Dreamlifter | Dreamliner | Airplane Restoration Museum | First 727
This video shows my visit to the Boeing Factory in Everett (north of Seattle) and the Airplane restoration museum, also at Paine Field in Snohomish County.
As an aviation buff, and also an engineer (and also someone who applied a few times for positions there getting no more than a Thank you post-card), visiting this place was in my wish list for many years. The main reason why I went to Seattle was going to the Boeing Factory. I also had the chance (i.e. went there specifically for that) to visit the Airbus Factory in Toulouse-Blagnac in 2003.
There are organized tours but I'd suggest that you'd rather go on your own, so you can stay as long as you want.
The visit to the Everett factory, where all widebodies are built (i.e. Boeing 747-8, 767, 777 and 787) is a must if you are an aviation buff. The tour takes 90 minutes. During that time a guide will explain many details and show the production lines. I had the chance to see the new 787-9 in the final stages before being delivered to Air New Zealand. It is forbidden to take pictures/video during the tour. there's even an armed guard who encourages everybody not to do so.
After that you can visit the Boeing Store to get some gifts and the Boeing Future of Flight Museum.
Take advantage to visit also the Airplane Restoration Museum about 10 minutes away and also in Paine Field. I didn't know anything about it but the guide took me there. In that museum some volunteers devote their time to restore old airplanes. There was a de Havillland Comet 4C that belonged to Mexicana. You can go inside the plane, walk around and even sit in the seats.
Outside they have the first Boeing 727-100 ever made, that rolled out of the factory in 1962 and was delivered to United in 1964.
The Boeing factory building is the world's largest by volume.
I couldn't make it there, but heard excellent comments about the Boeing Museum of Flight at the Boeing Fiela (aka King County Airport), close to Sea-Tac airport. I will leave it for the next visit.
Boeing has another factory in Renton, where they build the 737s. In the past also the 757, 707 and 727 were produced there.
Now I need to visit Embraer factory in Sao Jose dos Campos, 1 hour away from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

City Description:
Fortaleza is the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará. It's known for its beaches, which are punctuated by red cliffs, palm trees, dunes and lagoons. Fortaleza’s long-standing folkloric traditions are presented in dance performances at the art nouveau José de Alencar theater, open since 1910. Another architectural highlight is the neo-Gothic Catedral Metropolitana.The popular beach neighborhood of Praia de Iracema hosts lively nightclubs, restaurants and the EMCETUR Tourism Center, a former 19th-century jail with craft shops in the cells, downstairs from the Museu de Arte e Cultura Popular. The Meireles neighborhood is known for its beach boulevard and nightly handicrafts market. The Dragão do Mar art and culture center features movie theaters and museums in a contemporary setting that contrasts with the 19th-century colonial buildings it neighbors. Inland, visitors can hike amid mangrove swamps at the sprawling Cocó Ecological Park on the Rio Cocó river.
Weather and Events:
Peak periods include summer (Dec–Feb), which is hot and dry, and Jun–Aug. Carnaval (Feb, dates vary) and the pre-Carnaval street parties in the weekends leading up to it is a busy period. Other key events are the São João/Festa Junina celebrations (Jun), featuring folk dancing; Fortal (Jul), an off-season Carnaval with concerts; and Ceará Music (Oct/Nov), an international rock and pop festival. The climate is tropical and warm year-round, with a rainy season Apr–Jul.
