Villa Sao Tiago, Funchal-Madeira, drone tour

This is a charming 4-story traditional Madeiran villa built for a wealthy Madeiran doctor in 1937.

The villa has been carefully restored to create a beautiful paradise right in the heart of this lovely old district.

The work was completed in 2009 and comprises of five luxury apartments. The distribution of the villa is; 2 two bedroom apartments and 3 one bedroom apartments.

Construído no início do século XVII como fortaleza de defesa do porto do Funchal, o Forte de São Tiago é um forte urbano de arquitetura militar.

Este forte de arquitetura militar está localizado acima da orla marítima da zona histórica da cidade, mais conhecida por “Zona Velha”.

The construction of the São Tiago Fortress began in 1614 and its purpose was to defend the city of Funchal from attacks by pirates and privateers. Royal master builder Jerónimo Jorge was in charge of the works and years later, the construction was completed by his son, Bartolomeu João. Under the responsibility of engineer Tossi Columbina (who designed the Port of Funchal), the first phase of the construction was completed in the mid-17th century and the second phase in the mid-18th century. Over the years, the fortress has been used for various purposes, including serving as quartering of the British troops, the military police and the Funchal Lancers Squad at different times. It also sheltered victims of the massive floods that occurred on the island in 1803.)

Funchal is the capital city of Portugal's Madeira archipelago. It's backed by hills, and known for its harbor, gardens and Madeira wine cellars. The centuries-old Sé Cathedral, which mixes Gothic and Romanesque styles, is notable for its carved wooden ceiling. Fronting the harbor is the São Tiago Fortress, built in the 1600s. It now houses the Contemporary Art Museum, with a large collection of Portuguese works.
