CROSSING THE VIETNAM - LAOS BORDER (Sa Pa - Muang Khua) & INFO TO KNOW | Travel Vlog #6
If you found our content valuable Please Subscribe / Tip with Brave. Cheers! Thank you!
........................................................................................................................................................................
Crossing a border is never a fun experience, true. But it doesn't have to be a painful one either. As at many border crossings, just being relaxed and prepared makes them much less stressful.
Crossing the border in the North of Vietnam to Laos at the Tay Trang border was pretty relaxed overall. Out of our bus, the only guy that had an issue was the one that wasn't prepared with clean crisp USD to pay the visa fee. He got it sorted but it took an extra 20min of him asking everyone in sight for USD to exchange.
Be prepared. It was quite a long tiring journey from Sa Pa, Vietnam to Muang Khoa, Laos, of about 17 hours but at least we were in a sleeper bus on the first 8 hour bus and the daytime had beautiful views all the way which grabbed your attention.
Important Information:
- Departure point: Flaco Hostel, Sa Pa (Recommended)
- The bus price we paid vs price we could have paid (460k vs 300k) VND / Person from Sa Pa to Muang Khoa
- Buy from departure point vs from website (saves money)
Laos Immigration:
- 30 - 42 USD depending on citizenship. 35 USD for US citizens
- (Didn't ask us for passport photo but could. It is always a good idea have extra when traveling)
- 30k kip stamping fee
- On weekends there is also a small fee for medical check
- Only accepts US dollars that are in GREAT CONDITION (be prepared)
Vietnam: How to travel around? From Ho Chi Minh City to Sapa...
Here you can see the cities where we stopped (south to north) and the distance between each city.
1. Hồ Chí Minh (4-5 hours to Mũi Né)
2. Cần Thơ (Mekon Delta)
3. Mũi Né (4-5 hours to Đà Lạt)
4. Đà Lạt (3-4 hours to Nha Trang + 11 – 12 hours to Hội An)
5. Nha Trang: you shouldn’t stop here – touristy, expensive and nothing special.
6. Hội An (30 min to Danang + 3 hours to Huế)
7. Huế (4-5 hours to Phong Nha-Ke Bang)
8. Phong Nha-Ke Bang (7,5 hours to Tam Cốc)
9. Tam Cốc (3,5 hours to Hải Phòng + 2 hours to Cat Ba town)
10. Cat Ba (4-5 hours to Ha Noi)
11. Ha Noi (5 hours to Sa Pa by bus/8 hours by train)
12. Sa Pa
Transport all around Vietnam
Open bus ticket
We bought our open bus ticket in Ho Chi Minh City at TheSinhTourist office. We were really satisfied with this company. Drivers were nice and reliable most of the times . You can choose how many stops you want to do. You need to reconfirm each bus ride by calling or visiting the counter. Of course it is also possible to book single bus tickets but this way you pay more. Unfortunately the open bus ticket doesn’t include all stops. You won’t be able to reach places like Phong Nha-Ke Bang, Tam Cốc or Cat Ba. So we booked the open bus ticket from Hồ Chí Minh to Huế. All the other stops we made (8. to 12.) we reached by single bus rides or train. We paid 684.000 VND for the open bus ticket (26,50 €/$ 30).
By motorbike
We met many travellers who either bought a motorbike in Ha Noi or in Ho Chi Minh. It is for sure very beautiful and a unique experience but we considered it as too dangerous. One amazing part of Vietnam is impossible to visit if you don’t have a motorbike: the route between Hội An and Huế (called the Hải Vân Pass). An other option is to travel with Easy Riders: you have your own motorbike rider. There is even enough space to transport your backpack and they organize launch as accommodation.
By train
Travel around by train is very nice. But take care – never buy tickets online. Just go to the train station and buy the ticket at the counter. The website seat61.com gives some helpful advice how to buy train tickets and how to read a Vietnamese train ticket.
In Vietnam there are many people who try to sell you tickets for a much higher price.

Ham Rong mountain, located 3km from the center of Sapa town, behind the Sapa Stone Church is a mountain of the majestic Hoang Lien Son range. Ham Rong or jaws of the dragon comes from the dragon jaw-like shape of the mountain peek, associated with a thrilling legend of two dragons. These dragons loved each other very much, but then they were washed away by a deluge, separating them to different places. The female dragon missed the male one very much so until petrified, it still faced toward the male dragon in the west of the Hoang Lien Son range.

Sapa, Vietnam! Ep.34 // BCD
Sapa, Vietnam, from Hanoi via Lao Cai. Most of this video isn't in Sapa, but a small village called Ta Van located just outside the Hoàng Liên National Park.
On New (Lunar) Years Day, we got an early 8 hour train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, and then hired a semi-auto moped for an hour drive to SaPa, before finally arriving, after another 30 min drive in the dark, at the Sapa Volunteer Homestay in Ta Van. We slept, then woke up for a day of hiking in the amazing mountainous and rice paddy filled landscape of the north, before driving back to Lao Cai and getting a train back to Hanoi!
Here's part five of our adventure in Vietnam! // Please give thumbs up if you liked the video and share :)
So! Grab a hot drink, sit back and enjoy!
Title coffee at a very scenic roadside place called Tam Tam Cafe. Coffee wasn't great, but the view was stunning!
We stayed at the Sapa Volunteer Homestay - - it was pretty cool; there are lots of Homestays there though, and 'Homestay' seems to be another word for 'Hostel' there, these days. Perhaps not as rugged as it once was.

Sa Pa Vietnam Part 1
VietnamSa Pa is a frontier town and capital of Sa Pa District in Lào Cai Province in northwest Vietnam. It was first inhabited by people we know nothing about. They left in the entire valley hundreds of petroglyphs, mostly composed of lines, which experts think date from the 15th century and represent local cadastres. Then came the highland minorities of the Hmong and Yao. The town is one of the main market ones in the area, where several ethnic minority groups such as Hmong, Dao (Yao), Giáy, Pho Lu, and Tay live. groups, as well as by smaller numbers of Tày and Giay. These are the four main minority groups still present in Sa Pa district today. The Kinh (lowland Vietnamese) never originally colonised this highest of Việt Nam’s valleys, which lies in the shadow of Phan-Xi-Pǎng (Fansipan, 3143 m), the highest peak in the country.[1]Sa Pa District is located in Lào Cai Province, north-west Vietnam, and 380 km north-west of Hanoi, close to the border with China
This range includes Vietnam's highest mountain, Fan Si Pan, at a height of 3143 m above sea level. The town of Sa Pa lies at an altitude of about 1500 meters (4921 feet) above sea level. The climate is moderate and rainy in summer (May—August), and foggy and cold with occasional snowfalls in winter.
View on the mountains from downtown Sapa
Sa Pa is a quiet mountain town and home to a great diversity of ethnic minority peoples. The total population of 36,000 consists mostly of minority groups. Besides the Kinh (Viet) people (15%) there are mainly 5 ethnic groups in Sapa: Hmong 52%, Dao 25%, Tay 5%, Giay 2% and a small number of Xa Pho. Approximately 7,000 live in Sapa, the other 36,000 being scattered in small communes throughout the district.
Terraced fields in Sa Pa
Most of the ethnic minority people work their land on sloping terraces since the vast majority of the land is mountainous. Their staple foods are rice and corn. Rice, by its very nature of being a labour-intensive crop, makes the daily fight for survival paramount. The unique climate in Sapa has a major influence on the ethnic minorities who live in the area. With sub-tropical summers, temperate winters and 160 days of mist annually, the influence on agricultural yields and health related issues are significant.
The geographical location of the area makes it a truly unique place for many interesting plants and animals, allowing it to support many inhabitants. Many very rare or even endemic species have been recorded in the region.
Sa Pa town hall
The scenery of the Sa Pa region in large part reflects the relationship between the minority people and nature. This is seen especially in the paddy fields carpeting the rolling lower slopes of the Hoàng Liên Mountains. The impressive physical landscape which underlies this has resulted from the work of the elements over thousands of years, wearing away the underlying rock. On a clear day, the imposing peak of Fan Si Pan comes into view. The last major peak in the Himalayan chain, Fan Si Pan offers a real challenge to even the keenest walker, the opportunity of staggering views, and a rare glimpse of some of the last remaining primary rain forest in Vietnam.
