Hill Tribe Homestay // Trekking // Sapa Valley Vietnam Week 4
One of the best experiences in Vietnam was trekking through the tribal villages and into the mountains of the Sapa Valley Region. We stayed with a family that was part of the H'mong hill tribe, an ethnic minority group living in the Sapa region.

Hiking through Sapa Valley Vietnam to see the Rice Paddies & Local Villages
We highly recommend you visit Sapa in Vietnam! We spent one day hiking through the Sapa rice terraces and local Sapa hmong villages and not only did we see some incredible scenery but we learnt so much about the local way of life!

Hike to explore Giang Ta Chai Village (Dzao Tribe) | Trekking in Sapa, Vietnam Travel Video (Part 3)
On our final leg of our journey trekking all over the Sapa, Vietnam region, we hiked with the intention of reaching Giang Ta Chai Village - home of the Dzao Tribe. Our night spent at the traditional home stay was an enriching experience. The traditional beds with mosquito nets in a communal setting on the second floor was a far cry from our cozy bed with a view in Sapa; however, we were so tired and flat our exhausted from our full day hike that we could have slept on a bed of nails without even noticing it. Prior to sleeping we enjoyed chatting with a group of other travelers on our hike, while taking a few chugs of a local moonshine - provided by our tour guide - along with drinking several beers.

In the morning we woke up to a mountain high pile of pancakes and syrup that our group devoured. What appeared to be enough food to feed a small army ended up gone in mere minutes.
Finally we after packing up our belongings and having one more cup of coffee we began what would be our final hike of the trip.
Immediately, we were taken aghast by sheer steepness of the trail compared to our previous legs of the journey. Although I took time to record video and take photos, this was the most challenging part of the trail and I had to limit my time spent on documenting the journey in order to keep up with the pace of the group.
At times completely out of breathe, this was a far more arduous affair compounded further by the fact sections of the trail was muddy, making for slippery steps; luckily, none of us in the group ended up falling in it.
Our views at first were of magnificent vistas with engineered rice terraces descending in orderly fashion; however, we quickly reached a point where we entered a bamboo forest with terrain even muddier than what we had just experienced.
The reward for all of this hiking was a cascading waterfall offering shady reprieve and a much needed break-point prior to us all having lunch. I think our guide could instinctively tell we were knackered at this point, so we ended up hanging out in this area for at least twice as long as any other rest stop along the way.
The arduous trek had come to an end and we slept like babies the entire way back to Sapa in the passenger van that bumped along the unpaved sections of road. With just a few hours to kill before our train ride back to Hanoi, we spent time online getting caught up on emails, editing photos and stringing together clips of videos from our hike that would later be uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo.
Overall, our experience trekking in Sapa was both rewarding and challenging at the same time. Had I been in better health, I know I would have enjoyed it even more; however, oddly enough, I think the challenge of doing the hike just after dealing with a serious bout of food poisoning made the struggles more rewarding:

Hike to explore Ta Van Village (Dzay Tribe) | Trekking in Sapa, Vietnam Travel Video (Part 2)
After having lunch we set off on the second leg of our journey for the day en route to explore Ta Van Village (Dzay Tribe) in the mountainous region of Sapa, Vietnam. After a long hike in the morning lunch was anything but relaxing. The Black Hmong ladies who had followed us for the duration of our hike, making animals out of leaves, smiling and peppering us with questions and grinning from ear to ear suddenly changed their demeanor in complete 180 degrees. You buy from me. Then I go home. You don't buy one. Buy two. Buy from me. I made you horse.

Although I could see this coming a mile away, I still found it annoying. Although I appreciate these ladies depend on tourism to earn a living, I don't feel as though tourists should feel such extreme pressure to buy something. One particular gentleman at our table, who steadfastly refused to buy anything was harassed to point where he did eventually purchase a tiny trinket, just so that he could eat his lunch at peace.
When it comes to vendors, touts or service providers in the travel industry, I'm all about rewarding bad behavior and not giving in to the pressures of pressure tactics. For example, in this particular situation, the ladies realize that if they press hard enough they'll eventually annoy the heck out of tourist to the point they buy something. Compounded by the fact they're tired from the long hike, more likely than not, they'll be willing to pay a bit of money to have a quiet lunch.
Although lunch was bland, I was immediately thrilled that my stomach could handle the noodles, as just mere hours before I had still been suffering from a severe case of food poisoning.
The morning hike had tested my fitness levels and I had to push myself to the max to keep up with the rest of the group only being roughly around 70% of my normal self. My legs felt like jello at this point in the day and I couldn't believe we still had another significant portion to cover for the rest of the day. Mentally, I was preparing myself for what I felt I couldn't possibly physically accomplish.
Luckily, the second leg of the journey was both shorter and less physically demanding. Roughly speaking, I think we walked only 1/3 of the distance that we covered in the morning and there was less variability in the terrain on this portion of the hike.
When we finally reached Ta Van Village I felt a sense of relief knowing I could retire for the evening. Prior to dinner I spread all of my belongings out by my makeshift bed and napped for nearly two hours.
Our traditional home-stay was a basic wooden two story house which featured mats laid on the floor with a mosquito net covering them. I feel confident enough, that it wouldn't have mattered what the accommodations looked like for the majority of our group. We were all so tired from the hike we could have slept on top of a rock.
Although dead simple, in terms of style, I slept like a baby given how absolutely knackered I was from the trek. I knew that I needed a good sleep to be prepared for another go of it the next day:

Trekking with Hmong Villagers in Sapa, Vietnam
Part 1 of our Sapa Hmong Village Trip.
We went trekking with our Hmong tour guide around the mountains of Sapa. It is one of the beautiful places that you have to visit in Vietnam. The view is really breathtaking! The best time to visit is in July & August when the rice patties are about to be harvest!
Interesting fact about the Hmong Community in Sapa:
1. The government does not allow families to have more than two children.
2. They do not ball toss during New Years
3. Some families only farm enough to eat for the year. If they are short on food, they'll have to exchange labor for food.
4. Water Buffalos are only used to help plow farms. They will not get butchered for food unless a family member has passed away.
5. Bride Kidnapping is still a thing, but it has stopped for a while. You'll get sued if caught by the government.
We will cover all the details about Hmong in Sapa during our next video. Stay Tuned.

Sapa in Northern Vietnam is famous for its trekking activities. Anyone visiting Sapa naturally would like to do some trekking in that area.
The vast space and mountainous conditions of Sapa make trekking a very challenging experience. Nevertheless, it is certainly one of the experiences that everyone should gain at least once in a lifetime.
The minority tribes living in the remote mountain areas of Sapa add another interesting and colorful dimension to the travel experience of Sapa. They have their own languages, cultures and even fashion.
The largest tribe living in the Sapa area is the Black Hmong tribe.
This video covers a 5-hour trekking experience with a Black Hmong guide by the name of Tu, who brought us to his house for lunch after the trekking trip.

???????? Ethnic tribes of Sapa (Vietnam): travel documentary
#sapa #vietnam #documentary
The mountains of North Vietnam host an incredible variety of ethnic minorities. Armed with curiosity, I ventured on a 4-day trek in these valleys.
The history of the H'mong people is difficult to trace. It is believed they lived in Southern China for over 2,000 years. Beginning of 18th century, conflict with han Chinese settlers
caused H'mong migration south, in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The Black H'mong represent the majority of the population in the valleys near Sa Pa. H'mong girls create sophisticated embroideries for their clothes and they can be seen sewing in the valleys.
The second largest group in Sa Pa are the Red Dao. They also arrived in North Vietnam from China about 300 years ago. Their culture is considered one of the most colourful and unique. Red Dao people maintain traditional spiritual practices that include shamanism and
ancestor veneration. Le Cap Sac is a maturity ritual for a Dao manto become a descendant of Bang Vuong - the forefather of the Dao. During my travel, I had the opportunity to watch this ritual

Sapa ( Sa Pa ) Vietnam - Hiking with H'mong
A paisagem e' fantastica! Super recomendo o passeio!
*
This is Sapa in northern Vietnam, one of the stops I did during my backpack in the Southeast Asia (November 2010).
Surely this was one of the most special places I went. Experiencing the culture and ethnic differences between the groups living in this place was a priceless experience. The video shows the village of H'mong, immigrants from Mongolia, which today has its roots in northern Vietnam.
After walking for five hours between the rice fields our group finally arrived to the H'mong village. Surely the fact that it was raining and we're in the mud (which was not a problem at all fot the nativer) enriched even more the experience! The landscape is fantastic! Strongly recommend the tour!

Cat Cat Village Hiking Tour visiting Black Hmong Tribe nearby Sapa, Vietnam Travel Video
In our latest travel video we embark on a short hike from our base in Sapa to visit Cat Cat Village (Black Hmong Tribe) early in the morning. With so many different hiking options to choose from it was difficult narrowing it down to just one specific route. Sapa is the perfect launching pad for trekking in the region to nearby minority ethnic villages. Hikes cater for all skill levels, as some villages are just several kilometers away whereas others involve multiple day routes. We started our journey with nothing more than a rough idea of where we were going, as pointed out by the manager working at our hotel.

Once we got away from the town we really started to enjoy the hike. Along the way we were treated to spectacular views of mountain vistas, cascading rice terraces, and wooden homes.
Not long after we started our journey, we were greeted by three ladies who asked us a plethora of different questions before trying to sell us some homemade crafts. They were polite and kind at first; however, I knew things were about to change as we approached close to the village.
The pressure to purchase something started to mount as the ladies revved up their negotiating tactics. Although I had no intentions to buy anything, Audrey was still searching for a few small gifts to send back home.
Although we ended up buying something, it was a little off-putting how aggressive they were. Buying from one lady wasn't enough; they wanted us to shop from the entire trio. Audrey eventually ended up buying one more item from a lady who started playing free music for no longer than 10 seconds.
Feeling relieved that they finally went away, we continued on with our hike.
Once we reached the village we spend time exploring around some of the traditional homes and pathways that were lined by simple shops selling everything from trinkets to cowboy hats.
I ended up purchasing that cowboy hat :P As many of you may - or may not - know I'm a man of many hats; especially, those that are unique or what some might describe as being cheesy.
Exploring these frontier parts of Northern Vietnam had me feeling a bit like a cowboy, so I suppose it was a rather fitting acquisition to put on top of my head.
Feeling tired from the excursion we headed back up the steep serpentine roads that lead to our hotel in Sapa. Unfortunately, things would go downhill for me after this trek, as I started feeling sick to my stomach:
