Ancient Sapara Monastery Akhaltsikhe Georgia
I visited the ancient Sapara Monastery, tucked up in the mountains about 12km from Akhaltsikhe, I took a taxi there and got him to wait for me as it was too far too walk and chances of hitchiking were slim. The Taxi cost 20 GEL/ £6 return. After I met up with Temo, a Georgian Local from Akahltsikhe, he showed me an impressive viewpoint of the city.

Sapara Monastery (Georgian: საფარის მონასტერი) is a Georgian Orthodox monastery in the Akhaltsikhe District of Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia.
It has existed from at least the 9th century, and has numbered among its monks many important figures in Georgian ecclesiastical history. At the end of the 13th century Sapara became a possession of the Jakeli family, whose leader, Sargis Jakeli, was adept at staying on good terms with the Mongols, which enabled Samtskhe to enjoy a peace unusual for the time. When he grew old, Sargis took monastic orders and changed his name to Saba. His son Beka built the largest of the 12 churches here, St Saba's Church, named after the saint whose name his father had adopted, one of the most architecturally important churches of its time. The 14th-century frescoes inside are of high quality.
From the end of the 16th century until the beginning of the 17th century the Sapara Monastery became empty due to the expansion of Turkish policy into Samtskhe and during this process the monastery's icons and other treasures were taken to more protected areas of Georgia.

Akhaltsikhe Georgia
The capital and biggest town of Samtskhe-Javakheti, Akhaltsikhe means ‘New Castle’ in Georgian. The Rabati castle dominating the town from the north side of the Potskhovi River hasn't been new since the 12th century but it was lavishly restored a few years ago, helping to turn a town that was previously a sad case of post-Soviet decline into a reasonably attractive stop and jumping-off point for Vardzia.

What is the Rabati Castle Akhaltsikhe like? Is it worth visiting?

Rabati Castle - Akhaltsikhe, Georgia
How to visit Rabati castle in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia.
Dating back to the 9th century and with a very colourful history, this castle stands out as one of the greatest historical buildings in Georgia. It has been tastefully renovated and improved recently so it is possible to access the walls, towers and internal buildings.
The views of the surrounding area are spectacular.
It is free to enter and walk around the bottom section of the castle and for only 6 Lari - $ US 2.11 you can gain access to the upper section with its impressive mosque, museum and citadel.
As Mandy was suffering from stomach issues picked up in Borjomi, she sat out the tour and left me to explore the castle in full.
If you have time in Georgia and are planning to visit the ancient cave city of Vardzia, then Akhaltsikhe is a great small town to base yourself. There are transport links to Borjomi and Tbilisi. Rabati Castle / რაბათის ციხე / Крепость Рабат / - 4K aerial video footage DJI Inspire 1
Rabati Castle (Georgian: რაბათის ციხე), is a medieval castle complex in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia. Built in the 13th century, initially was called the Lomisa castle until it was conquered by Ottomans.
According to The Georgian Chronicles the city was established in the 9th century by Guaram Mampal, son of the King of Tao. From the 13th to the end of 14th centuries it was the capital city of Samtskhe-Saatabago, ruled by the Georgian princely (mtavari) family and a ruling dynasty of the Principality of Samtskhe, the House of Jaqeli.
In 1393 the city was attacked by the armies of Tamerlane. Despite the Turko-Mongol invasions fortress withstood and continued to thrive. After the Treaty of Constantinople in 1590, the whole territory of Samtskhe-Saatabago went under the rule of Ottoman Empire. Turks Mostly used to build defensive edifices. In 1752 first mosque was built in Rabati. In the first half of the 8th century Prince Vakhushti of Kartli writes By the end of the 18th century Metropolitan John writes that despite the fact that a large part of the population has been Islamized, there's still functioning Orthodox church. After the Treaty of Georgievsk between the Kingdom of Kartli and Russian Empire was signed the question of the fate of Akhaltsikhe arose. The first attempt to take the fortress in 1810 fell. Russians took the city after 18 years in 1828. After the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829, the Ottomans yielded the part of Akhaltiske Region.

Rabati Castle
Rabati Fortress, Akhaltsikhe
Built in the 13th century, Rabati castle developed under the influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries and this is reflected in its architecture. Within the 7 hectares castle complex there is a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue.
Rabati Castle is a medieval structure in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia, which dates back to the 13th century. Originally, the fortress was called the Lomisa Castle until it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans ruled the land for centuries until Russia took it due to the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829.
A renovated Rabati Castle was opened in Akhaltsikhe in August 2012. Restoration and reconstruction works on Rabati began in May 2011 and covered a space of seven hectares. Old, nearly destroyed buildings were restored by architects and engineers, using archive materials and images. A mosque, a minaret, a synagogue, a Christian church, the Jakelis’ Palace, a museum and a citadel are the restored antique buildings, which can be seen at the renovation site.
HITCHHIKING TO VARDZIA ANCIENT CAVE CITY - GEORGIA (Travel Vlog)
I hitchhiked to Vardzia, the ancient city of caves. One of the most popular attractions in Georgia. The journey there from Akhaltsikhe took me 6 hours (1 hour on the way back) On the way I was invited into a mechanics and given beer by some local Georgians, we had fun (even though we couldn't understand each other) Any Georgians watching feel free to translate for me lol...
I also got invited into a small peaceful village called Rustavi. Tried tuta and alucha for the first time. Very nice!! Then I finally made it to the cave city. Which was built as a shelter from attacks in the 12 century. It has 13 levels and contains over 600 rooms.
IT IS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THIS FUN DAY OUT WITH YOU ALL, HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT!
