Inside a World FAMOUS SHIPWRECK!! Bimini Bahamas Fishing and Lobstering!
On this trip to Bimini Bahamas, We explore the world famous SS Sapona Shipwreck. It was used in World War 1, then sold and used to help aide in storage for rum runners during the prohibition, then it ran aground during a hurricane in 1926. During World War 2 it was used for target practice by the navy and air force. The remains of the ship are still Just off Bimini and its and awesome spot for subs divers and smokeless. It was an awesome experience and I definitely recommend checking it out if you go to the Bahamas!
We do some high speed trolling for wahoo and deep dropping for yellow eye snapper and mystic grouper. As well as spear some lobsters for dinner which is LEGAL in the Bahamas.

SS Sapona | Half-Sunk Shipwreck off Bimini, Bahamas
The Sapona is a shipwreck just a few miles from the island of Bimini that has great snorkeling opportunities. Built in the beginning of the 20th century and run aground soon after, the ship served many purposes such as a casino, oil storage, and even target practice for pilots. Being built around World War I, steel was in short supply so the boat was made primarily of concrete. This unusual choice of material led to today where the Sapona is one of the most unique wrecks in the world.

A little backround on the sunken ship:
SS Sapona was a concrete-hulled cargo steamer that ran aground near Bimini during a hurricane in 1926. The wreck of the ship is easily visible above the water, and is both a navigational landmark for boaters and a popular dive site.
Sapona was built by the Liberty Ship Building Company of Wilmington, North Carolina as part of a fleet of concrete ships authorized by Woodrow Wilson during World War I, because steel was in short supply. Like many others in the fleet, the war was over before the ship was completed, and Sapona was sold for scrap to Carl Fisher, one of the developers of Miami Beach. It was initially used as a casino and later for oil storage. The 1936 book Miami Millions claims that Mr. Fisher took it out to sea and sank it, but it was in fact purchased in 1924 by Bruce Bethel.
Bethel moved the ship to Bimini, using it as a warehouse for alcohol during the era of Prohibition. Bethel also intended to use the ship as a floating nightclub, although this plan never came to fruition. In 1926, the ship ran aground in a hurricane and broke apart.
The wreck lies in about 15 feet (4.6 m) of water, the stern broken off and partially submerged by hurricanes that struck in 2004. Little concrete is left on the hull because of the effects of bombing and weathering. The wreck itself and the surrounding area is a popular site for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Diving The Wreck Of The S S Sapona, Bimini: A Sordid History!
Probably the SHALLOWEST wreck I have ever dived, but one with a truly sordid history. I give you the S.S. Sapona!
It's really a fun wreck to scuba dive or snorkel with tons of iconic photo and video shots, but more than that, we wanted to share with you the history of the S.S. Sapona, which draws from both world wars, the prohibition and the Great Depression and includes a whole host of interesting characters.
On top of that, the wreck features amazing coral growth! She has been sunk since 1926, so she's a fully matured reef system now.
The S.S. Sapona for me is Bimini in the Bahamas' can't miss, must dive site, and with it's sordid history, I believe this dive belongs on every diver's bucket list.

Wreck of the Sapona - Bimini, Bahamas
The 270-foot Sapona was built by Henry Ford in 1911. She served as a troop transport for just one trip during World War I. After the war, the Sapona was used by rumrunners between the Bahamas and Florida during Prohibition. Some say she was anchored and turned in to a private drinking and gambling club or simply a storage warehouse for rum. A hurricane in the late 1920s drove the ship aground between South Bimini and Cat Cay, where she only partially submerged.
Today, the Sapona is very popular with divers and snorklers. A large portion of the ship remains above water.
