Along the way we'll explore Moerenuma Park and the Sapporo Beer Museum in Sapporo before stopping for the night at the quaint lakeside town of Toyako Onsen. On day two we'll visit the area affected by the 2000 eruption of Mt. Usu, then walk around Onuma Park before finally finishing in Hakodate to take in one of the top three night views in all Japan.

Hokkaido (北海道, Hokkaidō, literally Northern Sea Circuit), formerly known as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, or Yesso, is Japan's second largest island; it is also the largest and northernmost of Japan's 47 prefectures. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu, although the two islands are connected by the underwater railway Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city.

Land rights, political rights, rights concerning livelihood and natural resources, they have all remained unequal. But according to the UN Declaration indigenous people should receive these rights as a matter of course. So to Ainu and other indigenous peoples throughout the world this was a truly epoch making declaration.

The Ainu Mosir (the Ainu name for Hokkaido) Ainu territories were taken by the Japanese government and so Ainu lost rights to land and those rights have remained stolen from them. Essentially we want them returned.

Because the Ainu population is so small it is impossible to gain seats in government through the normal election process. So like the arrangement made in New Zealand with the Maori community we want a designated number of seats in government reserved for representatives of the Ainu community. Exactly how many is a matter for debate but the figure can be decided through consultation.

We do traditional dance but mainly we arrange and adapt traditional dance forms matching them to music. We try to incorporate our own forms of Ainu expression into our performances.

I think to the general population held an image of Ainu as being poor and dirty. It is an image that I don't think has completely disappeared.

I hated being an Ainu. I had no self confidence. I tried to hide my Ainu identity, I was embarrassed.

When I saw Canadian indigenous people performing and thought cool, I want to be like them. These were indigenous people from abroad but really I wanted to be inspired by my own Ainu people. Now I want to become someone who can influence and inspire the younger generation in the same way that I was influenced and inspired.

The Ainu, a name that means human, lived in the forests of Hokkaido and surrounding islands for centuries, fishing for salmon and hunting deer and worshipping the spirits of the sun, thunder, water and fire as well as plants and animals.
Having recently won recognition from the Japanese government of their unique identity, Japan's indigenous Ainu community are now struggling back from the margins of society and are beginning to assert their ethnicity with pride

The story that's called me | Yuka Watanabe | TEDxSapporo
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. An Actress and Model, Yuka Watanabe shares her very personal story of her childhood and family.
An actress and singer, Yuka Watanabe is looking for what she can tell while empathizing people that she meets through activities of teaching English and singing.
After she entered the School of Musical Theatre at Arts Educational School in England, she belonged to a choir and played and sang at various large halls and churches in Europe such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. At the time of graduation, she earned the prize of “the Best Singer of the Year.” She was selected as a finalist of a soprano solo section at the classical music contest, “Three Rivers Young Musician of the Year” which was held in England.
Following graduation, she entered the Vocal department at Royal Academy of Music. She sang Beethoven Symphony No.9, which was conducted by Sir Collin Davis, an internationally renowned conductor.
In Japan, she became a Hokkaido representative of Miss Universe Japan 2012 as well as a national semi-finalist, which was in the top 14. She appeared as a fashion model and a solo singer at an art show which is sponsored by Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and an event held by Hanii Ito, a designer of Hany Wedding.
She has performed two roles including the leading part in a short film of Sapporo Movie Sketch 2014 and also translated and dubbed the film into English.
