Costa Rica - Scenery and Wildlife of Sarapiqui River: Green Iguana
The Sarapiquí River, or Rio Sarapiquí, in Costa Rica runs in the Pacific side of the country. It is a tributary of the San Juan River and forms the eastern border of Sarapiquí Canton. The area around the river is mostly lowlands tropical rainforest, having lush vegetation with a large variety of plant, animal and insect life. This river is navigable and is a local trading artery, and also supports fishing and tourism activity. It offers plenty of amazing natural scenery as well as wildlife such as: green iguanas, howler monkeys, mangrove swallows, sunbitterns and snake birds among others.

Landslide / Mudslide in Escazu area of San Jose, Costa Rica, Nov 4, 2010
I am here in the Zapote area of San Jose studying Spanish at C.O.S.I.. Because of all the rain (6.3 / 16cm in 2 hours alone yesterday) over the last few days from Tropical Storm Tomas, and especially the torrential downpours last night, part of the Pico Blanco mountain gave way & buried parts of the Escazu area in San Jose. At this point, 17 are confirmed dead & dozens of others are missing. We are OK here in Zapote, where there is no risk of landslide. (about 8 miles from Escazu) Schools are closed throughout the entire country, which is in a state of emergency & red alert, because of further landslide fears.

Kicking back on a hammock in Puerto Viejo
Located in Limon province on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a beach lover’s paradise. Here amidst the exotic flora and fauna, lies a vibrant seaside town with gorgeous beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and some of the most amazing surfing opportunities. Fast becoming one of Costa Rica’s premier tourist hot spots, many international surfers come here from all over the world to ride the famed Salsa Brava waves, making this Caribbean influenced town is a ‘must visit’ place when in Limon.
Simply known as Puerto Viejo by the locals and not to be confused with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui in Heredia, this bustling town lies 34 miles south east of Puerto Limon, and 10.2 miles south of Cahuita. Formerly a quiet little fishing village, Puerto Viejo has a charm that is all its own. Becoming increasingly popular, especially with the young hip crowd, this town is among the top rated surfing destinations of the world. With its relaxed atmosphere and its own unique blend of Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous cultures, Puerto Viejo is a lively place to have a fun relaxing vacation.
Famous for its fabulous beaches, Puerto Viejo’s Salsa Brave beach is a surfer’s paradise. However, be warned of the waters here that have a strong rip current. So, swimming is not advisable. This beach is for surfing experts only. Aside from surfing, one can also indulge in horseback tours of the area, as well as snorkeling, diving, mountain biking, kayaking or boogie boarding. Whether you are looking forward to having a good time or just a laidback retreat, the shores of Puerto Viejo are a great place to kick back and soak in the sun.

Unseasonable rain inundates northern Costa Rica
Unseasonable rain inundates northern Costa Rica. On Wednesday, December 14, the National Meteorological Institute in Costa Rica reported that days of unusually heavy rains have affected residents throughout the country's northeast and the Caribbean coast. In Sarapiquí canton of Heredia province, more than 1,000 people were evacuated to some 15 shelters provided by the government's disaster response agency to remove them from the danger of flooding after over 250 millimeters of precipitation fell in a 24-hour period. Food is also being delivered to several isolated communities. The National Emergency Commission meanwhile issued a yellow alert for Sarapiquí canton and the Caribbean coastal region, with residents in mountainous areas who were cautioned against possible landslides and overflowing rivers as rains are expected to continue for the rest of the week.
We thank the National Meteorological Institute, National Emergency Commission and all other agencies for your help in ensuring the safety of affected residents. May our more considerate actions as a vegan world restore planetary balance for all beings.
Supreme Master Ching Hai wants to convey this message of gratitude to all governments, organizations and relief workers from every corner of the world:
Thank you, all the international and national help that brings care and necessities to afflicted victims. Thank you all all the relief workers for taking time and forsaking your own comfort, even traveling great distance on unfavorable roads and conditions to bring love and assistance to people in time of need. May Heaven bless you abundantly for your generosity and noble sacrifice.
