Captain Fernando Lagoon Boat Tour, Negombo Sri Lanka
Captain Romesh Fernando gave us a wonderful first hand experience of life in the Negombo Lagoon. An experienced fisherman, we learned about the various techniques for harvesting fish along with information on the birds that work these waterways for their survival.
There's a sense of giving back as well. The captain has been instrumental in starting an initiative to clean up the lagoon. Along with coordinating volunteers for garbage reduction, he is manufacturing cloth bags to help replace the ubiquitous plastic ones that end up in the lagoon.
I highly recommend Captain Fernando if you plan on the Negombo Lagoon tour.

Alternative means for Fuel Subsidiary is a cheating Negombo protest
Fuel Subsidiary for the fishermen given by the Sri Lankan government after mass protesting against sudden increase by over night in 2012 February have been stopped for 8 months now without official notification. After several actions of pressure groups among fisher people, now government is trying to compensate the 8 month fuel subsidiary gap with alternative means.
According to fishers, government authorities have get signed a agreement from fishers which, in 12th article allow fishers to select 3 preferred items from the given list and in 13th article before the signature says I here by declare I will accept anything offer by government ....
lot of poor fishers have signed this agreement without reading properly and only later found that they are being cheated.
A peaceful protest was held in Negombo lagoon today (31 Jan 2014) near Kothalawela bridge, against cutoff the fuel subsidiary and trying to cheat the fisher community. Fishers asked to authorities to give back their fuel subsidiary.
About 400 fishers participated to the protest with their boats. Mr.Sarath Gunarathne, Dep. Min to the Fisheries visited to the place and gave a word to fishers that he will going to discuss this matter with the president and look for solution.
The protest was organized by the Unity of Fisher organizations with the support of the Catholic Church.
