CAGLIARI - Italy Travel Guide | Around The World
Cagliari is an Italian municipality and the capital of the island of Sardinia, an autonomous region of Italy. Cagliari's Sardinian name Casteddu literally means castle. It has about 150,000 inhabitants, while its metropolitan city (including Cagliari and 16 other nearby municipalities) has more than 431,000 inhabitants. According to Eurostat, the population of the Functional urban area, the commuting zone of Cagliari, rises to 476,974. Cagliari is the 26th largest city in Italy and the largest city on the island of Sardinia.
An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the rule of several civilisations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification attesting to human settlement over the course of some five thousand years, from the Neolithic to today. Historical sites include the prehistoric Domus de Janas, very damaged by cave activity, a large Carthaginian era necropolis, a Roman era amphitheatre, a Byzantine basilica, three Pisan-era towers and a strong system of fortification that made the town the core of Spanish Habsburg imperial power in the western Mediterranean Sea. Its natural resources have always been its sheltered harbour, the often powerfully fortified hill of Castel di Castro, the modern Casteddu, the salt from its lagoons, and, from the hinterland, wheat from the Campidano plain and silver and other ores from the Iglesiente mines.
Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1848, when Turin became the formal capital of the kingdom (which in 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy). Today the city is a regional cultural, educational, political and artistic centre, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments. It is also Sardinia's economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, an international airport, and the 106th highest income level in Italy (among 8,092 comuni), comparable to that of several northern Italian cities.
It is also the seat of the University of Cagliari, founded in 1607, and of the Primate Roman Catholic archdiocese of Sardinia, since the 5th century AD. The main beach of Cagliari is the Poetto. It stretches for about 8 kilometres (5 mi), from Sella del Diavolo (Devil's Saddle) up to the coastline of Quartu Sant'Elena. Poetto is also the name of the district located on the western stretch of the strip between the beach and Saline di Molentargius (Molentargius's Salt Mine). Another smaller beach is that of Calamosca near the Sant'Elia district. On the coast between Calamosca and Poetto beaches, among the cliffs of the Sella del Diavolo, lies Cala Fighera, a small bay.Cagliari is close to other seaside locations such as Santa Margherita di Pula, Chia, Geremeas, Solanas, Villasimius and Costa Rei.
The city has numerous libraries and is also home to the State Archive, containing thousands of handwritten documents from the foundation of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1325 AD) to the present. In addition to numerous local and university department libraries, the most important libraries are the old University Library, with thousands of ancient books, the Provincial Library, the Regional Library, and the Mediateca of the Mediterranean, which contains the municipal archive and library collection.
Considerable remains of the ancient city of Karalis are still visible, including those of the Tuvixeddu necropolis, the Roman amphitheatre, traditionally called Is centu scalas (One hundred steps), and of an aqueduct used to provide generally scarce water. Still visible are also some ancient cisterns of vast extent, the ruins of a small circular temple, and numerous sepulchres on a hill outside the modern town that appear to have formed the necropolis of the ancient city. The amphitheatre stages open-air operas and concerts during the summer.
The Palaeo-Christian Basilica of San Saturnino, dedicated to a martyr killed under Diocletian's reign, Saturninus of Cagliari, patron saint of the city, was built in the 5th century. Of the original building the dome and the central part remain, to which two arms (one with a nave and two aisles) were added later. A Palaeo-Christian crypt is also under the church of San Lucifero (1660), dedicated to Saint Lucifer, a bishop of the city. The church has a Baroque façade with ancient columns and sculpted parts, some of which came from the nearby necropolis.

Cagliari is the capital city of the Italian island of Sardinia. It’s known for the hilltop Castello, a medieval walled quarter situated high over the rest of the town. Architectural highlights include the 13th-century Cagliari Cathedral. Housed in a former arsenal, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari displays bronze objects, Roman ceramics and artifacts from the Nuragic age to the Byzantine era.

Forget flying: the best way to arrive in Sardinia’s historic capital is by sea, the city rising in a helter-skelter of golden-hued palazzi, domes and facades up to the rocky centrepiece, Il Castello. Although Tunisia is closer than Rome, Cagliari is the most Italian of Sardinia’s cities. Vespas buzz down tree-fringed boulevards and locals hang out at busy cafes tucked under arcades in the seafront Marina district.
Like many Italian cities, Cagliari wears its history on its sleeve and everywhere you go you come across traces of its rich past: ancient Roman ruins, museums filled with prehistoric artefacts, centuries-old churches and elegant palazzi. Edging east of town brings you to Poetto beach, the hub of summer life with its limpid blue waters and upbeat party scene.

The old medieval town (called Castello in Italian, Casteddu de susu in Sardinian, the upper castle) lies on top of a hill with a view of the Gulf of Cagliari (also known as Angels' Gulf). Most of its city walls are intact and include two early 14th-century white limestone towers, the Torre di San Pancrazio and the Torre dell'Elefante, typical examples of Pisan military architecture.

DINNER AT LUIGI POMATA IN CAGLIARI, SARDINIA
The final stop on my foodie tour of Sardinia was Cagliari, the capital city. On our first night, we had an epic dinner at Luigi Pomata, one of the city's best restaurants. Chef / owner Luigi Pomata focuses on local recipes, especially featuring fish and specifically tuna. Most of the dinner was seafood-focused but since I'm not a fan of seafood, they had a special menu for me and some of the other land-lubbers.
Dinner started with a pizzetta, topped with mushrooms, tomatoes and mozzarella. Then we had some macaroni with artichoke and cheese sauce followed by more pasta, stuffed with pork.
I flew to Sardinia on Air Italy ( in their foodie-friendly Business Class cabin. They have frequent flights to Sardinia from their hub in Milan. They have daily, direct flights to Milan from LAX and JFK and a few direct flights a week from SFO and MIA.

Poetto di Cagliari & Sella del Diavolo, Cagliari (CA), Sardinia, Italy
Cagliari's Poetto is an excellent example of a city beach and is a popular spot with locals and tourists alike. The white sandy beach stretches for 8km from the foot of the promontory of Capo Sant'Elia, as far as Quartu Sant'Ellena.
Poetto beach is very well serviced with excellent facilities many of which remain open throughout the year including: water sports including sailing, kite surfing, windsurfing; beach volleyball; beach football; beach tennis; beach clubs; beach kiosks; sunbed hire; public toilets; funfair; amusement arcade; fast food stalls; discotheques; marina.
Several excellent restaurants are located along the beach, as well as several private beach clubs, some of which remain open until the late hours and turn into music venues playing a variety of types of music.
The prominent Sella del Diavolo (Devil's Saddle) is one of Cagliari's most noticeable landmarks found at one end of the beach, was created as far as legend goes by when Lucifer was knocked off his horse when fighting with the angel Michael in the bay of Cagliari.

7 Sardinian Travel Tips
Tom & Derek explore the Italian island of Sardinia and give seven of their best travel tips.
Cagliari - The Stunning city
The Stunning city of Cagliari
Straight away after arriving to Sardinia we felt the special atmosphere of the place even though it was already dark. Narrow streets and tall buildings looked so charming in the lamplight. We booked our accommodation in one of the lanes of Castello District, closeby to Saint Remy Bastion so that it is easy for us to see around. It was late, but our host Gabriella was waiting for us. The place she offered for rent was magical. All the walls as well as the ceiling were covered with art pieces. It made an impression of a cosy arts gallery for our use. She also didn’t mind us cooking at that time of a night.
Next day morning, the first thing we decided to do, was to visit San Benedetto Market and buy some local products for next couple of days. Since we didn’t have any breakfast we stopped by a pastry shop Pasticeria Pirani right behind the building of the market. It was such a nice experience to try what people from Cagliari eat every day. Pastries were mainly stuffed with mozzarella and tomatoes, but some of them also with mushroom or eggplant.
The market was divided into two floors. In the basement there were stalls with fish and seafood and on the ground floor one could find a regular market with vegetables, meat, cheese or pastries. Sardinia is known for goat cheese, so we got some to see how it is.
On the same day we went around Castello to see the Cagliari Cathedral, Carlo Alberto Square and the Palace Square located only 3 minutes from the flat we were living in. Then we found a viewpoint near the Unione Sarda lift and after staring at the stunning picture for a while, we headed down to Marina. We strolled through narrow streets and in the end we got to the port. After a short walk along the port, we came back inside the streets of Marina to have a quick snack before we move further.
After the meal, we started our 5 - kilometer walk from Marina to Calamosca beach, visiting The Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria on our way. The view from the top of the Shrine is worth attention, you can see Castello and the city hill form a different perspective.
The Calamosca beach turned out to be quite small, but interesting – with the Tower and Light House of Calamosca on the right.
On the next day we went past San Pancrazio Tower and Tedeschina Tower to the Bastion of Holy Cross. We could admire the other side of the city. Through the Elephant Tower, walking down, we reached the Jenne Square in Marina again. From there we took a bus to Poetto beach. There are 2 buses from Via Roma going to the city beach, the PQ and PF. The travel takes only 15 minutes and the ticket costs 1.30 EUR. The beach is surprising. It consists of 8 kilometers of sand with a mountain view and the Devil’s Saddle - a significant feature of the city.
The last thing we really wanted to do was trying out pizza made here. Pizzeria Floris was the place we chose after reading reviews. No name was displayed on the façade of the building, but with the address we managed to find it. People were ordering a take away mostly, since there was not that much seating space inside. Prices were very decent. We had foccacia and pizza. Their wooden stove where they made pizza definitely had an impact on the taste. The owner recommended consuming while the food is still hot to enjoy more and we did so. That’s how an authentic pizza should taste like.
We were thinking of visiting Costa Rei or Villasimius, which are easily accessible by bus from Cagliari, but on that particular day we wanted to go, there was a bus and train strike so we wouldn’t be able to come back. This means we must come back to Sardinia one day.
