Sarek: first time in the ultimate Swedish wilderness (extended cut)
Sarek National Park is a national park in Jokkmokk Municipality, Lapland in the north of Sweden. Established in 1909–1910, the park is one of the oldest national parks in Europe. The shape of the Sarek park is roughly circular with an average diameter of about 50 km. The park has about 200 peaks over 1,800 m and there are approximately 100 glaciers in the Sarek National Park.
Sarek is a popular area for experienced hikers and mountaineers. There are no marked trails or accommodations and only two bridges aside from those in the vicinity of its borders. The area is among those that receives the heaviest rainfall in Sweden, making hiking dependent on weather conditions. It is also intersected by turbulent streams that are hazardous to cross without proper training. The delta of the Rapa River is considered one of Europe‘s most noted views and the summit of Skierfe mountain offers an overlook of that glacial valley.
In a group of three, we pursued zig-zag crossing of the national park, having started in Kvikkjokk and finishing in Saltoluokta after ten days of hiking (and some rowing, too). Here, one really relies on himself/herself: no marked trails (though there are some footpaths), no huts or cabins, frequent river crossings and muddy terrain of river wetlands.
Still, without any doubt, this place is a deep north paradise: most likely, you will have it for yourselves, with a very limited number of other people around. High mountain peaks covered by majestic glaciers, beautiful river deltas, birch woods, reindeer and - if you are lucky - elks.

We headed up to Umea from Stockholm and just hung out for a bit but made time to rent a car and drive up to the little arctic city of Jokkmokk, just above the arctic circle in Swedish Lapland. The weather was a bit rainy but we had cozy accommodation in the Asgard Hostel in town. This part of Sweden has several national parks, is famous for hiking and trekking, and is hope to the Sami people who are semi nomadic reindeer herders. There are several great museums and visitor centers to explore but the real draw is the natural beauty of the area. Forests carpeted with blueberry bushes ready to be gathered; glacially carved lakes still as mirrors, and mountains beckoning the eager adventures. And the occasional fika, of course. Berries can be gathered by anyone and consumed on the fly, which we did with gusto. We started off our visit with a day trip to Stora Sjöfallet national park. In addition to a wonderful, modern visitor center, the nature here is incredible. After our hike, we even glimpsed a giant reindeer bull with massive antlers (massive to us anyway). On day 2, the weather did not cooperate but we spent several hours at the Attje Museum in Jokkmokk where we learned about the Sami Culture from history to contemporary times. It was really fascinating.
We headed back south on our third day (more rain) and stopped to pick up our official arctic circle certificate where we met a gregarious shop owner full of personality then on to Storforsen which is the longest cascade in Sweden and stunning. I hadn't seen anything like it, not so much the rushing water but the surrounding rock formations with mini canyons and water running everywhere.

The Sami's and Me: Herding Reindeer in Sarek National Park - Part 2
Check out my photography / blog website @ nomadicadam.co.uk - All of my photography work is published on my site, and plenty to read about all my travels.
In addition, follow my regular blog there, for information regarding my life living and working in the Swedish Arctic with the indigenous Sami people!
Throughout November and December, the Sami people gather the reindeer from the mountains and forests, with the end goal of separating the reindeer out into their respective families during the 'skiljningzar' events (See other video). This video follows me and the other herders from the Jåhkågaska Sami Community as we head up into Sarek National Park for a week long trip, to herd up all the reindeer that we find, and migrate with them down into the low-lands where we have a large pen with which we put the reindeer into!
This video gives an insight into what kind of work the Sami reindeer herders put in to find and herd their reindeer each year.

Midnight sun over the Laponian area, Jokkmokk, Sweden
Midnight sun over the Laponian area near Jokkmokk and the Lule river. Jokkmokk or is located in Norrbotten County, just North of the arctic circle. The Sámi name Jåhkåmåhkke means River's Curve.
The world heritage site Laponia is a joining together of six large nature areas and reserves of which Muddus, Sarek, Stora Sjöfallets and Padjelanta are the best known. But it didn't happen just like that, a lot of thought went into it. After careful consideration a committee of wise elders came to the decision that this area had a unique cultural and natural character. Laponia was a fact, with the footnote that it was both a natural and cultural heritage site.

A movie from our dog sledding trip in the north of Sweden, along the Kungsleden trail, which we held in March / April 2019. Sometimes the sun was shining, but for most days a strong wind was blowing and we were struggling with a snow blizzard. We made our trip thanks to Mattie from Jokkmokkguiderna from Jokkmokk in Sweden and thanks to his wonderful husky dogs. This film records 8 days of our adventure
