Places to see in ( Sarlat - France ) Sarlat Market
Sarlat Market is a must for food lovers. All year long, depending on the season you can find foie gras, the famous cepe mushrooms, magret (duck breasts) & confit (conserves of duck or goose), truffles, walnuts, strawberries and countless other delicious local products to tempt the visitor’s taste buds.
There is a lively and cheerful atmosphere, the stalls are colourful and wonderful smells abound, all set against the background of a beautiful town with exceptional, historical architecture.
Place Boissarie (near the covered market, Sainte Marie church): on Saturday from 9 am to 12 am, in December, January and February. Place de la Liberté: on Wednesday from 2 pm, from November to February. This market is open to truffle-harvesters, companies from agribusiness, merchants and restorers. As one of France’s 100 Most Beautiful Villages, Sarlat is picture-postcard perfection personified.
The region is one of the best you’ll find in France gastronomically, architecturally and culturally. It’s full of foie gras, chock-a-block with chocolate, bursting with wild boar and topped up with truffles. And when it comes to running a market, the result seems to be as effortlessly splendid as a gregarious household throwing a party.
With its unusual setting at the bottom of a valley, it’s no surprise that this gem of a town was fought over for centuries between the English and the French. The intra-muros population of 10,000 or so peaks to about 120,000 in the summer and many of those peak days will fall on a Saturday, when a massive market takes over virtually every single street in the town.
Even if you come along on a Wednesday, however, you’ll not be disappointed by a food-dominated market that is simply enormous by any normal standards. The quality and range of food on offer is truly outstanding. The converted church of Place Boissarie (just off the Place de la Liberté) is the central covered market of the town and it’s worth taking time off browsing the stalls to take a lift that brings you up and slightly beyond the former bell-tower (Willy Wonka style) for great views of the whole town.

Sarlat la Canéda
Sarlat-la-Canéda is a medieval town in southwest France's Dordogne department. Its central Sainte-Marie Church, redesigned by architect Jean Nouvel, hosts an indoor food market, and a glass elevator in the bell tower offers city views. Sarlat Market sells local delicacies like foie gras and cheese. To the south, close to the Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, stands the bullet-shaped Lanterne des Morts tower.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, Dordogne - Travel in France
Sarlat-la-Canéda, or simply Sarlat, is a town in the Dordogne department, in Aquitaine in southwestern France. The region is known in France as the Périgord Noir (the Black Périgord).
It is one of the most appealing, and popular, of the Dordogne villages, (or towns). It developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos.
Because Sarlat has been ignored by the events of recent centuries most of the town has been preserved and is representative of 14th century France. Restoration work has been impeccable and authentic.

Sarlat la Canéda and the Dordogne Region of France
Sarlat la Caneda is located in the Dordogne region of France. It is less visited than more popular regions like Provence or Burgundy.
When dreaming of France, I imagine myself sitting in Luxembourg Gardens, strolling along the River Seine, through the narrow streets of the Latin Quarter, drinking strong coffee in the afternoon. No agenda, just walking, looking, tasting, smelling, enjoying. Of course, there is more to France than Paris. The honey colored buildings in the medieval town of Sarlat, create a warm welcoming feeling. The Dordogne region is know for it's gourmet specialties and the Sarlat Saturday Market is the place to find them. I spent the morning strolling from vendor to vendor, putting together the pieces...some creamy goat cheese, ripe red tomatoes, fresh tarragon, cod from the fishmonger...for that evening's feast. The surrounding country side is scenic and peaceful. The river side town of Vitrac has several canoe rental companies. It is an easy float down the Dordogne River, drifting by villages and ending in tiny Beynac. The village is built into the hillside and topped by 12th century gray stoned chateau. The hike up is steep but well worth it for the wide open view of the river valley. France has an abundance of bike trails. We rented from Bike Bus in Castelnaud. The owner, Joel, gave us some great local advice and a map. The ride to Daglan, through woods and fields, was easy and almost car free. Bring a sandwich, maybe some wine (actually definitely some wine) and stop for a picnic lunch along the river bank. What is it about travel that makes the ordinary...a taste of cheese, the ringing of a church bell, the smell of a fire burning in a chimney...seem extraordinary? I don't know but I will keep trying to find out.
