Q & A with the Sarnia Street Preacher
The following questions were asked:
1. A lot of people refer to you as the “street preacher.” What is your name and can you tell us a bit about yourself?
2. How long have you been doing this for: about how many hours a day do you spend out there, and when did you begin doing it?
3. Something that I personally wanted to understand was your motivation. So you’re out here all the time, shouting Bible versus on the corner of a very busy intersection. Why did you choose this particular approach? What is your motivation behind your actions?
4. What specifically are you hoping to accomplish, and how can you measure if what you’re doing is successful?
5. You used to have a megaphone, I understand you still have some sort of amplification system/microphone that you use. Some people are concerned that this is a public safety issue: disturbing the peace, amplified noise at an intersection, and distracting drivers. Have you ever considered changing locations, and what do you think about the safety issue of distracting drivers?
6. You’ve become somewhat of a public figure in Sarnia. You’re in the public eye, and thousands of people in the City see you regularly. When we announced that we were meeting with you, some people came forward with allegations about speaking inappropriately and even offensively to unwed mothers, working mothers, people with disabilities, people with tattoos, and children: telling them Santa isn’t real or that they’re going to hell. What’s your response to these allegations?
7. We’ve found that what you’re doing has brought up discussion surrounding concepts such as religious freedom, free speech, freedom of expression, and hate speech. “Hate Speech” is abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice against a particular group, especially on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation. In Canada, most laws prohibit publishing or displaying material that expresses an intention to discriminate, incite hate, or disturb the overall peace of citizens. There are people who believe that what you are doing crosses the line from freedom of expression and enters into hate speech. Have you ever given any thought to the legalities behind what you’re doing?
8. Have police ever been involved?
9. Something else that sparked my interest and motivation into doing this interview was there is a motion coming up at the next Sarnia City Council meeting. The motion that the councilor is bringing forth is that city staff investigate creating a bylaw that prohibits sound amplification or loud noises that could possibly distract drivers on municipal streets. He states there is significant danger to drivers and pedestrians at the corner of Murphy Rd and London Rd almost daily when an individual with an amplified speaker is talking, sometimes yelling at drivers. He states being one of the busiest corners of the city, it is clearly a strategic place for these individuals to advertise their message. Many drivers have been startled and pedestrians have been ignored at the crosswalks because drivers have been distracted by the amplified sounds that are coming from these folks. His stance is we need to keep our citizens safe from these distractions and create some sort of standard around what is acceptable or not for street-side advertisements. How do you respond to the fact that a motion is bring brought forward to investigate creating a bylaw surrounding what you’re doing?
10. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
