Sarsfield Bridge - Limerick Ireland
Sarsfield Bridge is a historic bridge, having been built around 1827. Until the late 1980s, it was the main road bridge in the city. It is rather grander than the Thomond bridge, being wider and having balusters along the parapets, between which the river can be seen. Graceful lamp-posts adorn the walls.

Royal De Luxe #Limerick Giant Day 2 - Afternoon
Following her afternoon nap at Lee Estate, Granny travelled back through the city centre to Henry Street where she was presented with a 80 foot scarf which was knitted by members of the Limerick Craft Hub.
After meeting newly-weds Lyndsey O’Rourke and Tom Brett near the Strand Hotel Granny then travelled to Shelbourne Park via Thomondgate, passing Thomond Park along the way.

Lisa Light - Light up Limericks Bridges
Leaving Cert student Katie Whelan set up a petition to Light up Limerick’s Bridges, Shannon, Sarsfield and Thomond bridges, with positive, uplifting messages to help people in difficult times that are suffering with depression or having suicidal thoughts, and is in memory of all those who have sadly taken their own life.
Katie set up the cause, ‘Lisa’s Light’, in memory of her cousin Lisa who tragically died 3 years ago by suicide. #LightUpLimericksBridges.

University Of Limerick - “The Living Bridge – An Droichead Beo” 90 second edit
“The Living Bridge – An Droichead Beo” is a unique design by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, London and consists of seven 50-metre spans linked together by piers which create four platforms of refuge for walkers.
The platforms are designed to accommodate social gatherings, informal teaching sessions, music and dance performances, as well as a wide array of educational, social and cultural activities – all contributing to this facility’s status as a “living” bridge”.
The bridge alternates between rhythms of bridge and island, with lightweight bridge structures joining to more solid pier locations. This is reflected by the change in construction materials from steel to concrete and the transition from open parapets to solid pillars and glazed side walls which serve to shelter the “inhabitants” of this animated facility.
The architects designed the bridge to move in a beautiful flowing line across the Shannon, mirroring the river. The design conveys the sense of a series of bridges leaping from pier to pier, each supported by one of the existing islands in the riverbed. This gives the traveller the sense that they are crossing the river on stepping stones.
From the south campus, access to the bridge is through what presents itself as a hidden gateway in the Millstream Courtyard and provides a vital link between the Glucksman Library, Concert Hall and Millstream developments to the Health Sciences and the new Irish World Academy of Music and Dance on the north bank. An impressive Plaza will welcome you to Clare once you have travelled over the bridge.
The Pedestrian Living Bridge project was resourced through a partnership of private and public funding and was assigned to Arup Consulting Engineers in Dublin. Kerin Contract Management in Limerick managed the project while building work was undertaken by Eiffel Construction, France’s largest bridge builder.

THOMOND SWIM 2019 RESULTS :
We are now into 12th annual Thomond Swim. Each year the numbers continue to grow as does open water participation. This year we didn’t have the hot weather but over 91 swimmers took to the 14.5 degree water and swam through our historic city. A big thank you as always to Limerick Marine Seach & Rescue for the boat cover along with the support of Limerick Kayak Club. The Civil Defence provided the welcome shower & finishing tents. Again we had the support of St Michaels Boat Club for the event we are very grateful for their support each year in opening up their club to the swimmers.
We remember our former Coach John Dempsey RIP today who now doubt is now analyzing those results with some of the former great coaches who have gone before us. John was instrumental in driving the revival of the Thomond Swim having swam many times in the original and then took on the challenge of the new route so many years later.
We had plenty of food to recharge the batteries afterwards at Shannon Boat Club, with it’s stunning vista of the route.
The Thomond Swim covers a distance of 1800m and is a qualifier for the Liffey and Harbour Swims in Dublin. It is a handicapped start and is open to wetsuit and non wetsuit competitors.
Spectators are encouraged to come and support the swimmers with the best vantage points along Clancy Strand, O’Callaghan Strand, Sarsfield bridge and Howley’s quay.
Through the sponsorship of Shannon Group and safety support of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue, swimmers of all ages from 16 upwards complete for first, second and third place non wetsuit male and female prizes, first wetsuit male and female and fastest overall male and female swimmers.

Royal De Luxe Limerick Giant - Following months of preparations and planning, the 85-year-old grandmother finally arrived by rail at the Bus Eireann school bus depot shortly after 10am where several thousand people had gathered to see her arrival.
