Adeyto ????️inside SHIRAKAWAGO MYOZENJI TEMPLE MUSEUM Traditional Roof Gassho Architecture
Finally we get to enter one of these amazing houses with huge thatched roof! MYOZENJI TEMPLE MUSEUM is the tallest building of Shirakawago with lovely views of rice fields and houses and the mountains in the distance! It is a museum where you pay less than $3 to enter and even receive for free e photo of yourself holding the SARUBOBO (red human-shaped dolls, with no facial features but apparently a monkey as a charm for good marriage, good children and to ensure a well-rounded couple.)
The monk’s residence, bell tower gate, and main hall were constructed in around 1800 following the temple’s establishment in 1748.
The monk’s residence (or “kuri”) provided housing and kitchen facilities for monks living at the temple. The interior currently serves as an exhibition space displaying everyday items from the past. The bell tower gate (or “shoromon”) features a thatched roof, below which hangs the temple bell (or “bonsho”). The original bell was requisitioned for its metal during WWII, and the current bell was cast following the war. The main hall enshrines an image of Buddha.

DYA717 Feb 22, 2017 More Gero BURA BURA
DYA717 Feb 22, 2017 -- I got up early to try out the Botan bath which is on the North-west side of the hotel. This one had a rotenburo (outdoors bath). Very nice but also was very cold since you walking outside in your natural skin to the heated outside pool! Yahoo said it was 19-degrees F. Breakfast was at 6:50 a.m. at the Tokiwa Restaurant and I was #2 in line. Was a typical great Japanese and Western combo buffet. Hurray! I got my first NATTO of this trip! ONO! Large dining room so it was great. I got a window seat overlooking a nice pond looking through a small bamboo forest. A little bit more BURA-BURA around this huge hotel complex. They opened up a morning market selling in the walkway outside the restaurant -- all kinds of packaged food things and other souvenir items. Then BURA-BURA around town in this cold approx. 20-degrees but no wind and start looking for a shortcut to the train station. Found it and I’ll use it when it’s time to leave here. I wandered around some back streets, saw the Sarubobo Shrine and golden footbath. Sarubobo means monkey (saru) baby (bobo in Hida dialect). Some kind of faceless good luck charm. Ran into the Mori Minashi Hachiman Shrine. Then it was refreshment time. Looked around for anything open and found the Nishio Café across the train station. No English menu but I pointed at a picture that looked familiar and I got yakisoba and a beer! Great guess! Then more BURA-BURA. Found a way down to the riverbanks, checked out the natural riverside onsen (no skinny dipping – gotta wear swim wear). So far I only saw people using it as a footbath. Went back to the hotel and rested and I called it day. No dinner for me – too full so I just munched on musubi and okazu snacks. So, today I walked a lot but didn’t find anymore unique things to show y’all.
JAPAN GERO STATION TO Gero Onsen Gassho Village
Gero Onsen Gassho Village comprises 10 thatched A-frame long-houses from the UNESCO World Heritage site of nearby Shirakawa-go that have been re-assembled on the hill top site just outside Gero.
Some of the buildings were thus saved from destruction when a new dam in the Shirakawa-go area would have flooded them.
Of the 10 historic buildings the large Historic Odo House (kyu Odo-ke) is registered as an Important Cultural Property and shows how life was lived in a typical Gassho-style house using mannequins and models. On display are original agricultural tools and machinery used in silk production.
Another Gassho house, now named the Shirasagi Theater, has been converted into a theater and puts on a variety of different performances during the year. The Iwasaki House holds a collection of folk crafts.
The Enkukan has a collection of carved statues of the Buddha made in the style of the Japanese monk and sculptor Enku (1632-1695).
On the hill overlooking the Gassho Mura is the Saijiki-no-mori, known for its cherry trees and autumn leaves in season. Banko-an is another historic house here along with a water wheel and mill, a frog shrine and a 175m children's slide.
Scattered over the site are a number of onsen foot baths (ashi-no-yu) and a hand bath (te-no-yu).
