中世の岩城氏の解説（Explanation of Medieval Iwaki family lord) 鎌倉時代（西暦１３世紀以降）の岩城領の惣領は初代高久三郎忠衡の子、忠清の系譜である。源頼朝の奥羽征伐に参戦し岩城領の地位をさらに確固としている。鎌倉時代以降、奥州には他国のような守護は置かれなかった。磐城領の守護の伊賀氏、後の神官の飯野氏などの幕府有力者の荘園への文書もあることから特に南奥は主領地に分割された。１４世紀後半の岩城惣領は周防守となっているが、１４世紀初期の摂津守で磐城領の守護の岩城次郎入道願真は鎌倉幕府の有力者であったことから岩城惣領は入道願真の系譜と思われる。一般に１６世紀初期の岩城常隆が南奥と東関東の権力を得ていた時代を最盛期とする説はあくまでも１４世紀以降の流れだったのかもしれない。古河公方（現在の茨城県南西の古河市に居住より通称）、足利政氏と嫡子の高基との不和を調停した岩城氏であったが、その後に不和が再燃し政氏より出陣要請を受けた宇都宮忠綱との合戦には白河氏が岩城常隆、由隆親子のもとに参陣している。宇都宮忠綱が政氏の後継として高基を望んでいたことが要因であったが、後にそのような争乱が宇都宮氏の没落に繋がる要因にもなっている。さらに以降、小田、宇都宮両氏が那須山田城の合戦に岩城氏に参陣するなど、確かに最盛期といっても過言ではないかもしれない。１６世紀以降、南奥の伊達氏、蘆名氏、南部の佐竹氏を圧迫していたが、１６世紀後期の岩城親隆、常隆は常陸太田の岩城領を再三攻め立てる佐竹氏、南奥の相馬氏が岩城氏の田村領攻略の時期に伊達政宗の攻撃にあい服属し同盟を解消するなど決して有利とはいえない状況になっていた。しかし伊達氏と佐竹氏の講和を実現するなど、伊達氏、佐竹氏との同盟関係を強固にしていった。戦国時代末期に豊臣秀吉の小田原城攻めの要請が常隆のもとに届きやがて戦国時代は終焉を迎える。
