The Chittorgarh fort is the biggest fort in India. It is a fort with an entire city living within it. The current population living within the fort is around 10 thousand but in the good old days there was a settlement of about 100thousand people within the fort. So now you can imagine how huge the fort is. You will have to hire a vehicle to look around the fort. Chittor is about 100 kms from Udaipur and take about 2 hours to reach.
This was the capital of Mewar. The fort has been there since the medieval times and seen a lot of assaults and attacks – this fort is called the pride of Mewar. There were 3 major attacks that the fort has seen – first one was by Allaudin Khilji that came for Rani Padmini, next big attack was from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat and the last big attack was by Akbar. The fort shows the signs of all these attacks and the bravery of the people who fought it. The fort is situated on a hill. There were about 70+ water bodies within the fort to catch rain water – but currently you can find 20 odd water bodies only. Similarly there were about 100+ temples within the complex but now you will find a few left – the temples that you will find here will be both Jain and Hindu temples. The Jain temples there are Digamber as well as Shewtambar temples. But unfortunately most of the temples are destroyed by the invaders. The carvings have been damaged. There has been a lot of restoration that has been carried out which tells you the tale of the rough era gone by for the fort.
There are few important points that you can visit when you are here
1. Meera – Kumbha Temple
This temple was originally dedicated to Varaha but after it was destroyed in one of the attacks it was restored by Maharana Kumbha. There are two small shrines besides the main temple – one is the Meera bai temple, where Meerabai prayed to lord Krishna and the other one is the temple of Meera Bai’s guru. In front of the main temple there is a Garuda pillar, which is an indication that it is a Varaha temple.
2. Sat bis deori
These are the Shewtambar Jain temple complex with 27 temples within the complex there are 5 big temple and several other smaller tombs. All the temples have great detailed carvings.
3. Vijay Stambh
A nine storey tower was built to commemorated victory. When we went to Chittor. The tower was closed for renovation but you climb the tower in regular tourist days.
4. Gaumukh lake
A small artificial lake has beenated as a holy lake within fort it is a five sided lake hence the name Gaumukh. Here you can pray as well as feed the fishes.
5. Kirti Stambh
A seven storey tower adjacent to Digamber Jain temple. This tower is similar to the Vijay stambh, but it is older and has religious carving it. Like the Jain Tirthankars and temple goddesses. Unlike Vijay Stamb you cannot climb this tower.
6. Rana Kumbha Palace
This is one of biggest structures of the fort. This palace is reminiscent of the older golden era. But also shows the prominent signs of war.
7. Padmini Palace
This is the famed palace of Rani Padmini. It has a small Jal Mahal (Lake Palace) as well. To know more about the story of Rani Padmini and the palace please click on the i-icon or the description box.
8. Kalika Mata temple
Another shrine of the mother goddess, which was a sun temple but after restoration and the destruction of the deity the mother goddess deity was installed.
9. Fateh Prakash Palace
This a palace converted to a museum.
