Nature and Life - Episode 169 (Satchari National Park)
Bangladesh is a stunningly beautiful country.
Numerous hills, forests and wetlands have enriched the ecosystems of this country.
Bangladesh is renowned throughout the world for its lushness.
It is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna.
A number of National Parks have been established here to nurture this lushness.
Among those Satchari National Park, sited in north-eastern region, is remarkable.
Satchari National Park is in the Chunarughat upazila of Hobigonj District, about 130 km. far from capital Dhaka.
It’s a small forest of hilly ecosystem.
Despite smaller size it is rich with biodiversity.
Both evergreen and mixed-evergreen forests can be found here.
Large trees, sweet bird songs, various hills and colorful wild flowers are common scenario in here.
Satchari National Park is the only forest of our country that contains fossils.
These fossils spread sporadically throughout the Park.
A number of trails are there in the Satchari National Park.
Most of these trails have been emerged out of dried water flow.
These trails are very effective for moving within dense forest.
A number of streams are flowing throughout the Park.
These streams remain dry in most of the time of the year.
Glittering sands can be seen in those dry streams.
As if they are offering white carpet invitation to the forest.
But these streams become fully flowing in monsoon.
The whole Park becomes misty, creating diversity in plants.
The whole forest becomes full of herbs, shrubs, climbers etc.
Bushes become colorful with wild flowers.
It’s like a festival of color in the green Park.
Satchari gets a new outfit with diversified orchids and cactuses.
Sufficiency of food makes this forest an ideal home to wildlife.
Various epiphytic plants can be seen in the Park.
They climb trees in a spiral way.
Various species of weeds live under the shelter of large trees.
Those host trees have been preserving the uniqueness of the Park for ages.
Fig, Telsur, White Siris, Banyan, Chikrasi, and Chapalish are remarkable among large trees of this Park.
Clusters of Bamboo can be seen in this park.
For such diversified flora, a large kingdom of animal has developed in the Satchari National Park.
Satchari remain awake with humming tunes of various insects.
Numerous colorful butterflies roam on flowers.
Spiders are also there.
Spiders are expert in building wonderful webs.
They efficiently hunt their prey.
Satchari is a safe home to diversified species of amphibians.
Here various Frogs can be seen in clear stream water and rare Tree Frogs can be seen on trees.
These Frogs are vital part of local ecosystem.
Various species of reptiles can also be seen in Satchari.
Skink, Tokay Gecko, Monitor Lizard, and other Lizards are commonly available.
This forest is also home to various venomous and non-venomous snakes.
Besides, the ecosystem of this Park is full of various species of birds.
Red Junglefowl can be seen in bushes of this forest.
Calls of Myna, Parakeet, Dove, White-rumped Shama and other birds keep the Park sonorous.
Various species of Mammals have enriched this Park.
Movement of Wild Pigs, Civet etc. mammals keep the Park alive.
Monkeys and Langurs can be seen roaming on large and medium trees.
Endangered Bengal Slow Loris and Critically endangered Hoolock Gibbon are also available in here.
With such diversified flora and fauna Satchari National Park has been preserving much of the natural heritage of this country.
But presently commercial cultivation of Lemon and Palm within the Park and illegal occupation in some instances are hampering the natural balance of the Park.
Moreover, the road inside the Park is hampering the usual movement of wildlife.
Loud noise of vehicles is upsetting the natural lifestyle of wildlife.
Tourists’ movements and irresponsible attitude are often creating extra pressure for the Park.
Suck actions harm both wildlife and ecosystem.
Peoples’ cooperation and responsible attitude are necessary to preserve the beauty of this unique evergreen forest.
Besides, sustainable management plan and effective initiatives need to be taken to conserve the wildlife of this Park.
Only then this park will survive with its natural beauty.
