VIRUDHUNAGAR:The death toll in the flash flood at Sathuragiri Hills increased to eight as two more bodies were recovered here on Tuesday.
Official sources said four teams comprising officials from the Forest Department and the Fire and Rescue Services carried out a search in the Sathuragiri Hills near Srivilliputhur in the morning, as three people were reported missing.
The teams searched from Thaaniparai to Pilavadiyar Karuppusamy Temple in the hills.

Sathuragiri Hills or Chathuragiri otherwise known as ' SUNDARA MAHALINGAM ' is situated 10 km from Watrap (Vathirairuppu) near Srivilliputhur. The name Sathuragiri came from Chathur (4) Veda (Vedas) Giri (Hill), where all the four Vedas met and formed the hill. Another meaning is that the whole mountain is in square (Chathuram) in shape so the name Chathuragiri. Sathuragiri is the Abode of God. It is otherwise also called as Mahalingam Hill.This is a mysterious hill where it is believed that siddhars still worship the lord Shiva.This was on the way back from the temple.

Sathuragiri hills:
Sathuragiri is the Abode of God and is also the abode of thousands of Siddhas including Agastiyar, Gorakkar, Satta Muni, Roma Devarand Sundranandar. It is believed that the Siddhas still worship Lord Shiva from Sathuragiri. So the hills are also known as Sivan Malai.
The divine place Sathuragiri is surrounded by four hills, hence its name Sathuragiri or Chathuragiri. It is said that the name Sathuragiri is derived from the Sanskrit word Chathur meaning FOUR (4) (there are 4 Vedas and each one is represented by a hill) and the second part of the name, Giri meaning Hill. So it can be literally taken as a place where all four Vedas meet and merge into one. This is mentioned in Siva Puranam. The name also carries another meaning where the hills surrounding the place are in the shape of a Chathuram (Tamil for square) so the name Sathuragiri. It is also called Mahalingagiri, Menugiri/Merugiri, Kailasagiri, Indiragiri, Sarvalogagiri, Suriyagiri, Brahmagiri, Siddhagiri, Yamagiri/Yemagiri, Sivagiri, Sakthigiri, Udayagiri, Sanjivigiri/Sathuragiri.
On the way to Sathuragiri (after foothills till Sundara Mahalingam):
1. Two sanctums of Sivalingams inside two separate caves at Kora Kunda (Gorakkar Cave)
2. Two Lingams in a single sanctum called Irattai Lingam or Sankaran Narayan Lingams
3. Vana Durgai Amma
4. Pilavadi Karuppasamy
Pilavadi Karuppasamy & Kali, are the guardian angels/gods of the Sathuragiri Hills. Vana Durgai Amma is the guardian of Sundaramahalingam temple. They safe guard the area from evil forces. The pradistai of these three guardian angels/gods were done by the Siddhas of Sathuragiri hill.
Sathuragiri plays host to three temples: They are Sundara Mahalingam temple, Santhana Mahalingam temple and Anandavalli Amma temple.
Sundara Mahalingam Temple:
1. Sundara Murthy Swamigal Sanctum at the entrance of the temple.
2. Lord Sundara Mahalingam Temple (100 metres from Sundara Murthy Swamigal Sanctum)
Santhana Mahalingam Temple:
1. At Santhana Mahalingam Temple, separate sanctums for 18 Siddhars, Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga, Navagrahas, Santhana Mahadevi (Sakthi), and Santhana Mahalingam (Sivam) are available. Satta Muni Cave can also be found nearby.
Anandavalli Amma temple:
1. Anandavalli Amma's temple mandapam can be found behind Sundara Mahalingam temple. Anandavalli Amma is formless. Only during Navarathiri she takes a form.
Puja Timings:
At Sundara Mahalingam temple the daily pooja starts by 6 'o' clock in the morning. At Santhana MahalingamTemple the daily pooja starts by 3 'o' clock in the morning. The two jama poojas are performed before sunrise. At both the temples Ardha Jama Poojas are finished before 18.00 hrs and closed. On full moon and new moon days, the puja schedule changes according to the visit of pilgrims.
From Sundara Mahalingam to the top of the hill (inside the forest):
1. Vana Durga, 2. Oonjal Karuppan Swamy, 3. Korakkar Scripture Rock, 4. Vellai Ganapathi (White colored Lord Ganesha), 5. Nadu Kattu Ganapathi, 6. Naga Kanni Kavu, 7. Lord Ganesa at Thavasi Cave, 8. Periya Mahalingam.
Festivals:
The new moon day in Aadi month (July-August), Purattasi Navarathri in September-October, Shivarathri in February-March,, Thai Amavasya- new moon day in January-February, Margazhi pujas in December-January and all new moon and full moon days in the year are festival days in the temple.
How to reach:
Pilgrims coming from pondicherry (or) Chennai direction has to come to Madurai and get down at Krishnan Koil Bus Stop on the way to Srivilliputhur then go to Watrap (Vatthirairuppu). From Watrap have to go to Thaanipaarai, the base of the hill. Buses are available even from Srivilliputhur itself to Watrap and Thaniparai. Pilgrims travelling from South have to pass through Nagercoil -- Tirunelveli -- Rajapalayam -- Srivilliputhur -- Watrap -- Thaniparai. Couple of passenger mini buses are available in the morning and evening. Auto Rickshaws are available 24/7. They charge between Rs. 60-80. From Thaanipaarai pilgrims will have to walk their way up to Sathuragiri hills. Normally first timers take 6 to 8 hours to reach the top and experienced climbers can reach the top within 4 to 5 hours

மதுரை மாட்டுத்தாவணி பஸ்ஸ்டாண்டில் இருந்து வத்திராயிருப்பு செல்லும் பஸ்களில் சென்றால், தாணிப்பாறை விலக்கில் இறங்கலாம். இங்கிருந்து 7 கி.மீ., தூரம் சென்றால் சதுரகிரி மலை அடிவாரமான தாணிப்பாறை வரும். அங்கிருந்து மலை ஏறி, 10 கி.மீ., நடந்தால் மகாலிங்கத்தை தரிசிக்கலாம்.
வத்திராயிருப்பு பகுதியில் மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைத்தொடரில் அமைந்துள்ள புராதன சிவன் கோயில். தமிழ் வருடம் ஆடி அமாவாசை அன்று ஏராளமான பக்தர்கள் கூடி விரதமிருந்து சுந்தரமகாலிங்கம், சந்தனமகாலிங்கம் கோயில்களில் சிறப்பு வழிபாடு செய்வர்.
நாலாபுறமும் மலை சூழ்ந்துள்ளதால் சதுரகிரி என்ற இன்னொரு பெயரும் உண்டு. சதுர் (நான்கு) வேதங்கள் இங்கு சந்தித்து கிரி (மலை) உருவாகியதால் சதுரகிரி எனப் பெயர் வந்ததாக சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
ஒட்டு மொத்த மலைகளின் அமைப்பு, சதுர வடிவில் இருப்பதால் இப்பெயர் என்றும் ஒரு கூற்று. சுந்தரமகாலிங்கம் சன்னதியில் மஹாலிங்கம் சாய்ந்த நிலையில் உள்ளது இக்கோயிலின் சிறப்பு.
இம்மலையில் ஏராளமான மருத்துவ மூலிகைகள் உள்ளதால் இதன் அருமைகளை உணர்ந்த பல சித்தர்கள் இங்கு தங்கி, தீராத நோயுள்ள மக்களுக்கு சித்த மருத்துவம் செய்து அருளியதாக வரலாறு உள்ளது. மிகுந்த திகைப்பூட்டும் இந்த மலைகளில், இன்னமும்கூட சித்தர்கள் சிவபெருமானை வணங்கிவருவதாக நம்பப்படுகிறது.

சதுரகிரி சுந்தரமகாலிங்கம் திருக்கோயில் மலையில் வாழும் பளியர் இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் வழிபட்டு வந்த இந்தக் கோயில் திருமலை நாயக்கர் ஆட்சிகாலத்தில் சாப்டூர் பாளையக்காரராக இருந்த ராஜகம்பளம் சமுதாயத்தை சேர்ந்த ராமசாமி காட்டைய நாயக்கர் என்பவரால் கட்டப்பட்டது. 1940 ஆம் ஆண்டு வரை இக்கோவில் சாப்டூர் பாளையக்காரர் பராமரிப்பில் இருந்து வந்தது. இம்மலை பகுதி 1950 ஆம் ஆண்டுக்குப் பிறகு வனத்துறை கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருந்து வருகிறது.
