Sati Anusuya ashram is in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, located further upstreams the Mandakini River, 16 km from the town, set amidst thick forests that round to the melody of birdsong all day. It was here that sage Atri, his wife Anusuya and their three sons (who were three incarnations of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva), lived and are said to have meditated.

Valmiki describes in the Ramayana that at one time there was no rain in Chitrakuta for ten years. There was a severe famine and nothing was left to eat or drink for animals and birds. Sati Anusuya performed hard and intensive austerities and got the river Mandakini down on earth. This led to the greenery and forests to grow which removed the sufferings of all sages and the animals.

Sati Anusuya ashrama, at present is a very peaceful place where various streams from the hills converge and form the Mandakini River. It is said that Rama along with Sita had visited this place to meet Maharishi Atri and Sati Anusuya. It is here Sati Anusuya explained to Sita, the grandeur and importance of satitva. The dense forests of Dandaka start from this place. It was ruled by Ravana. Ravana had appointed strong rakshasas like Khara and Viradha as its rulers. The place was infected by the terror of rakshasas.

यह आश्रम ऋषि अत्रि के विश्राम स्थान के रूप में जाना जाता है। अत्रि ने अपनी पत्नी अनुसूया के साथ यहाँ ध्यान किया। कथा के अनुसार वनवास के दौरान भगवान राम और माता सीता इस आश्रम में सती अनुसूया से मिले थे। सती अनसूया इस समय माँ सीता को पढ़ाया करती थीं। यहाँ रथ पर पीछे सवार अर्जुन के साथ भगवान कृष्ण की एक बड़ी मूर्ति है जो महाभारत दृश्य को दर्शाती है। इसके अंदर दिलचस्प कलाकृतियों वाली कई मूर्तियाँ हैं, जिन्हें पवित्र दर्शन के लिए रखा है।

अनसूया प्रजापति कर्दम और देवहूति की 9 कन्याया में से एक तथा अत्रि मुनि की पत्नी थीं। उनकी पति-भक्ति अर्थात सतीत्व का तेज इतना अधिक था के उसके कारण आकाशमार्ग से जाते देवों को उसके प्रताप का अनुभव होता था। इसी कारण उन्हें 'सती अनसूया' भी कहा जाता है।

अनसूया ने राम, सीता और लक्ष्मण का अपने आश्रम में स्वागत किया था। उन्होंने सीता को उपदेश दिया था और उन्हें अखंड सौंदर्य की एक ओषधि भी दी थी। सतियों में उनकी गणना सबसे पहले होती है। कालिदास के 'शाकुंतलम्' में अनसूया नाम की शकुंतला की एक सखी भी कही गई है।

    Sati Anusuya's temple is one among the Charo Dham ( Four pilgrim places) of Chitrakoot. The temple and Ashram is situated in the lush green forests of Chitrakoot abound by high hills. The location in itself is very spiritual and has been more purified by one of the greatest sages of India Atri Muni and his famous sati (chaste and dedicated) wife Anusuya before whose name 'Sati' is compulsorily prefixed. She has been an ideal for Indian woman. Even Goddess Sita sought her blessings and teachings during the exile. River Mandakini originates here and multiplies the scenic beauty. About the origin of the river  Goswami Tulsidas writes in the Ramcharit Manas. (River Mandakini is well praised by holy scriptures and it was brought on the earth by the dear wife of sage Atri). There is also a very grand temple of sati Anusuya with glimpses of her life. At a short distance one can see the old temple, very small in size of Sati Anusuya and her son Dattatreya. I was shocked to see that people were polluting the river at its very origin.

It is located with a green mountain on one side and river Mandakini on the other side . Lot of devotees flock to pay the visit to Maa Sati Anusuya . Even Goddess Lakshmi in human form ,Sita Maa learns satitva from her. Now this place has huge concrete ashram showing lot of incidents and legends associated with the life of Maha Sati Anusuya Rishi Atri inside . .This ashram and place is worth watching.

The town of Chitrakoot is notable for its profound inheritance and the Sati Anusuya Ashram is an epitome of that heritage. The Sati Anusuya Ashram is situated at a separation of around 16 km from the town of Chitrakoot. It denotes where they lived and pondered. It is set in the midst of thick timberlands. The environment of the ashram is serene and the main sounds that can be heard are the sweet murmuring of the fowls and the swells of the little streams that join the Mandakini River. History of Sati Anusuya

Best time to visit

Sati Anusuya ashram is seen at about 4 km from Sphatik Shila in Chitrakoot. It was famous gurukul (residential school) of maharishi Athri. His wife Anusuya was recognised as Sati and Mahasati. She is one among the seven Mahasatis coming in Hindu ancient scripts. It was and is an Ashram of sage Athri. Since his spouse was successful in coming out of ticklish test of trinity gods she was named as Mahasati. Since then it was recognised as Anasuya Ashram or Anasuya temple in Chitrakoot from the time of Threthayug. 

कर्वी मंदाकिनी नदी के किनारे पर बसा भारत के सबसे प्राचीन तीर्थस्थलों में एक है। उत्तर प्रदेश और मध्य प्रदेश में 38.2 वर्ग किलोमीटर के क्षेत्र में फैला शांत और सुन्दर चित्रकूट प्रकृति और ईश्वर की अनुपम देन है। चारों ओर से विन्ध्य पर्वत श्रृंखलाओं और वनों से घिरे चित्रकूट को अनेक आश्चर्यो की पहाड़ी कहा जाता है। मंदाकिनी नदी के किनार बने अनेक घाट और मंदिर में पूरे साल श्रद्धालुओं का आना-जाना लगा रहता है। माना जाता है कि भगवान राम ने सीताऔर लक्ष्मण के साथ अपने वनवास के चौदह वर्षो में ग्यारह वर्ष चित्रकूट में ही बिताए थे। इसी स्थान पर ऋषि अत्रि और सती अनसुइया ने ध्यान लगाया था। ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेशने चित्रकूट में ही सती अनसुइया के घर जन्म लिया था।
