Sattal is an interconnected group of seven freshwater lakes situated in the Lower Himalayan Range near Bhimtal, a town of the Nainital district in Uttarakhand, India. During the British Raj, the area had a tea plantation, one of four in the Kumaon area at that time.
The lakes sit at an altitude of 1370 metres in the Mehragaon valley.
Set amongst dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is one of the few unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in India. These lakes are a paradise for migratory birds. It is home to a few camps being operated mostly by local people catering to tourists looking for outdoor vacations

Sattal (Seven Lakes), Uttarakhand - Video log of the trek
Sattal is a cluster of 7 lakes at varying altitudes near Dharali. The only way to reach them is to climb up the mountain on your feet. No motor-able roads here. Some of the lakes have dried up due to changing weather patterns, deforestation or maybe due to human activities. The ones which survive are beautiful beyond words. Maybe the difficult access has kept them safe.
There are several local legends tied to them and the areas surrounding them. Taking a guide along is a good idea - to not be lost in the woods and also to know more about these legends.
Untouched and pristine, the water in these lakes is pure and contamination free. We filled up our bottles here and it's hard to forget the taste of that sweet water even now!

Sattal - Things to Do (With Price details) | Nainital |
Surrounded by lush green jungle, Sattal is a group of seven lakes interconnected to each other.
The lakes sit at an altitude of 1370 metres below lush orchards in the Mehragaon valley.
Set amongst dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is one of the few unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in India. These lakes are a paradise for migratory birds. It is home to a few camps being operated mostly by local people catering to tourists looking for outdoor vacations.
Sattal is situated in the Lower Himalayan Range and is the result of tectonic activities and the uplifting of sediments between the Tibetan plain and the Indo-Gangetic plains. The rocks are mainly sedimentary rocks and quartzite. Physiographically the area can be divided into lower Himalayas and terraces.
Sattal is an ecologically fragile mesotrophic group of lakes and under the impact of heavy environmental degradation. Extensive deforestation, dumping of non-biodegradable waste, uncontrolled urbanization of the catchments and nearby forest is harming the ecology of the area. This results in scanty rainfall, a decrease in the number of plant and animal species and rapid drying up of perennial springs. The lakes also suffer from a reduced oxygen content and high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Poaching has eliminated many wild animals. Khudariya Tal became Sukha Tal (Dry Lake) due the leakage of water from its western extremity. An extensive growth of invasive plants such as Lantana, Parthenium and Eichhornia is also endangering the ecological survival of the lakes.
Sattal has many different varieties of fish. Mahseers (Tor tor and Tor putitora) are found here in large numbers. Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Schizothorax richardsonii and Catla catla are some of the other fish found in the lakes.
Some of the butterflies found at Sattal includes Indian fritillary (Argynnis hyperbius), peacock panzy, blue peacock, Paris peacock, red-base Jazebel, red lacewing, yellow pansy, tawny Rajah, red Helen, large silverstripe and thousands of others.
There is a natural spring of fresh water arising out of dense oak forest west of Sattal.

About YMCA Camp:-
This place is near the lake side
I must say its a pleasant and comfortable space for family and Kids and found very comfortable with all the essentials required like enough charging points, very clean washrooms, spacious Safari tents and beautiful huts
Friendly staffs, located in the tranquility and the lap of nature, YMCA Sattal should be best choice for stay in Sattal. We had an amazing time there. We stayed in a safari tent. It had all the amenities like hot running water, towels, room heater, extra beds, blankets etc. Sattal is a natural paradise and this property allows you experience its unique nature is the best way. The safari tents in the camp gives you the feel of a forest. In the morning you can spot so many birds, in and around the camp. The food is basic, hygienic and very tasty. There's a cricket ground, basketball court, volleyball court, within the area of camp. Popular destinations like the main Sattal lake, Subash Dhara waterfall, Christian Ashram and the birdwatching point are very near to the camp. I went their and enjoyed a lot.

Nainital uttarakhand || Uttarakhand || India || Neekharas Video || sattal lake
One of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Uttarakhand, Nainital, which is nestled amidst the Kumaon Hills, is a quaint hill station built around a uniquely shaped lake known as the 'Naini Lake' (thus contributing to its name Nainital). Also famously known as 'City of Lakes,' Nainital abounds in natural beauty, with its snow-capped hills and tranquil lakes lending it a nostalgic charm of its own.
