Mauritania confiscates a Shia mosque in Nouakchott, isolates Imam
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Mauritania confiscated the Imam Ali Mosque in the province of Dar al-Naim in the northern state of Nouakchott and told the Imam of the mosque in the compound of his removal from the imam and the teaching of another Imam to replace him.
A delegation from the ministry visited the compound during the weekend, to inspect it carefully, before the imam was informed of his impeachment and was given a week to leave his residence inside the compound.
The compound was established several years ago in Dar al-Naim district in Nouakchott, with the beginning of the announcement of some Mauritanians of their Shia beliefs, and the organization of ritualistic ceremonies, which is magnified by the Shias of Ahlulbait, peace be upon them, especially in the days of Ashura and the auspicious birth anniversary.
The Mauritanian authorities did not elaborate on the reasons behind the closure of the mosque and the school of the Imam Ali, peace be upon him, while the country is witnessing a remarkable increase in the number of followers of the doctrine of Shiism.

Nouakchott (/nwɑːkˈʃɒt/; French pronunciation: [nwakʃɔt]; Arabic: نواكشوط Nuwākshūṭ, originally derived from Berber Nawākšūṭ, place of the winds)[1] is the capital and largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahara.[2] The city also serves as the administrative and economic centre of Mauritania.
Nouakchott was a small village of little importance until 1958, when it was chosen as the capital of the nascent nation of Mauritania. It was designed and built to accommodate 15,000 people, but droughts and increasing desertification since the 1970s have displaced a vast number of Mauritanians who resettled in Nouakchott. This caused massive urban growth and overcrowding, with the city having an official population of just under a million as of 2013. The resettled population inhabited slum areas under poor conditions, but the living conditions of a portion of these inhabitants have since been ameliorated.

Mosque volunteers visit hospitalized Muslims
Studio copy of April 21, 2013 report for KSA2 - Saudi Arabian, English-language TV:
Intro: In America, the greater Washington DC area is not only the
country's capital, it is home to a growing number of immigrants from
various Muslim countries. But when Muslim immigrants get sick and have
to go to the hospital, they are often alone and without friends and
family to visit them. A local mosque has responded to this problem, by
bringing volunteers to visit hospitalized Muslim patients. More in
this report.

We need to conserve these manuscripts not only for Mauritanians, but for all people. What we still need to do here is make photocopies or scans of the manuscripts. Also, although this cupboard behind me was kindly donated we need wooden cupboards. Then manuscripts will be stored at lower temperatures which is better for them.

There is much work to be done. The buildings are made of stone and clay. When it rains, the clay slowly deteriorates, so we need to repair the walls frequently. The roof is made of palm leaves, which is very fragile and needs to be renewed regularly. We have books that are in a poor condition, termites being one of the reasons for their deterioration.

At Saif's library I saw his oldest Koran which is covered by Gazelle skin. It was in good condition, but it was the only old manuscript I saw in a good condition. The other manuscripts are in a poor condition. Some pages are in more or less a good condition, but the general condition of the manuscripts is very deteriorated.

We would like to partner up with a regional or international organisation which could assist both in a technical and financial capacity. We'd like to expand the microfilm project, and also to make quality copies of the manuscripts. With some assistance we'd be better placed to carry out our conservation work.
