SAUL JUNCTION - Ben Selfe - flotilla to Gloucester Docks
11th September 2014
BEN SELFE was a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers and also a boat safety examiner. His business was based at Saul Junction, where the Stroudwater Canal joins the Gloucester Sharpness Canal.
He produced the decorative ropework for the film The Golden Compass
His final wishes were for a flotilla of craft to travel to Gloucester, with his ashes to be carried on his boat Knot Krazy, followed by a service at the Mariners Church in the docks.
Boaters joining the procession made donations which were divided between The Cotswold Canals Trust and The RNLI.
The level of support for this celebration of his life was beyond any expectation, and a convoy of over 60 craft, including two privately owned lifeboats followed in escort.
Even with some boats breasted up in pairs, the waterborne procession stretched out for two miles by the time it reached Gloucester.
Customers at Sainsbury's gathered outside the store, and visitors to Gloucester Quays were treated to an unexpected sight as the convoy moved through Llanthony bridge into the main dock with horns and hooters sounding. The spontaneous applause from onlookers added to the event, whilst the water ballet of boats mooring up as quickly as possible in the dock was impressive.

A short video of Saul Junction at the canal bridge which is situated on Gloucester & Sharpness Canal running south from Gloucester Docks. I like the atmosphere at this location as sunsets can be quite dramatic. The local activity is usually ducks, geese and swans floating about looking for an easy meal. Longboats tied up for the night and a nice local café to stop at. People out for a stroll along the towpath. Well worth a visit if you're in the area walking or cycling.

Purton Hulks Graveyard
The Purton Hulks Graveyard is a number of abandoned boats and ships, deliberately beached beside the River Severn to reinforce the river banks. Most were beached in the 1950's and are now in a state of considerable decay. The site forms the largest ship graveyard in mainland Britain.

Just off Purton lies the wrecks of the The Arkendale H & the Wastdale H, upstream from the entrance to Sharpness Docks.
The Severn Railway Bridge took 4 years to build from 1875 and was completed in 1879. The Railway Bridge was 4,162 feet long and 70 feet above high water with 22 spans across the Severn.
On 25 October 1960, in very thick fog combined with a very strong tide, two barges - the Arkendale H and Wastdale H - which had both missed the Sharpness Dock entrance, collided with one of the columns of the bridge. Two spans of the cast iron bridge collapsed into the river. Parts of the structure hit the barges causing the fuel oil and petroleum they were carrying to explode and burst into flames.
The Western Region of British Railways planned to reconstruct the bridge but after further damage to the bridge in February 1961 (another span collapsed) The bridge was classed to be too expensive to repair.[
The mammoth demolition task started in 1967 and lasted until 1970 being managed by Nordman Construction. You can still see the peers between the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and the River Severn. You can also see foundations are only visible at low tide, as too the wrecks of the petrol barges seen here.
