Cherokee is a census-designated place (CDP) in Swain and Jackson counties in western North Carolina, United States, within the Qualla Boundary land trust. It is located in the Oconaluftee River Valley around the intersection of U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 441. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 2,138.

Chief Hicks Appointed To Wildlife Commission
An honor for the top member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. Principal Chief Michell Hicks is now a member of the North Carolina Wildlife Commission. He took the oath of the office in Asheville Tuesday morning. The governor appointed Chief Hicks because of his role in preserving our state's heritage and protecting our wildlife resources. Chief Hicks says he looks forward to this challenge.My interest growing up, my dad always took me hunting and fishing. Just to be able to have a voice for Western North Carolina is something that I am looking forward to, said Hicks.Chief Hicks also says he accepted the position so that he can try to make a difference for his people and for our state.
