Sawa I Lau Caves, Yasawa Islands, Fiji
A regular stop on the Blue Lagoon Cruise, the Sawa I Lau Caves are a fascinating and fun place to visit. The caverns are amazing, with tunnels heading off in all directions, above and below water. The Fijian crew love to hoot and howl to scare the tourists, and the light and dark make this video a bit confusing. The first cavern has natural light, but then swimmers go through a tiny hole in the wall to a series of caverns which are almost completely dark. Then back out through the small tunnel to the main first cavern.

Sawa I Lau Sea Cave Yasawa islands Fiji
Fiji, Yasawa Islands, Sawa I Lau Sea Cave, These tidal limestone caves are fed from the ocean. The water is crystal clear. Some more adventurous visitors climb an internal chimney and jump from the high natural platform. Others dive underwater and go through a tunnel to get to another chamber, that is the same size but pitch black. If you were one of the visitors that day, leave me a message.

The very heart of the Yasawas.
The majestic Sawailau Caves are one of the 'must-do' activities for travelers visiting Fiji's spectacular Blue Lagoon. The ancient limestone formations, carved by constant wave action are hidden within an attractive little island.
According to legend, a young Chief once hid with his betrothed in the cave after her family threatened to marry her off to a rival Chief. Every day he would swim into this secret haven with food for the girl until they eventually both escaped to an island together, where they lived happily forever. The sacred Sawailau Caves are also known as the resting place of the ten-headed ancient Fijian god, Ulutini.
A scenic boat trip up to the caves is worth doing for its own sake. Then there's the magical experience of the caves themselves - venture into the caves, guided by friendly Fijians to explore the secrets within. The first of the caverns is magnificent. Light filters through a hole in the ceiling, allowing visitors to look around in awe. Those up for more excitement can choose to enter a secondary, more secretive, cavern via an underwater tunnel.

Sawa-i-lau Caves | Turtle Airways, Fiji
The Sawa-i-lau caves are three limestone caves in a small island off of the island of Yasawa in the north of Fiji’s beautiful Yasawa island chain. Although open to the public, the location, and terrain around these caves make the use of a guide recommended.
To reach the caves, you must swim into them. At high tide, you must swim under a curtain of rock and through a tunnel into the first cave. At low tide, the curtain is is just a few inches out of the water. The first cave has two chambers. The first chamber has a deep pool, and high walls. Light spills into the chamber from above. The second chamber is the 20m long inner sanctum. It has a low ceiling. Once you have been to this cave, you have truly been to the heart of the Yasawas.
The second cave is known as Qara ni Bukete or the pregnancy cave. It is advisable to have a torch as the second and third cave can be very dark. The waters here are only a couple of degrees cooler then the Pacific. The water is clear, and there seems to be very little sea life in the caves (although the guide assures you there are some eels living in the waters of the cave).
The third cave is called Qara ni Kasivi or the spitting cave.
Turtle Airways offers day trips to the Sawa-i-lau caves. Along with your low flying scenic flight from your resort to the caves, you will also receive instruction and guidance from a local guide who will help you enjoy your experience in the cave system.
As made famous by Brokke Shields in the film “The Blue Lagoon”, The Sawa-ilau caves are something not to be missed while in Fiji. So no matter where you are staying on the Fiji Islands, contact Turtle Airways to book a day trip to this scenic location.
