Idaho Or Bust - Galena Pass Sawtooth Scenic Byway
Waking up at the foot of Galena Pass and knowing that the entire day you will be riding one of the most scenic roads in the country has a special way of making it a good day. Sawtooth Scenic Byway did not disappoint. As we ride up to the top of the pass Mrs.Stacey talks about her research on packing for such a trip from a ladies perspective. It's interesting just how different it is from my own.

This week, we spent time in our 47th state, Idaho in Boise, Twin Falls, and Meridian. There, we saw Shoshone Falls, hiked, watched some crazy BASE jumpers, visited our 46th state capitol, and Boise State University. Idaho was definitely a slower paced, natural wonder kind of state. It didn't have many people, but the ones we met were very friendly. Yesterday, we drove the Oregon Trail to State #48! Only Washington and Alaska to go before a cross country drive back to South Florida.

Idaho Or Bust ADV - Boise National Forest Ponderosa Pines Scenic Byway
This week Mrs.Stacey's audio finally gives up the ghost while we ride down on of the prettiest mountain valleys I have ever seen in my life. If you ever have the chance to go up and ride Pines Scenic Byway take that opportunity, you will not be disappointed. We also talk a bit about (errr or I talk about) our new tank bags that we bought for the trip. I got to the Wolfman Explorer Lite while Mrs.Stacey got the Enduro Tank Bag.

HIKING THE SAWTOOTH MOUNTAINS
I took the weekend to hang out in Stanley, Idaho and explore the Sawtooth Mountains with some friends. We ended up hiking into Elephants Perch from Redfish Lodge, camping on public land and enjoy the views of the jagged peaks. The Sawtooth Mountains have some of the most scenic views in all of Idaho. This is one of my top 10 hikes.

Our original goal for this weekend was 10,579' Dave's Peak, because Dave wanted to conquer it for obvious reasons (good enough excuse for me!). However, early snow in the southern Sawtooths diverted us away from that class4 climb. Leveraging beta from Splattski's daughter for Plan=B, we came up with a clever thru hike over the second most northern peak on the main Sawtooth crest, 9,820' McGown Twin (aka Mystery Peak). Located just 0.8 miles south of 9,860 McGown Peak, it offers spectacular views of many impressive Sawtooth north faces, and precipitously rises high above Sawtooth Valley to the east which strengthens the summit experience.
All eleven of us met and caravanned at 5:00am. Despite foregoing restaurants and eating breakfast at the trailhead, we still didn't begin trekking until 9:15am due the time required to shuttle cars from one trailhead to another in order to complete the thru hike. After we completed hiking in the dark twelve hours later, Brady/Jan/Jing/myself stayed overnight in a Stanley hotel, while remainder of the group suffered the long and dark drive back home.
Seven of the twelve hiked miles were on the Alpine Way Trail, while the remaining five miles were off trail and consists of a mixture of thick forest, shallow snow, frozen lakes, and some fun class3 boulder scrambling on the ~0.5 mile long western knife edge summit ridge. Crux of the climb was descending the cold northern side of the western 9,200+' saddle, which offered ~400 exhilarating vertical feet of steep snow and ice requiring ice axes that some of the group (me!) found fun and exciting, others not so much. The last four miles of the trip were guided by headlamp, which included a comical moment of Anthony falling off a log bridge into cold Stanley Creek (ROTFL...sorry Anthony).
I think the overall group consensus is the trip was a great success. Nine of us experienced the truly spectacular views from the final summit ascent (two people waited at the 9,200+' western saddle), and I hope the photos below do justice (although I forgot my camera lens filters on this trip...sigh). Much of the group had been preparing for months by training/exercising and researching/collecting appropriate gear, and Dave even flew in from another state to join us. That all paid off, and some people tell me they now have a deeper appreciation for hiking and the wilderness, both of which I'm passionate about (what was your first clue?).
