Discover the home of the saxophone in Taiwan
The saxophone has a history of over 160 years. It takes about a month, using over 300 parts, and machining brass and bronze, to build a saxophone. Houli is the home of the saxophone in Taiwan, and the island makes about one-third of the saxophones produced worldwide each year. Made In Taiwan goes global.
We used to build saxophones by hand. Now with the assistance of ITRI, we have started digitalizing the way we position the sound holes, their sizes and the thickness of their walls, setting a professional standard for the way saxophones are made around the world.

Why the saxophone is music to Taiwanese ears
LEADIN
Taiwan is known for its high-tech chips that power mobile phones and computers around the globe.
But now it's gained a reputation as one of the world's leading saxophone makers.
STORYLINE
They've been making saxophones here for almost sixty years.
The Lien Cheng Saxophone company, located in the Houli district of Taichung city, is a known industry leader.
The company was started in 1947 when Chang Lien-Cheng re-built a fire-damaged saxophone for a friend, giving him the idea to set up the company.
Now Lien Cheng is run by the third generation of the family.
Today, Houli is home to some 15 workshops, turning out up to 50,000 saxophones annually.
In the 80s, Taiwan made so many saxophones that it was estimated 1 out of 3 saxophones were made in the country.
But with cheap labour and low material costs, China is currently able to churn out far more and cheaper saxophones than Taiwan.
The only way for Taiwan's saxophone industry to survive is to improve quality and to compete with the top brands from France and Japan.
Nowadays, many of the Taiwanese saxophone makers are producing for western brands while the Lien Cheng Company is confident enough to go with its own brand: We have continued to improve our saxophones, in term of materials and continue to improve the quality of our products, says Chang Tsung-yao, President of the Lien Cheng Company.
Today, the company produces around 1,000 high-quality saxophones a year.
Wang Cai-rui is a co-owner of this company. She explains that saxophone players haven't always had such a good reputation in Taiwan:
In the past, people from this country viewed those who played a saxophone for a living as having a lowly professional. They just called it a pipe blower, which is not very highly regarded but these days people in Houli have a high regard for saxophone players.
Little wonder then that the annual jazz festival here is so popular.
The streets are filled with musicians, professionals and amateurs playing to their own tune.
A number of the musicians are now retired. Before that they worked in a funeral parlour.
It was only after they stopped working that they discovered their love of Jazz:
We used to work as members of a marching band performing at funerals. After we have retired, we like to play jazz together and join this kind of music festival for fun, says 69-year-old Lin Su-chin.
This is the 10th Jazz festival in Taichung: I love this music because it's the kind of music that anyone can play, says Wang Ri-De, a university student who plays with a group of his friends.
Krzysztof Urbanski is a Polish musician who won this year's Taichung Jazz Festival award for best saxophone player.
He says he has been using Taiwan-made P.Mauriat Saxophones and is impressed by their quality: To be honest, it's everything. It's so well done. I think every single saxophones have something. What's really important is that the quality of the products, it's the top of the tree. I think every single saxophone can play beautifully. I can make beautiful sound of it and that's what great.
Something this audience wouldn't disagree with.

Yuan Xiang 原鄉 by Chihchun Chi-sun Lee 李志純
For alto saxophone and piano, performed by Ryo Nakajima and I-An Chen at the 1st Asian Saxophone Congress on Dec. 16, 2016.
Brief Program Notes: Yuán Xiāng原鄉 (Hometown/homeland) for alto saxophone and wind ensemble (with piano reduction), is specifically tailored for the final round of 1st Asian Saxophone Congress International Competition. The composition was inspired by Taiwanese music (from hok-lo, hakka and aboriginal), the history of LC Sax, and the development of saxophone music in the west (jazz and classical, etc.) The title quotes the statement indicating the birth of LC Sax: “Houli—The home of Taiwanese saxophone”.
Detailed Program Notes:
Yuán Xiāng原鄉 (Hometown/homeland) is a composition that I was asked by the 1st Asian Saxophone Congress International Competition to specifically tailor for the final round of the Senior Division.
This piece emphasizes three important facts: Music from Taiwan (hok-lo, hakka, aboriginal, etc.), the significance of Taiwanese saxophone manufacturer Lien Cheng Chang (張連昌), and the development of saxophone music in the west. The beginning starts with a reference to the Taiwanese aboriginal music Pasi but but from Bunun Tribe (recognized through UNESCO World Heritage), a ritual polyphonic music that involves a build-up of seconds (in a sedate, chanting-like scenery) up to eight voices. In addition, the piece includes Gloria from the Paiwan Tribe, which was sung at the Taiwanese presidential inauguration of President Tsai Ing-wen, the first female president in the history of Taiwan in 2016. Hla'alua’s takiaru and Kanakanavu’s mikong (music from the rituals of the two most recent recognized Taiwanese aboriginal tribes in 2014) are also referred to in this piece. Moreover, Hok-lo’s chantefable (臺灣說唱), liam koa-a (唸歌仔) and song of persuasion勸世歌, as well as Hakka’s Eight Tones and mountain songs (sang’ge) (客家八音、客家山歌及勸世歌) are important elements.
For saxophone, one of the world renowned brands is LC Sax, which was researched and developed by Mr. Lien Cheng Chang in Houli, Taiwan. LC Chang formed a jazz band with friends as a saxophonist. He spent three years to build a saxophone part by part after it was destroyed by a fire. The process inspired him to become the LC Sax manufacturer. The title “Yuán Xiāng原鄉” comes from the statement: The Hometown of Taiwanese Saxophone: Houli (臺灣薩克斯風的原鄉—-后里)
The last influence is the development of saxophone music in the west, with its invention by Adolphe Sax in 1840, importance in classical concert music, marching and military band, and ultimately in the creation of jazz. Many composers wrote significant repertoires for this recent invention, such as Gershwin, Ravel, Bizet, etc. and including one of my mentors: William Albright.

A New Life for the Saxophones Industry in Taiwan
Musical instruments made in Taiwan are very competitive export-wise. Many companies do OEM work for international brands. They focus on boutique products of high quality in small batches to avoid competing with cheap products. In the past few years, a number of companies have created their own brands and worked hard to develop high-end products. With the help of ITRI's local industry innovation and transformation program, breathed new life into this traditional craft. TAITRA 外貿協會 / Taiwantrade 台灣經貿網

In 1940, the painter and amateur musician Chang Lien-cheng (grandfather) offered to try to repair a friend's European saxophone that had been destroyed in a house fire. Owing to Chang Lien-chen's painting technique, he was able to draw out all parts of the saxophone and spent three years to assemble the very first saxophone made in Taiwan, and locals started to manufacture all parts and created an industry chain. Hence, the local saxophone manufacturing industry has been dynamic ever since.
Chang started a saxophone manufacturing business in 1948. The sophistication of Chang's handmade saxophone has since won the recognition of international musical instrument companies and received ODM/OEM orders in the early times. In 2000, the grand childrens of Chang's continued to run saxophone business, and seek to promote their own brand name as TK MELODY Saxophone in inherenting the spirit and technique of their grandfather. Now, not only TK MELODY Saxophone is a leading icon of the saxophone industry, we have been devoted to designing and producing saxophone and serve best for our customers for more than six decades, but also we are the only Taiwan factory that have international sax player Kaori Kobayashi endorsed and her cooperation for product innovation and development.
At the same time, following its own branding strategy, Lien Chang Saxophone insists to offer best quality product and co-works with the Industrial Technology Research Institute to apply scientific methods and advanced technologies in production.
We sincerely hope one day, the TK MELODY saxophone will be famous all over in the future.

The Story of Taiwan's Industry Clusters (1 of 5)
Taiwan has a booming IT industry and is one of the world's major manufacturers. Though its area is only a little over 35,000 sq. km, Taiwan has over 70 industry ckusters. With their tight upstream and downstream structures and unrivalled efficiency and flexibility, there clusters are among the most competitive of their kind globally.
High-tech products are not the only flourishing industry in Taiwan. With continuous innovation, handcrafted goods and traditional industries that grew out of the country's local culture have also gained a competitive edge.
This film follows the stories of the growth of four unique industry clusters in Taiwan: the yacht industry in Kaohsiung City; the orchid industry in Chiayi and Tainan counties; the saxophone industry in Houli; and the machinery industry in Taichung. Each of these clusters has become internationally renowned, and as the film demonstrates, even though their industry structures have changed, they have managed to adapt and remain leaders in their fields.
