Highland Park Single Malt Scotch Whisky distilled in the Kirkwall Distillery Orkney Islands Scotland
Highland Park Single Malt Scotch Whisky distilled in the Kirkwall Distillery, Orkney Islands, Scotland. Highland Park Distillery is a single malt whisky distillery located in Kirkwall, the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands, situated north of mainland Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1788 by Magnus Eunson, a direct descendant of the Vikings, who set up an illicit still in a bothy at High Park, where the name Highland Park is derived, and became the site of today’s distillery. Uniquely, Highland Park uses 5 keystones in the production of its single malts: Aromatic Peat Hobbister Moor; Hand Turned Floor Maltings; Sherry Oak Casks; Cool Maturation; and Cask Harmonisation. The Highland Park range is extensive including: 10 Year Old; 12 Year Old; 18 Year Old; 25 Year Old; 30 Year Old; 40 Year Old; and 50 year old, the oldest and most prestigious release. Highland Park also produces special releases and limited editions in its Heroes range with whisky names recognising Orkney’s viking past such as: Magnus; Viking Tribe; Dragon Legend; Valkyrie; Valknut; Voyage of the Raven; Sigurd; Ragnvald; and Thorfinn. Highland Park connoisseurs will also be attracted to the Orcadian Vintage Series with editions dating from 1964 to 1976. This video is an introduction to Highland Park and features the unique production methods of Highland Park with stunning Orkney Island landscapes with a Celtic musical background, and a traditional Orcadian voice over.

Scapa Glansa Single Malt Scotch
This week the good news is that we are excited to try a new Scotch. The bad news, unfortunately, is that with the discovery of this new (to us) Scotch, we learned that we have to begrudgingly say goodbye to one of our all-time favorites. Through a series of unfortunate events, we have come to learn that the Scapa 16 year Scotch is no longer being produced at the distillery. This was quite a shock to both of us as it has long been one of our favorites. There is even a podcast from 2010 that you can listen to in the archives at AboutBeverages.com to prove it. So we will bid a fond adieu to this spirit, who ironically is now only with us in spirit, and memory of course. You may have a hunch by now that the scotch we are trying may be connected in some way to Scapa and if that is your guess, then you are correct. The beverage that we are trying today is the Scapa Glansa. Glansa is an Old Norse word that means “shining storm-laden skies” and this scotch is the first peated single malt expression from the Orkney island based distillery. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.

Scapa Flow
Scapa Flow is a body of water in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, United Kingdom, sheltered by the islands of Mainland, Graemsay, Burray, South Ronaldsay and Hoy. The Harbour Authority area of Scapa Flow in Orkney has been measured as part of a wider consultation in ballast water management in 2013, and it has been accurately calculated that Scapa Flow is 324.5 square kilometres in area and that this area contains just under 1 billion cubic metres of water. This statistic makes Scapa Flow the second largest natural harbour in the World after Sydney Harbour, Australia. Scapa Flow is one of Britain's most historic stretches of water - located within the Orkney Islands, off the northeast coast of Scotland. Its sheltered waters have been used by ships since prehistory and it has played an important role in travel, trade and conflict throughout the centuries - especially during both World Wars. It is currently a world famous diving location with the wrecks of the scuttled German Fleet offering unique diving challenges. Scapa Flow is also a major oil port and served the Flotta Oil Terminal and is a prime location of ship-to-ship transfers of crude oil product and liquefied natural gas. The world’s first ship to ship transfer of LNG took place in Scapa Flow in 2007.

Welcome from Orkney
A brief hello from the Kirbuster farmhouse on Orkney, the last un-restored example of a traditional ‘firehoose’ in Northern Europe. The house has a central hearth, complete with peat fire, and a stone neuk bed reminiscent of the Neolithic interiors that can be seen at sites such as Skara Brae, Orkney. Kirbuster was occupied up until the 1960s.

Scotland's Islands
Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland. Then we'll visit another of the Inner Hebrides, road-tripping across the Isle of Skye, where we'll explore Iron Age forts, peat fields, a venerable distillery, thatched crofter huts, and the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula. Finally, we'll sail to Orkney — more Nordic than Celtic — with its stony remnants of a thriving Iron Age civilization and evocative reminders of the 20th-century wartime harbor at Scapa Flow.
