The Scapa Flow diving experience.
A short movie showing some of the dive sites in Scapa Flow. The wrecks and gloomy lighting make for a both thrilling and beautiful diving experience.
After doing a drysuit and nitrox course in the beginning of the week I was trying out my new camera set up the rest of the week. Low light makes for a grainy movie and keeping the camera steady was a little bit more challenging in the dry suit.
But all in all I'm very satisfied with the footage and am curious to see how the next dive trip will pan out. So enjoy the film and don't be shy to post comments.

Scapa Flow: Diving the blockships
I shot this video in 2008 while diving the block ships at Scapa Flow. These wrecks where sunk by the British to block off entry points to Scapa Flow's deep water harbor. The idea was that this would protect the ships against enemy attack.
The wreck lies in about 20 msw and the visibility was excellent. These wrecks are only dive-able in slack water. Once the full power of the Atlantic ocean hits these wrecks the currants are terrific. The strongest currants I've ever dived in. And that's saying a lot!
Drifting through your decompression give's you a feeling of being Superman. Fly across the ocean floor at breakneck speeds. It's one of those' should have been there' kinda things!

Scapa Flow Dives: Köln & Brummer
Diving Scapa Flow 2010: Köln and Brummer
Thursday, June 17, 5th day of diving. Diving the light cruisers Köln and Brummer. Maximum depths appx. 34 metres.Relatively dark conditions but good visibility. Water temp. 10C. Bottom times appx. 50 min. Buddy Chris with John and Robin making a spectacular appearance at around the end.
Both the Köln and the Burmmer were scuttled on 21 June 1919 in Scapa Flow on decision of the German Fleet bent on denying a British takeover of their vessels. The Köln is a 5,531-ton and 155m-long Dresden-class cruiser and now lies at a maximum depth of 34m, relatively intact. Launched in December 1915, the Brummer was also a light cruiser of some 4,500 tons and lies at about the same depth of the Köln.
Thanks to Hazel and Helen of our livaboard vessel MV-Valkyrie for being great hosts to my return visit after 14 years - made possible at the last moment through a joint effort of Silent Planet, Underwater Explorers and Millennium Divers.
Camera and housing: On trial is the Fuji Finepix F80 EXR with its own 40m depth rated housing. Filmed on HD1280 video mode with auto white balance. Edited to 480p for upload.
More to come... Once I work out how to better edit and post for Youtube! :-)

UB-116 wreck dive, Scapa flow
During World War I, UB-116 was tasked with penetrating Scapa Flow and taking out as many ships as possible to even the odds for a last attack by the German High Seas Fleet. An earlier attempt to confront the British Grand Fleet and bring them to battle had been frustrated by the Kiel sailor mutiny.
The U-boat's captain Lieutenant JJ Emsmann had been advised to use Hoxa Sound as Royal Navy vessels had been seen, by other U-boats in the Pentland Firth, using this entrance to Scapa Flow.
The U-boat was spotted when Emsmann came to periscope depth at 11.30pm to check his position. The mines were detonated and UB-116 was destroyed. She was the last U-boat sunk in World War I.
She lies at 29m and is in the worst possible condition for a U Boat, although the plethora of life covering her, more than makes up for this. Swimming Ling and Conger plus all the usual subjects!

Diving the wreck of the James Barrie - Scapa Flow
A dive on the wreck of the James Barrie, a trawler which sank in 40m of water in Scapa flow, Orkney isles. Although this wreck is not as large and impressive as one of the German WWI fleet which also populate the flows depths , the Barrie is a great dive to do while you're up in the Orkney Isles.
