Scapa Flow Trip
Scuba North 2012 Scapa Flow Trip
Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum
The Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum explores the importance of Scapa Flow as a base for the British fleet throughout history, concentrating on its role during two world wars.
It's centred around the former fuel oil pumping station at Lyness Naval Base, (HMS Proserpine) - including one of the tanks that once held 12,000 tons of fuel oil for the fleet, which now houses large exhibits.
Highlights include a collection of large military vehicles, cranes and artillery, audio recordings of service personnel and locals speaking about wartime, and relics from wrecks including HMS Hampshire and HMS Royal Oak.
There are plenty of children's activities as well as a gift shop and cafe.
The Museum is a two minute walk from Lyness pier. There's a 2 hour guided walk around the remains of the former Lyness Naval Base leaves from the museum at 11:00 each Tuesday (from early April onwards).
The museum is open March – October (Sunday opening during the period May-September) and admission is free. The popular Pumphouse Cafe is usually open from Easter – October.

HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH IN SCAPA FLOW
The Scapa Flow diving experience.
A short movie showing some of the dive sites in Scapa Flow. The wrecks and gloomy lighting make for a both thrilling and beautiful diving experience.
After doing a drysuit and nitrox course in the beginning of the week I was trying out my new camera set up the rest of the week. Low light makes for a grainy movie and keeping the camera steady was a little bit more challenging in the dry suit.
But all in all I'm very satisfied with the footage and am curious to see how the next dive trip will pan out. So enjoy the film and don't be shy to post comments.

Negative Entry!
A negative entry is required when it is impossible or impractical to begin a dive from the surface. There are several reasons for such an entry, but on this occassion the dive site never has a slack tidal window. Negative Entries are obviously quite dangerous since there is no second chance! If the diver has not throughly checked all their equipment is functioning correctly and the Dive plan is in order, DEATH is a real possibility.
This is the members of SUDS Seniors about to dive the Tabarka in Scapa. The Tabarka is a block ship sunk to prevent German U-Boats from entering the anchorage of the British Grand Fleet. The Wreck is an excellant dive!

Scapa Flow: Diving the blockships
I shot this video in 2008 while diving the block ships at Scapa Flow. These wrecks where sunk by the British to block off entry points to Scapa Flow's deep water harbor. The idea was that this would protect the ships against enemy attack.
The wreck lies in about 20 msw and the visibility was excellent. These wrecks are only dive-able in slack water. Once the full power of the Atlantic ocean hits these wrecks the currants are terrific. The strongest currants I've ever dived in. And that's saying a lot!
Drifting through your decompression give's you a feeling of being Superman. Fly across the ocean floor at breakneck speeds. It's one of those' should have been there' kinda things!
