Backpacking Glacier National Park - North Circle Route. (Part 1) Montana, August 2019
This is the first video of 2 from a 6 Day, 5 Night backpacking trip in Glacier National Park, Montana.
This video would not be possible without the kind help of Nick Furukawa and his wife, who found my SD cards lying on the trail on day 5 of our trip. Without them, this video would not have been possible.
We did what some call the North Circle Route starting on the East side of the park at the Many Glacier area.
We drove north towards Montana on Sunday August 11th, car camping the first night. The next day we drove into the park and starting backpacking at the Iceberg/Ptarmigan Trailhead.
We hiked up to the Ptarmigan Tunnel cutting through the cliff side and then dropping down to Elizabeth Lake for night 1.
Day 2 we hiked from Elizabeth Lake to Glens Lake Head campground for night #2.
Day 3 we left Glens Lake and headed up very steep and beautiful Stoney Indian Pass, and down to Stoney Indian Lake campground for night #3.
Day 4 we descended from Stoney Indian Lake down into the Waterton Valley, then climbing up to Fifty Mountain to camp for night 4.
Day 5 we left Fifty Mountain and heading towards Granite Park campground. I lost my Micro SD cards on the trail at this point, and following the trip I put in a lost and found for the cards, they were luckily found on the trail and mailed back to me! Night 5 at Granite Park Chalet was very rainy.
Day 6 we left Granite Park campground and headed up Swiftcurrent Pass. We then descended back into the Many Glacier Valley and back to the car.
This trip was absolutely stunning, and it was a treat to be able to get the pictures and videos, nearly a month after the trip concluded. I had little hope that I would ever get a chance to re live the experience, and now you can as well.
I hope you enjoy this part 1 preview video of our trip to Glacier National Park. Enjoy!
Part 2 coming soon!
Hiking around Many Glacier Hotel & Swiftcurrent Lake - Montana 2012
In this video you will see the many sights around Many Glacier Hotel and Swiftcurrent Lake from my Hike around the area in early July 2012. My sister and her husband also went with me and we all loved the breathtaking scenery. Please watch this in HD and full screen if possible to take advantage of the beauty!
This was our third day at Many Glacier Hotel and the best day of our stay from a weather standpoint. It was bright and sunny throughout the day and temps in the high 50's to low 60's. We spent about 3 hours walking around the Hotel and Swiftcurrent Lake filming all the scenery and then had a nice lunch at the hotel.
It felt great to be out in the middle of nowhere hiking in the mountains not knowing what lies ahead. We were a little nervous about the Bears from people talking about them and then seeing the signs posted. You have to take it seriously because you just never know when and if you may run into a wild Bear. We did see one Grizzly Bear way up on one mountain but far from us to worry about. It was hard to even see him with binoculars and we did not venture in the area he was in.
We hiked around Swifcurrent Lake and that trails was 2.6 miles. There were other trails that led further into the mountains and we did take one trail that led us to Lake Josephine but we decided to stop and not go any further into the mountains. We could of went on to Grinnell Lake and even the Grinnell Glacier but that was quite far and not knowing how long it was going to take we decided against it. We are not experienced mountain hikers either so that did have some play into the decision.
The Moose we saw was across the lake at one point so I had to zoom all the way in with my camcorder to capture it so it is a little shaky but neat to see. The still images at the end of the video I shot with my 4.0 mega pixel camcorder still image recording, not bad I must say!
From what I did film around the Hotel and Lakes you can see that it is beautiful country with some majestic scenery! Enjoying the Great Outdoors to the Fullest :-)
Many Glacier Hotel:

CDT Thru Hike 2018 Ep 31 - East Glacier to Canada - CDT Finish: Blizzard at the Border
In the final episode of my Continental Divide Trail Thru Hike Documentary, Hopeful, Katie and I leave East Glacier to hike the last leg of the CDT together through Glacier National Park. The route I hiked ended up being 74 miles over 3 half days and one full day.
Hopeful and I met up with Katie in East Glacier. With the team back together, we toiled over our options considering the fact that a winter storm is here and everything in the area is about to shut down for the season. With few good options, and a lack of understanding of what the conditions are in the high country, we set out on the Highline Trail. We made it to Old Man Lake night one, a few miles below the first pass. With temps in the teens and several inches of fresh snow on the ground, we had a miserable morning packing up wet tents and gear with frozen hands and feet. Recognizing the fact that we weren't even in the high country yet where the worst of the conditions are, plus another 18 inches of snow on the way, Katie and I decided to turn around and go back to East Glacier to form another plan. Hopeful decided to press on alone, determined to reach Waterton.
In East Glacier, Katie and I learned that every other CDT thru hiker we know of in Glacier bailed out of the mountains. So that made me feel better about such a heartbreaking decision, that at least it was the right call. Since the road to Chief Mountain, the alternate CDT end point, is now closed for the winter, I won't be able to hitch back. Now, the only real option is to road walk the rest of the way to Port of Piegan, the only customs/border crossing open for many miles. Katie later changed her mind about the road walk aspect and wanted to try and end at Waterton still. She was able to contact a CDT hiker named Magoo and meet up with him at St. Marys to hike the rest of the way to Waterton from there. So somehow we went from ending as a group to going our own ways again.
My second to last day on the CDT was my 2nd longest at 37 miles. It was one of the toughest days for me emotionally along the whole CDT. I saw my 6th black bear of the hike this evening as I walked into the darkness of night, through a thick and eerie fog, and reached the town of Babb. There's no public land, so I was forced to grab a hotel. When i woke up in the morning of my final day, there was a foot of snow on the ground. I walked the final 10 miles in a complete whiteout to the border to end my 165 day Continental Divide Trail thru hike. Mission complete!!

Going To The Sun Road - Hiking with Mountain Goats - Glacier National Park, Logan Pass - Montana
After setting into our St.Mary's/East Glacier KOA campground, we head into Glacier National Park for a day of exploring. We take the shuttle up the Going to the Sun road. It was an easy, quick way to avoid the hassle of parking. Once at the highest point, Logan Pass, we hop out and take a hike to Hidden Lake. This beautiful lake is nestled in the mountains and we were in awe of the wildflowers, mountain streams, and wildlife we saw. We lost count of the number of mountain goats we passed!

Nature Documentary - Glacier National Park (1080p)
Watch this exclusive documentary on Glacier National Park in Full HD (1080p).
Glacier National Park is a national park located in the U.S. state of Montana, on the Canada–United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park encompasses over 1 million acres (4,000 sq km) and includes parts of two mountain ranges (sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains), over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals. This vast pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles (41,000 sq km).
The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Upon the arrival of European explorers, it was dominated by the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the western regions. Soon after the establishment of the park on May 11, 1910, a number of hotels and chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railway. These historic hotels and chalets are listed as National Historic Landmarks and a total of 350 locations are on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1932 work was completed on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, later designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, which provided greater accessibility for automobiles into the heart of the park.
The mountains of Glacier National Park began forming 170 million years ago when ancient rocks were forced eastward up and over much younger rock strata. Known as the Lewis Overthrust, these sedimentary rocks are considered to have some of the finest fossilized examples of extremely early life found anywhere on Earth. The current shapes of the Lewis and Livingston mountain ranges and positioning and size of the lakes show the telltale evidence of massive glacial action, which carved U-shaped valleys and left behind moraines which impounded water, creating lakes. Of the estimated 150 glaciers which existed in the park in the mid-19th century, only 25 active glaciers remained by 2010. Scientists studying the glaciers in the park have estimated that all the glaciers may disappear by 2020 if the current climate patterns persist.
Glacier National Park has almost all its original native plant and animal species. Large mammals such as the grizzly, moose, and mountain goat, as well as rare or endangered species like the wolverine and Canadian lynx, inhabit the park. Hundreds of species of birds, more than a dozen fish species, and a few reptile and amphibian species have been documented. The park has numerous ecosystems ranging from prairie to tundra. Notably, the easternmost forests of western redcedar and hemlock grow in the southwest portion of the park. Large forest fires are uncommon in the park. However, in 2003 over 13% of the park burned.
Glacier National Park borders Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada—the two parks are known as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and were designated as the world's first International Peace Park in 1932. Both parks were designated by the United Nations as Biosphere Reserves in 1976, and in 1995 as World Heritage sites. [Wikipedia]

Amazing Going-to-the-Sun Road (Short Version) – Glacier National Park, Montana MT.
Ride with us (from a driver’s point of view) as we travel up the west side of Glacier National Park towards Logan Pass and the continental divide. Going-to-the-Sun road is an engineering masterpiece and is considered to be one of the most scenic highways in the world.
Glacier National Park was originally designed to be seen by horseback. A road into the center of the park was requested once automobiles became popular with tourists. Men labored 20 years building this marvelous roadway designed to blend with Glacier’s magnificent landscape.
Going-to-the-Sun road was dedicated in 1933. Stunning vistas await you as you travel the 50 mile scenic highway. It was the first national park road designed to complement scenic wonders. Logan Pass sits on the continental divide at 6,646 feet above sea level.
This is the first road to be designated a National Historic Landmark and is a National Civil Engineering Landmark. The road is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
This sequence was captured with a GoPro Hero 3 camera and edited with Adobe Premier Pro.

Hidden Lake Overlook Trail
Highlights of a rainy morning hike to the overlook of Hidden Lake at Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, Montana (1.35 miles, elevation gain of 1,400 feet) in August, 2017. Along the trail we pass the blooming wildflower meadow of Hanging Gardens, the Garden Wall, cross the Continental Divide and at the overlook the view faces Bearhat Mountain. Watch for one of the many ground squirrels.
This is a busy trail and the parking at Logan Pass can be tricky. An early start is best.

Glacier National Park RV Campground: Columbia Falls RV Park
Glacier National Park RV Campground: Columbia Falls RV Park:
Columbia Falls RV Park is a full service RV Resort and Campground located just minutes from the west entrance to Glacier National Park.
As the name suggests, the Columbia Falls RV Park is located right at the edge of the town of Columbia Falls in northwest Montana. Columbia Falls is a beautiful little laid-back mountain town which is big on recreation and hospitality.
It also happens to be The Gateway to Glacier National Park which means you will only be a few minutes away from all of the beauty and recreational opportunities that Glacier National Park has become known for.
The town of Columbia Falls is nestled up against the northern tip of the Swan Mountain Range, and the mighty Flathead River flows through the east end of town, just down the road from the RV park, and provides ample opportunities for fun and recreation like fishing, floating, swimming and boating.
Choosing the Columbia Falls RV Park and Cabins as the basecamp for your vacation to Glacier National Park provides you with many great advantages that you might not be able to find if you chose to stay at any of the other campgrounds or RV parks in the area.
Staying at Columbia Falls RV Park puts you right in the center of all that Columbia Falls has to offer, plus you are just a quick 20 minutes drive from the town of West Glacier and the most popular entrance to Glacier National Park.
Many of the guides and outfitters that service the park and surrounding area are located along the road between Columbia Falls and West Glacier, so if you are planing to do any whitewater rafting, or fishing, or horseback riding, or any helicopter or aerial tours of the park, staying in Columbia Falls will put you in the ideal spot to access all of Glacier National Parks greatest features and attractions.
It is pretty easy to see why the Columbia Falls RV Park is the clear winner and first choice when it comes to selecting your basecamp for your Glacier National Park vacation this year.

Mt Rainier - Paradise Glacier/Cowlitz Rocks Hike
The Paradise Glacier / Cowlitz Rocks area on the east side of Mt Rainier is a fantastic destination, and an ideal place to observe the formation of lenticular clouds, as the highest peak in the Cascade Range disrupts the air flow well into the upper atmosphere. The landscape above the treeline is other-worldly, and only mostly snow free during the end of September.
