Kiel City Tour, Schleswig Hostein, Germany 4kUHD
Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, with a population of 240,832 (June 2014).
Kiel lies approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Hamburg. Due to its geographic location in the north of Germany, the southeast of the Jutland peninsula, and the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea, Kiel has become one of the major maritime centres of Germany. For instance, the city is known for a variety of international sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week, which is the biggest sailing event in the world. The Olympic sailing competitions of the 1936 and the 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Kiel.
Kiel has also been one of the traditional homes of the German Navy's Baltic fleet, and continues to be a major high-tech shipbuilding centre. Located in Kiel is the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) (de) at the University of Kiel. Kiel is an important sea transport hub, thanks to its location on the Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde) and the busiest artificial waterway in the world, Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). A number of passenger ferries to Sweden, Norway, Russia, and other countries operate from here. Moreover, today Kiel harbour is an important port of call for cruise ships touring the Baltic Sea.
Kiel was one of the founding cities of original European Green Capital Award in 2006. In 2005 Kiel's GDP per capita was €35,618, which is well above Germany's national average, and 159% of the European Union's average.
Within Germany and parts of Europe, the city is known for its leading handball team, THW Kiel. The city is home to the University of Kiel (established in 1665).
The name of the city is most likely derived from the wedge form of its bay (Keil in German)

Labenz in Schleswig-Holstein

Best places to visit in Germany
Leipzig
It’s the largest city in Germany’s federal state of Saxony. This place is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene shaped by famous music composers like Bach, Richard Wagner and Felix Mendelssohn. Tourists today can enjoy performances of Bach’s music at the St. Thomas Church where Bach once served as choir leader and is now buried.
Rugen Island
Located in the Baltic Sea, Rugen Island is the largest island in Germany, connected to the mainland by the Rugen Bridge and Rugen Causeway. Charming villas, romantic seaside resorts and beautiful beaches all draw tourists to Rugen Island.
Romantic Rhine
Stretching between the cities of Bingen and Bonn, Germany, the Middle Rhine flows through a dramatic geological formation called the Rhine Gorge. This region features a spectacular landscape dotted with some 40 medieval castles, picturesque villages and terraced vineyards. The region’s most famous natural attraction is the Lorelei, the deepest and most narrow section of the Rhine Gorge, which features a large, treacherous rock that caused several boating accidents prior to the 19th century. The best way to enjoy the feeling is to travel by a river boat there.
Cologne
Situated on the Rhine River in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Cologne is one of the most popular places to visit in Germany. The city offers a vibrant array of attractions, buzzing nightlife and a stellar arts and culture scene.
Dresden
Before it was severely damaged from World War II bombings, Dresden was known as the Jewel Box because of its lavish collection of stunning art and architecture.
Lubeck
As one of the largest Baltic seaports in Germany, Lübeck is located in the country’s northern-most state, Schleswig-Holstein. Founded in 1143, Lübeck served for several centuries as the capital seat of the Hanseatic League.
Heidelberg
With historic treasures like the medieval Old Bridge, the Heidelberg Castle, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Knight St. George House, no wonder that Heidelberg is a popular tourist attraction. The city center’s main street, Haupstrasse, is packed with pubs, restaurants, museums, art galleries, shops and markets selling the likes of beer steins, cuckoo clocks and German sausages.
Neuschwanstein
The most photographed building in Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle, is also one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.
Munich
Best known as the origin of the world famous Oktoberfest, Munich is one of the best places to visit in Germany with a great culture scene. Munich is home to several sophisticated opera houses and theaters like the National Theatre.
Berlin
A federal state and the capital city of Germany, Berlin is widely associated with its World War II history and former division of East and West Germany by the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. Since the fall of the historic wall in 1989, Berlin today is now a vast, unified city diverse in ethnic groups and abundant in sightseeing attractions, culture and nightlife.
Brandenburg Gate
Built in 1791, the sandstone monument is modeled after the Acropolis in Athens.
The Berlin Wall
Among the most popular Germany tourist attractions, some of Berlin Wall’s sections have been well preserved and some are even covered in colorful graffiti. Also, visit the Berlin Wall Exhibition and Berlin War Memorial.
The Black Forest
This densely wooded hill is among the top-rated Germany destinations and a great place to enjoy panoramic views, luxury spa, skiing, trekking and more etc. one of the best places for a nature admirer.
The Bürgerstadt and Bamberg
Among all places in Germany, I recommend the valley of Regnitz, where on one side is the charming old town of Bürgerstadt and on the other is the old imperial city of Bamberg.
Zugspitze Massif
The best way to enjoy Germany’s natural beauty is by visiting the Zugspitze Massif. At 2,950 meters above sea level, this eastern summit is a spectacular location to enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views of the German landscape. Best timing to do the hike is like from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.
Kings Lake aka Königssee
The lake can either be explored through its beautiful walkways via a boat ride aboard a 17th-century vessel. The lake is also home to famous mountain resorts where you can stay during your trip. This lake is simply a treat for your eyes.
Sanssouci Palace and Park
The entire construction of the park and palace took place between the years of 1744 and 1756. The park is spread across a large area and showcases a rich designation of not just a flower but a fruit garden as well. The park has over 3000 fruit trees which makes it unique.

J. S. Bach, Sinfonia from Cantata No.156, Castle Gottorf Schleswig, Germany
Gottorf Castle:
It was first settled as an estate in 1161 as the residence of Bishop Occo of Schleswig when his former residence was destroyed. The Danish Duke of Schleswig acquired it through a purchase in 1268, and in 1340 it was transferred to the Count of Holstein at Rendsburg of the House of Schauenburg. The manor later, through maternal inheritance, became the possession of Christian I of Denmark, the first Danish monarch from the House of Oldenburg, in 1459.
Both the island and the structure were extended through the years, and particularly during the 16th century. Frederick I, younger son of Christian I, made it his primary residence. In 1544 the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were divided in three parts; Frederick's third son Adolf received one of these parts and made his residence at Gottorp. This state became known as the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp.
The estate became a European cultural centre in the reign of Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, (1597–1659). The castle was built by the famous Swedish architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger (1697-1703).
After the ducal lineage of Gottorp were forced to move out in 1702, the palace, now occupied by the Danish, fell into disuse and disrepair in 1713 under the reign of Frederick IV of Denmark. Pieces of furniture, art and other interior were gradually moved out of the palace, and the structures were used both as Danish and Prussian barracks in the 19th century.
During World War II, the estate was used as a displaced persons camp.
Since 1947, the palace has been renovated and restored through a series of efforts. The restoration was considered complete in 1996. The palace is now owned by a foundation of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and houses the State Art and Cultural History Museum and the State Archeological Museum. Source: Wikipedia
German state governor visits Jerusalem
(7 Apr 2016) The Governor of Germany's Schleswig-Holstein state, Torsten Albig, on Thursday visited the Yad Vashem museum in Jerusalem.
Albig laid a wreath and lit a flame in memory of Jews murdered during the Holocaust.
Speaking at the Yad Vashem, Albig said that it is vital to remember Germany's dark past, noting that anti-Semitism and religious hatred seems to be on the rise again.
Albig is also expected to meet Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem.
Seven decades after the Holocaust, strong bond exists between Israel and Germany.
