Places to see in ( Karlsruhe - Germany ) Schloss Gottesaue
Gottesaue Palace is a multi destroyed and reconstructed Renaissance - castle in Karlsruhe Oststadt on the site of a former Benedictine abbey. It is today the seat of the University of Music Karlsruhe. In 1094 the Benedictine abbey Gottesaue was founded by Count Berthold von Hohenberg . The monastery was looted in 1525 and damaged by fire. Margrave Ernst Friedrich of Baden-Durlach had built a castle from 1588 to 1597 on the site according to the plans of Johannes Schoch . In 1689, the palace was destroyed by fire in the Palatinate War of Succession and repaired provisionally. After another fire in 1735, it was rebuilt in 1743 lower and used by the chamber estate as a fruit store. In 1818 the building became a barracks and in 1919 tenements, After serving briefly as a police academy in 1935, it once again became a barracks in 1936.
In an air raid in 1944, the building was destroyed and a part of the ruin blown up because of danger of collapse. Rebuilding began in 1982, in its external appearance largely in the style of the 16th century, with visible inclusion of surviving remnants of the walls. In 1989, the University of Music Karlsruhe moved in . In the aftermath of the cavalry house Fuchsbau , Marstall and other outbuildings were prepared for use by the university.
Count Berchtholdus de Hohenburg donated in 1094 the monastery in Gotzaugen , by Bishop Gebhard III. was consecrated by Constance in 1103. This is reported by an extract made in the 17th century from the non-preserved monastic annals. Gotzaugen was a clearing at the edge area of the county in Ufgau . Berthold, who named himself after the castle built by him or his predecessor on the Hohenberg - today Turmberg near Durlach - was owner of the county in Pfinzgau .
Under margrave Ernst Friedrich began after 1584 a brisk building activity. A livestock house and stables were built and a store in part of the old monastery church. After the plans of the Strasbourg builder Johannes Schoch began in 1588 with the construction of the Gottesauer castle. Apart from the interior work, the construction work was completed in 1597. On the second floor was the castle chapel and a small hall and on the third floor the large ballroom. The new building with its five towers, which was built in two construction stages, does not stand on the foundations of the converted and partly demolished old church.
While the website of the city of Karlsruhe usually reads Schloss Gottesaue and also means an adjoining street, the city archives of Karlsruhe endorse the name Schloss Gottesau because it is part of a work by Emil Lecroix (The Art Monuments of the Karlsruhe-Land. Karlsruhe 1937 ) is called so.

Karlsruhe is the second-largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany, near the French-German border. The city of Karlsruhe is the seat of the two highest courts in Germany: the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice. Karlsruhe most remarkable building is Karlsruhe Palace, which was built in 1715. Karlsruhe city centre is the oldest part of town and lies south of the palace in the quadrant defined by nine of the radial streets. The central part of the palace runs east-west, with two wings, each at a 45° angle, directed southeast and southwest (i.e., parallel with the streets marking the boundaries of the quadrant defining the city center).
The market square lies on the street running south from the palace to Ettlingen. The market square has the town hall (Rathaus) to the west, the main Lutheran church (Evangelische Stadtkirche) to the east, and the tomb of Margrave Charles III William in a pyramid in the buildings, resulting in Karlsruhe being one of only three large cities in Germany where buildings are laid out in the neoclassical style. The area north of the palace is a park and forest. Originally the area to the east of the palace consisted of gardens and forests, some of which remain, but the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (founded in 1825), Wildparkstadion football stadium, and residential areas have been built there. The area west of the palace is now mostly residential.
The Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK) operates the city's urban public transport network, comprising seven tram routes and a network of bus routes. This network is well developed and all city areas can be reached round the clock by tram and a night bus system. The Turmbergbahn funicular railway, to the east of the city centre, is also operated by the VBK. The VBK is also a partner, with the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft and Deutsche Bahn, in the operation of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn, the rail system that serves a larger area around the city. This system makes it possible to reach other towns in the region, like Ettlingen, Wörth am Rhein, Pforzheim, Bad Wildbad, Bretten, Bruchsal, Heilbronn, Baden-Baden, and even Freudenstadt in the Black Forest right from the city centre. The Stadtbahn is well known in transport circles around the world for pioneering the concept of operating trams on train tracks, to achieve a more effective and attractive public transport system, to the extent that this is often known as the Karlsruhe model tram-train system.

Few buildings have a more trouble-ridden history than the Gottesaue Palace in Karlsruhe, Germany
The earliest history of the palace is a Benedictine Abbey that was built here in 1094 and destroyed in 1525.
The forerunner of today's palace was built in the 16th century, but was destroyed in 1689.
It was restored, but then was damaged in a fire less than fifty years later and had to be restored again.
Finally, the Gottesaue Palace was leveled during World War Two and was not restored until 1978.
Now, once more at peace, the palace enjoys a serene existence as a German music academy.
